IJV - What's the magic in measuring the Internal Jugular Vein?

Measuring the Internal Jugular Vein provides a wealth of information on the state of neurovascular health in the neck.
The Internal Jugular Vein runs within the Carotid sheath along with the Carotid artery and the Vagus nerve. Many other important structures run adjacent to the carotid sheath, from the cervical sympathetic trunk and the phrenic nerve.
The Internal Jugular Vein provides incredible and immediate insight into precisely where breakdowns in neck curvature are impinging nerves, arteries, and venous flow - which often overtime lead to significant symptoms, loss of health, and leave us vulnerable to worse problems
Yes, sometimes the internal jugular vein is being compressed due to significant internal pathologies that require further medical attention: tumors, plaques, etc.
However, we most often find it is being compressed due to breakdowns in the cervical curve and the postural relationships between the head, neck, upper back, and shoulders.

What a breath of fresh Air. Why is this doctor not in my country? The head pressure, the tachycardia, the shortness of breath, clunking and crunching of neck, all seem to point to neck instability in my case . I see it as the neck because I have had a battery of tests ranging from brain MRI to Holter monitor, Holter monitor recorded an HR of 110-115 baseline which is not normal for my age, (I repeat I have no cardiovascular complications) and the neck has shown a straight curve, Every single test has been remarkable, I have visited a doctor on numerous occasions- just sent with Valium they have no idea nor there is an active interest in understanding my struggle or getting to the bottom of it I used to work in the tech field and I recall 3 particular events that I believe led to what I have 1) minor hit on my vehicle from reversing car 2) Sliding down the wet stairs while I 3) My former career in tech with hours slouched on the desk. I believe the culmination of such events led to the instability and the subsequent symptoms leading up to the events. The Medical System in my country has a lack of awareness regarding neck disorders and there are no regenerative procedure nor do any therapies like curve correction, monitoring of blood flow with different neck measures as Brian mentioned are performed here, Many doctors here are also not familiar with CranioCervical Instability I need prayers this illness is such a horrible way to live and causes a lot of internal suffering. I feel like my life is wasting away because no one wants to see my neck, I even had someone tell me that loss of lordosis is no issue. Well if you look at it this way, the neck has baroreceptors, not to mention the veins/arteries which are the main suppliers of blood to the brain and heart, it makes perfect sense why a person can have symptoms like head pressure, tachycardia vertigo, dizziness and the like and this is especially when the person never had such symptoms before. I wish you all good health and I seem to be developing high levels of sorrow and grief because of not being validated I would also reccomend catching cervical instability very early on it does not matter even if its miniscule. It is the miniscule things that lead up to the big things. If I do not find much help here --I look forward to make the plunge to USA. We do not have a DMX either which can take motion of the neck in a video sequence and can also see structures like the atlas, jaw and ligaments in a more detailed manner and this is something I would like you to cover Brian as well as ways to correct these issues

IJV sounds like such a useful canary in the mine. Hopefully these examinations will become standard practice one day.

Also important part for neck system is trigger point in muscles , i think for Jugular Vein more important sternocleidomastoid , scalene trigger points . Work process completely described in Clair Davies Trigger Point Therapy . Dry needling also good technique for work with trigger.

Great video I saw one of your comments from a previous KZfaq video in my inbox and I wanted to just say thankyou for considering my suggestion. I just had an additionally query can an open mouth xray the ones at a radiologist be able detect (Not a DMX) atlas misalignment, I sometimes feel when turning my neck a cliking sound and kind of feel like my neck is loose when turning(I do not in my opinion feel like difficulty holding head but just when turning right left kind of loose) the Xray did report a loss of lordosis so I'm thinking it has something to do with c1 misalignment. Not sure if anyone else can relate too please let me know

Every time I see someone with c1 compressing the vein they have a loss of cervical curve. Do you also see that? Additionally my ijv is much better when I'm upright. I guess because of my c1 compression

Hi Brendan! Thanks for the note. Your IJVs are more open upright versus supine? Yes 95% of people we see with c1 IJV compression have a poor c-spine curve. On occasion there is styloid compression or other unique scenarios!
