As mostly a career integrator, the whole thing. I wish I had this customer context earlier, but positively I share this with people in integration earlier in their career. #1(10:25): ... most IIOT people have no idea what they are talking about! Executives who are listening to them are getting dumber. (I can relate having gotten dumber at many conferences, haha). #1B (7:35): Executives who spent, that should be ashamed of themselves, who spent 7 figures on the ERP to get efficiencies, wasting their money #2 (6:25): "the information those solutions could provide you ended THERE, THERE!" Karate chops the board at ERP -> MES.

It's the first time I have heard someone finally put ERP in it's place in this context. An oil/gas customer of mine a while back installed SAP, and you should have heard them go on about how it was going to save the day. It was a total disaster. So many problems to get it to fit their operations. And absolutely no other system was allowed to connect to it. The IT department simply refused. It was like SAP was in an ivory tower. From my limited experience, this is truth Walker!

8:40 I agree! I'm a software engineer, I worked for IT and Engineering departments, and always have this issues... My last job, they want to automate a IVR process that according to the head of IT was only possible using 3rd party services bla bla bla... and would not work in real time... I did it inside the ERP database (SQL) and made it work in real time, I was able to create a POST request calling a REST API that was on the customer side ... all this in SQL ... and guess what... we didn't have a test environment ... did it straight in Production! lol

Great video Walker and Zack! Thanks for posting the whole thing. People starting out with an OEE in the 30's is pretty common. We've seen low 20's. Almost exclusively, they think it's better, especially when they are doing "calculations by hand". There is almost always that shock of the lines and facility being that low and needing to work past that shock and to allowing them to become more efficient. The data visualization is a big thing. If you've seen Our Hour by Hour Productivity video. Very similar, showing operators what is happening based on real time data of the lines. Big performance boost. Also with scheduling, understanding what change overs need to happen between runs and scheduling that more efficiently. We run into this a lot in food and bev with allergens. Wait for the forthcoming Corso series talking about all the "little things" we do to find make processes better, like changing PLC code, like updating HMI screens, most of those are looking at how machines were originally built, and talking to operators and maintenance staff to understand how we can help make their jobs easier. If they know it or not, they are a huge wealth of knowledge and we need to capture that.

I'm sorry, but visualizing OEE has nothing to do with buzzwords like Industry 4.0. It's just a simple calculation and it can be done on the simplest platforms available or control systems that cost seven figures. Even doing the calculation once a day on a calculator can be valuable. Yeah, it's an important gauge of the business and should drive efforts to improvement. Don't convolute it with this IIOT nonsense! I've seen companies that have no idea what their OEE is because they don't bother to collect any machine efficiency data even though they have all the resources they need to do it.

OMG! What a lesson! I don't work in any industries -- I'm just an English as second language teacher trying to find interesting videos for a student who is an engineer working in the food industry. I don't understand any of this, but I feel like this is gold and that we'll be able to have very interesting discussions in the upcoming classes with this video. I'm excited to understand the overall ideas behind all these systems (and I'll make him explain them to me lol). Thank you for the video and for the honesty in it. Just one question, though: I've just realized the video is from 2 years ago. Is all of this still true nowadays? (from the comments I can see it probably is)

I have no background by education. By career, I worked for a railroad wayside monitoring system which used PLC and SCADA systems and Oracle for database with several optical scan cams and sensors. What is MES? What is HMI? Can I request you to elaborate each acronym at least once at the beginning or on the first use? It helps people like me to understand and learn IIOT without self-doubt. I want to thank you for your authoritative talks. I can hear and see how much experience you have in this field. You are a master!

After watching Walker talk about OPC UA for the past month, I have learned more than any paid course I have ever taken, the sad part is that one course I took said that OPC UA was open source & can talk to ERP for the edge. Excellent stuff, Walker. Although I wonder whenever you refer to "Business", there is a great focus on "producing and shipping things" and not at all on designing (R&D) and maintaining (after market) things. For example - one of the large IT budget suckers outside of ERP is PLM system (and that space is also undergoing tremendous changes in the context of Industry 4.0 ). Any reasons for omitting that space? Just saying from the completeness point of view.

Of Course...the ERP rant. My Story: 1992...My employer's ERP/Accounting/Inventory was Mapics II (which was old even back then). A very good system if you ask me, even by today's standards. They just did not have the automated data input, or much analysis, because IT had trouble with it communicating with other software, and department turf wars. Plus, the interface required terminal skills (which few managers had back then). Spending on Oracle, Epicor, etc. were going to be "the fix" to the "problem". The core problem was transparency, and communication. On that note...is SAP really that much better? Interested in your thoughts.

Really like your videos but here not so sure. 1st connecting ERP to MES/scada/plc is super easy thus all realtime info flows down from the erp to the floor and back up from the floor. Also who wants to run different software for wms, shipping, billing... If you are running 10,20 50 mills you want a unified solution maintained centrally or even in the cloud today. Now MES and scada run locally but some wnet as far as running these centrally too

Noone wants different software for all of these functionalities -- but that is the common thread when we get on site. Data silos grow out of the changing needs of an organization... when there is no minimum technical requirements for your IIoT infrastructure, you can add anything -- and organizations do.

Oh my god, you actually think changing the PLC code is going to make a major change in machine efficiency? How much experience did you say you have??? No, the ACTUAL reason highly efficient companies are so efficient is by using decades old technology, like statistical methods, to constantly remove small inefficiencies from their manufacturing process on a daily basis. If you remove a 0.1% inefficiency 100 times in a year, you've gone from 80% to 90%. And companies like Toyota have been doing this for DECADES without Ethernet, IIOT, or any other fancy technologies. They just pay close attention to the real drivers of inefficiency, things most people ignore because they don't think it matters. This isn't new information; it's been out there for half a century now!
