IKEA hack: DIY enclosed Cat Litter Box

I love my cat but not the cat litter box. After 19 year, I have finally found the perfect cat litter and cat litter box set up that makes it a lot less of a chore and almost eliminates all that cat litter being tracked all over the floors. And best of all, I didn't have to buy a new enclosed cat litter since I was able to reuse and hack my IKEA bench for this project. I have a 19-year-old boi that I rescued at eight years old. He too has arthritis in his back and hip area. I give him slow gentle massages. I love that you “ work with what you have”. The thick wood illusion was ingenious.. Thank you for the great ideas😊 we learn from one another!

Hi, my cat turned 19 last July. She was born in my living room on my son's 7th birthday. She has similar markings and survived being attacked by a dog outside a few years ago that caused her to not be able to walk temporarily. Love this idea, I was looking for an enclosed litter box idea and this is great.

I would put a battery operator sensor light in there. I did something like this for my my cat that passed away last year, and the light made all the difference. 10 seconds after he left, the light would go off. When he went in he could see what he was doing.

@@Lara-jp4xk Not in complete darkness, like at night. They still need a light source. Blue-eyed and senior cats have even less visual acuity. I'm not surprised that this one wasn't crazy about going into a dark box, as creative as the idea was.

This isn’t entirely sealed, though. There is enough light coming in through the opening to allow the cat to see.

Long time pet sitter here and I think this is a great project that you came up with. I would never dare changing a kitty's litter with an older cat, but I'm glad it worked out for you. World's Best Cat Litter is another good choice that is a sawdust like consistency. I'm using it in my small space with two kitties and it works very well. Thanks!

Great project! I've seen where people put a piece of an indoor door mat in the floor of the enclosed litter box area so that the mat further takes off any tracked litter before they exit the box.

An ikea Toftbo rug works well. They are easy to shake out and wash. I use them for my litter box and it works well

Did something similar with a second-hand ikea 2-door cabinet. Made opening on one side and in the middle panel, put the litter box (a tote container, taller so more litter fits) on furthest side. Cats go in through side opening to an empty space and through the middle opening into the litter box. I just open the cabinet doors to scoop and clean up tracked litter from empty compartment. I even left in one shelf on each side, high up of course, to keep the litter scoop and bags.

That's really cute and clever. I thought you were going to lift it up and off the litter box to clean it. Thanks for the hints of sifting the wood chips, and the 'cat house'! My litter box is auto so I can't think of away to use it, but have been wanting to go natural with her litter. This looks doable when I'm in town! 😻

Energizer makes a small light that has an auto turn-on when you walked in front of it. It also has an shut-off after about ten minutes of no activity around it. It is about 3" x 3" and can stick magnetically to metal. It comes with a metal disk and 3M sticky tape too. That might be a good option for a little light in her litterbox cover. I love this idea and will be making one for my cat! Thanks for posting this! Great job! 😊👍

For people less handy, just using the drawer that you normally can buy with this works really well to, did this a few yrs ago did saw a cathead into the front and put the pillow that you can also buy for it on top of it for the cats to chill on. Putting a little catlitter mat in it also works really great to stop litter from getting everywhere!😊

Fyi...much cheaper to buy equine pine pellets. About $6 for a 40 lb bag. I'll never go back to clay clumping litter. This is SO lightweight and much cleaner! No dust either and far less smell

I literally have been looking for covered litter boxes and I like this much better than options I’ve seen. I have the world’s craziest cat because he doesn’t go for boxes so I’m concerned about the idea. Anyone have experience with nonbox cats & enclosed litter boxes?

Hi again, just wanted to tell you about these inexpensive cat litter mats I have seen at 'wally world' big box store in the cat isle. Some are made of a springy stringy material that traps litter pieces from the bottom of paws, and some are just simple 2 dimensional plastic mats. Perhaps you can add that to the space between the mat for added protection. Your cat is adorable.

Great set up! I have a senior cat that I foster and she is on Buprenorphine and weekly sub q medication. It has been an amazing change in how she behaves and moves. Once she has a dental with at least one tooth extracted, and when she recovers she will be available for adoption. Senior cats are amazing and quite a change from fostering kittens. Have you made a raised food dish so it is easier for her to eat?

Does anybody know where I can get something similar to the wooden bench in the video? When searching for it myself I find item that are way too small, too large, the wrong material like paperboard, or was just ridiculously expensive. I dont have a large budget at the moment but I can't stand the litter mess my cat leaves behind. If anyone could leave some links to any options, that would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

The lifespan for animals are much different than they are for humans. Some animals live a consistently shorter life span than humans (rats, dogs, cats, etc) while others live much much longer (sea turtles). Now, in comparison to OUR life span and depending on the average animal lifespan, we can pin point certain years of our and their lives that help us understand animals' age. Lia (the cat) has been alive for 19 years, which is *equivalent* for 92 human years. Frankly, Lia is past her prime. That does not mean that it wasn't God's intention for Lia to live as long as she does. God's intention is whatever he chooses, not what we want to classify as his intention. If God wanted, Lia could live for another 90 years, and that would be fine.. Humans used to live past 500 years, as it says numerously in the Bible. So, why would it not be his intention for animals to live the same? If you believe in the Bible, then you must also believe that nothing is impossible for our God, correct? Please, do not use the Bible and God's word to chastise or ridicule or be negative toward others. That was not God's intention for his word, and that is stated very clearly in the Bible. We should be kind and caring. Loving to all, whether they are right or wrong because that's how our Lord is. I hope you don't take offense to this, I have no intention of making you or anyone feel less than. But I can't stand by and see another post defacing what being a Christian Truely means. Even so, I hope you have a lovely day and know that I and our heavenly Father loves you eternally. ❤
