DIY Armchair Upholstery - Ikea Tullsta Hack
Why pay hundreds of dollars to professionally upholster a $100 chair from Ikea? Buy some upholstery fabric on sale and do it yourself! This upholstery project cost me only $35 and about 5 hours of my time. You can easily do this Ikea hack on a Sunday afternoon.

I picked up a Tullsta at a thrift store for 6.00 and took off the old cover to make a pattern. I purchased a baby pink upholstery fabric for 8.00 for 5.5 meters. When I'm done I'm giving it to my granddaughter who is 7 months old.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I spent hours online looking for a cheap solution to my old Tullsta but there is none - it makes little sense to spend $$$ on a chair that cost less than $100. I almost gave up! Your instructional video is a "life saver" for my chair and will be a nice addition to my newly remodeled fireplace, I love the fact that I can use a fabric of my choice, I plan to use a busy pattern and I'm sure I can do it :)

I'm so happy you liked the video, Arika! I totally hear you - an upholsterer wanted to charge me almost $400 to recover the chair, and that wasn't even including the cost of the fabric! I'm sure your chair will look fabulous when it's done! Are you on Twitter? If so, tweet me a picture! My twitter handle is @mellielangie

Nice hack for those with limited skills and/or equipment....and might I add budget. Good way to keep that chair going. I'm trying to buy new covers for my two and it looks like they aren't selling them anymore save for a gray or white color.

Thank you! I believe I bought 5.5 yards ... or metres. My memory is bad! LOL but I do remember I had quite a bit of fabric left over. I did this over the course of two days. If you have a free Saturday or Sunday at home, you can finish it in one day, about 8-10 hours.

Thank for uploading what you did. Really inspiring. I am halfway at completing my own upholstery job on the Tullsta chair we have. Although the job is not yet finished, its looking really good. In fact I think it looks even better than the job done by a local upholstery shop which did it for us last year. The fabric was sagging all over. Thumbs up to you.

This is a great video. Could original faux leather tub chairs be reupholstered with fabric using this technique? ie. heatnbond fabric over the faux leather etc?

Hmm ... I probably wouldn’t use the heat bound on it. Put I think stapling the fabric would be fine.

Hi there! I kept this chair for about 5 years after I posted this video (My condo was a little overstuff and I had to make space). The heat tape held up the entire time!

Great video! Does that tape stick to vinyl? We have some great club chairs that are shredding
@iseemelanie
@iseemelanie 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No, the adhesive won't work because it's heat activated - the iron would end up burning the vinyl.

the middle curve needs to be 2 panels not one with wrinkles in the back. the bottom black part needs to be taken off and when stapling finished, cover the bottom with the black material again. rather than tape, use adhesive spray. the cushion cover should be done by a sewing machine and fit like a glove with a zipper on the side so you can take it off and wash once in a while.
@iseemelanie
@iseemelanie 7 жыл бұрын
Clearly, the choice is up to you how you want to do it. I didn't want to use a sewing machine, and many people out there either don't have a machine or don't want to use one either.

It's ok but as you didn't stretch fabric it's a bit loose and after a while of using the chair it will be scruffy. It's been half a year since you made this video. How is it now?
@iseemelanie
@iseemelanie 9 жыл бұрын
Hey Igor. It's still in the same shape it was when I did I finished it in March. By no means is it a professional job, but it's still pretty good. This is actually my third time doing it (I had it in different colours to match the old paint I had in my den and living room).

I See Melanie Neither I'm a professional upholsterer but did 2 or 3 sofa/chair projects and from experience (and advice of a professionals) know it's a good habit to stretch the fabric. Please don't treat my comment as a critique but as thing to consider next time... All in all really nice video and well presented the whole process!

@iseemelanie 9 жыл бұрын
Oh no no, I'm not insulted by your comment at all. To be honest, I'm thinking of going with another colour sometime soon (I'm fickle like that!), so I'll take your input for the next upholstery session!

@@JohnyNotEnglish how does one stretch the fabric? Do you mean buy a gripping tool? Yet this fabric has no stretchiness to it... Hmmm ... I wondered if the middle of the back piece would be better cut tapered towards the bottom
@stopthelies3973
@stopthelies3973 7 жыл бұрын
Oh. that off center pleat in the back will make me crazy. Wow you had all that extra fabric why couldn't you have wrapped that cushion so it would have two sides? All you had to do was wrap it like a present and iron the tape in to close it up.

I think it would be much easier to keep the old material and use it as a pattern for the new material to cut. If not, it would be much easier to first use soft paper to make a pattern and then cut the material according to this. That would look much more professional. Just saying.
