Really can't believe this, that such a prestigious institute came up with this jerk decision to stop suicides.

I think this decision is the part of main decision to stop suicide attempts. But media is only focusing on this fan topic for TRP! For example out of 20 decisions to stop suicide from happening Removing fan might be 20th priority! In fact society, films, news articles portrayed Ceiling Fan as one of the tools to commit suicide. So obviously it became most common way to commit suicide! So removing fan will prevent immediate attempts.! A small time gap will make big difference! At least it may save one in 10 attempts.

Why to worry, when you know usually only men committ suicide, if they really want to curb suicides, then government should make some advertisements so society don't put unnecessary pressure on us. I always heard from my parents and society and even in movies, that I'm men ao should bear pain, rather then responsibilities what we get from family, we get raise to take care of them in their old age, never get love and always when we are adult, always have stress of fulfilling everyone's needs because everyone looks at you for help, because you are raised to be servant so how can you deny, if you say you are not capable of doing something then will say, basically you are running from responsibilities, I hell don't understand what are my responsibilities and why only I have responsibilities, since childhood to school life, to college to job, even in life we have compromise and people, men have good humour but no one looks at the problems that we face throughout life, I can bet of a boy don't earn, neither parents nor wife, nor kids, no one gonna take care of him, after all, if bank account has no balance then what's the need ATM card, it's better to throw it, same if men is not earning, he is useless by the society hence better he should die, I don't why it becomes a problems to society when they look at our mental pressure since we are 2 years old and on schools, jow teachers are totally biased against boys.

Even the first three-four suggestions are meaningless. Students in higher academia have to go through a number of hurdles and financial setback is just 'the final nail in the coffin'. Being a research scholar myself I can confirm that most of the counseling and google form surveys for mental health have absolutely no impact on the mental condition. We aren't talking about a teenager who has attempted self-harm due to silly break-ups or some parental pressure but a fairly learned individual in his/her early to mid 30's going through turmoils. Highly ambitious goals targeted with insufficient resources are a major cause of anxiety. This is often topped up with derogatory remarks and feedbacks. We should respect the fact that suicide may seem like a one-time triggered event but it is a consequence of the history of sustained anxiety and depression.

Here is the thing about mental health, therapy is very rarely successful firstly and most people treat psychology like the solution and avoid diving deep into what they feel, why they feel, and what causes it. It can takes years or decades or even your entire life to cure depression and to cure your mental illnesses, meds help you for a while but not a permanent solution, therapy might help but also not effective for most. So don't think everything the west prescribes is the way forward. India is a developing country where most cannot afford therapy. We need to dig deeper and see how the system is contributing in make their lives difficult and how that needs to be changed, how our syllabus needs to be changed and the way of teaching needs change, how govt. Schools needs funding and teachers need to be paid, those are the main issues.

If IISC can provide some alternatives of ceiling fans(for cooling ;-) ) during summer then this is not a bad decision all together apart from counselling and all.

I'm surprised a premier institute like iisc doesn't give you the option for AC rooms that run on solar/renewable source of energy.

Yeah yeah and mental health? Its just like eating pills without doctors consultation and saying " why my fever is not curing"
@srijansingh24302 жыл бұрын
@@chikoo7584 I am not saying that we should ignore mental health, they must try to make their environment stress free and all but such things can not be possible in a go. One can not solely dependent on that. They must take some quick implementable decision too and removing ceilings fan is one such decision. I don't find anything bad in thi decision..

Not true entirely.. The first three suggestions mentioned are already happening in IISc.. Their effectiveness might be questioned..
@zb55352 жыл бұрын
Ms Garima IISc has been practising all that you have mentioned. 1. They provide free counselling 2. There is a student body (shades of blue) who are actively reaching out to many students 3. There are internal feedback forms to address the situation The issue is more complicated. Try understanding what goes before self harm. Your satire has reminded me of my lost colleagues at IISc, although your satire did not refer to them.

I dont understand why people take such steps even after reaching top institutions. Have they ever thought how the rest 99% live our life? Constantly feeling judged because we havent studiend in "top tier" colleges.
@zb55352 жыл бұрын
@@sourabhs14 yes. Not just you, but many “don’t understand” why this happens. From what I have witnessed, it’s not about the academics or pressure. Let’s not judge what we don’t understand.

What do you think are reasons for suicide in one of the premier institutions of the country? I know it's complicated to understand, still I would like to know. At least people will talk about those issues..
@silentkiller40912 жыл бұрын
I guess the definition of success has changed in the society from getting placed at the top company to starting a billion dollar startup. Being in IISc can get the best job but it's not enough for entrepreneurship. And the startup mentors there are terrible TBH(even though they are damn good in their domains). I have been there and let's just say I was disappointed.

Suicides and mental health of Indian students domestically and overseas is so bad that one only needs to talk to them. Low self-esteem, lack of confidence, anxiety, depression and a plethora of mental disorders start at home. This is due to the unrealistic expectation of society and complete disregard of mental health in our education system. To top this all sociopaths and sycophants are abundant amongst us as friends and family. If something is not done to address this toxic culture of unrealistic expectations, greed along with the psychotic desires of peers and family members the country is bound to be doomed. Great video, speaks volumes about the state of Indian society and its lopsided and imbalanced education system which produces working robots and not emotionally intelligent, wise and genuinely curious minds which uplift the society.

There is a lot of unnecessary judgment and snobbery in academia. It crushes students mentally. Once they leave academia, they realize just how much better the world outside is.

Nobody cares about students. All higher authorities are extremely selfish. They just care about getting their salary and destroying the morale of the students and treating students with disrespect. Administration doesn't even possess the basic common-sense of understanding the way an organization works.

Next will be the power points - electric - in their rooms: those feeling the weight of their mortal coils could erm, well, forgive me, connect themselves to the 220V/50~ supply... And even from the places with geysers. In fact, perhaps, remove ceilings themselves. And, weapons of mass destruction in chem labs. And, all sharp objects like razor blades and keen intellect. Gosh 😶
