TheUSS THRESHER SSN593 has special meaning to all of us that worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where she was launched. Forever on patrol.
Ahh yes, RIP uss thresher, I just watched on another channel about her and those brave men who sent out 37 pings, did they ever recover her or is she to far down? I can imagine the upset if the ship I worked on had gone down, my deepest sympathy x

I rode US boomers in the 1970s. This is a strange boat. The US boats of the 1960s did not have wood compartment bulkheads. The place with the table looks like an officer's Mess. There are things worst than being stuck on the bottom. It's going down and not finding the bottom.

This thing is huge compared to WWI or even WWII fleet subs....I can just see tourists on Maui, who've signed up for a trip on Atlantis submarines, motoring out to the platform, expecting a cute, non threatening commercial submarine, when this monster slowly rises from the depths... The wife turns to hubby : " Harold, did you read the fine print on the release forms you signed " ? I gather this is a diesel / electric sub. Still have the engines / motors aboard ?
