His voice is anemic coupled with unstable technique. Perhaps he'll be a groundbreaker for future Asian operatic leads the way Leontyne Price was for Verrett, Arroyo, Jessye Norman, etc.; unfortunately he doesn't possess a fraction of Price's majestic talent that was inspirational. I could only say “oh well” to his 2018 Met streaming Il Trovatore. His “Di quella pira” sounded like a drowning man. In every KZfaq video of his performances, he looks and sounds like he's struggling badly. I'm disappointed and don't understand why this individual has been chosen for some major leading Tenor roles. He's not ready for them (just like some of his Euro/American counterparts), and I've heard infinitely more impressive and capable Asian singers in supporting roles, featured in major productions.

This is a wonderful voice. But I worry about the way he spreads his tones. He won't last long doing that.

Just saw his Trovatore in HD. The rest of the cast was fine enough-Netrbebko may not erase memories of past immortals but she's a player-Hvorostovsky always elegant and stylish, and emotional performance because of his medical situation-but never a great top, and the real voice in the house is half the size-Zajick still has it after 25 yrs. but this tenor had no business singing this role-what is it with tenors today?, including Kaufmann, no squiillo, no brightness or gold on top-this guy can sing the role but in a thoroughly mediocre manner-and given the limitations of the voice, no real emotion. The greatest scene for Italian tenors back to back was a bore It amazes me that people think this is Ok-amybe they never heard a "real;" tenor

+Richard Berrong Did you see the performance? This guy could sing as a Mozart tenor, but has no business singing the roles he's singing.. It was not terrible, he knew the role-but utter mediocrity. Do you even know what Squillo is?-and without an are you deaf comment-he does not have it.

+Labienus Oh, by the way, he sings with little emotion, and can't act-OK

+Labienus Wow, it truly amazed me that people like yourself have the audacity to be so incredibly harsh and critical based on unfound notions of what a singer "should" or should not be singing.... What business do YOU have in saying what this world class tenor should or should not sing. My guess is that you have never heard Yonghoon live, in the theater. His voice is incredibly large and has so much ring and squillo in the top range-- it is an incredibly well balanced voice, very Italianate and elegant. Easily one of the greatest tenor voices in the world.

+victor paz I could not agree more!! After having seen this performance, I can say he was incredible. This guy has NO idea what he is saying. Total idiot. This tenor is the best in the world, BY FAR

+Labienus Are you stupid, insane, DEAF! MAYBE ALL THREE!!! What total rubbish. You know nothing about great singing. Voice is perfect for this repertoire. NO SQUALL????? HE VOICE WAS RINGING LIKE CRAZY IN THE HOUSE.

He goes out of place, flat and sour, on the low notes and shouts the high notes, a certain natural resonance of youth that sounds like a pushed up lyric -- I predict a short career aided by the metropolitan amplification that aids Netrebko and Hvorostovsky. I mean, come on, none of these people are Verdians in any sane world.They're jokes, pathetic jokes. And don't say it's hard to amplify in the opera stage, it's easy. Even if you don't wear body mics, which they do for the HD, you place mics strategically around the stage, it's called amplifying the stage.

+meyerbeer13 like you know what they do at the MET. If the the amateur performances on your channel are anything to go by then one should not pay much attention the to the bull wash you claim. They are teeming with flat and sour notes! Stick to performances in a bathroom, great accoustics there!

+meyerbeer13 Got to agree Meyerbeer... as for the amplification... I'd have to be in the house to get a better sense... unless you have insider info... Was surprised (maybe not) that the Times whitewashed to inadequacy of Lee...

+sarastro posa They admit they use body mics for HD, deny that they use it in the house. But it's pretty easy to do if you want to; amplifying the stage discreet body mics etc. In the singers' defense, the way the sets are built nowadays and the way the directors have them singing upstage, even Pavarotti wouldn't be heard without amplification. Sets can either focus the sound or suck it all away!!

+meyerbeer13 You can read my reaction to the Met HD with Lee above-utter mediocrity. I predicted a short career too, but you realize that he's 42 already! He is singing all these heavy role around the world-but it can't last. As far as the amplification issue. There used to be someone on KZfaq who was always claiming that. My response was Ok-but why do these voices sound so small in the house then? As someone said, if you have other evidence let's hear it. I didn't hear the Trovatore in the house-but there have been reactions on the Internet-(not the professional reviews which praised him) complaining that Lee's voice was not audible at times. Where was the amplification. It was clear to me even on the HD-that it was not a big voice-not big enough for Manrico!
@meyerbeer138 жыл бұрын
+Labienus I haven't been in NY for a while; I heard Netrebko there as Norina and if they were amplifying her it wasn't working! Who knows really? But the technology is there. Seattle Opera seems to be using amplification however, that's where I live now; I think it's unfair to the opera companies that don't, whose singers sound small!! But a lot of people now think of HD as the real opera and that's definitely body-mic'ed.

Very bad. He cries a lot in the high notes. There's no elegance. Listen to Carlo Bergonzi, please.
