I have NEVER SEEN more beautiful quads. The speed and verticality, along with the lean body construction, make for excellence every time.

He quads look so effortless. No wonder he can jump a 4A. It’ll be a piece of cake in competition. Shoutout to him for all the hard work he put into skating. He’s a beast (I can also see him jumping a quint in the near future. Looks like he has the ability to do so)

The WHOLE package. Great jumps, great spins, great footwork, nice smooth style - what's not to like? It annoys me when they mark him down a bit on transitions, skills, artistry etc. I think that's BS because he has a lovely, flowing, smooth style, his choreo is good and he's a great spinner too, not just a jumping machine. It worries me sometimes that judges often mark down the outstanding tech skaters for style, composition etc even when there's nothing wrong with that. I often get annoyed when judges mark up mediocre skaters on chroeo, style, transitions when all we see is someone waving their arms around and calling it artistry.

Who can look at this kid and say he has no artistry? His skating is so fluid and beautiful! Obviously not perfect, but still he already has so much style!

He has it all to be in the same league as Nathan and Hanyu!! Keep on fighting Ilia! The best is yet to come if you stay strong in spite of not skating clean at your first world's. Only a few skaters were only to skate clean, even the top 3 weren't able to skate clean.

I see tons of improvement in Ilia since Nationals. I have not been able to see the FS yet but regardless of the FS and overall result, Ilia must believe in himself and just continue to improve and get more experience. Ilia is still the the greatest jumper I have ever seen and his flow and speed in the practice were right up there with the best.

Such a super talented kid. The 4sal was good here with the normal arms crossed position. I think it was a mistake to attempt the jump with the hands overhead in the actual competitive LP if he hadn't been practicing it. I'm sure he has learned from it and will no doubt be on the World podium in the upcoming years.

Too bad he left it all in the Practise. Hope he does better at junior worlds. Although I’m sure he learned a lot from being there.

People need to calm down. He landed a 4 Axel and everybody is already throwing championship gold medals at him. He still needs to learn how to convey genuine emotion and command an audience. Sure, his skating is pleasant to look at, but pleasant skating is not performance. I feel like he's afraid of opening up before an audience because he might fear he would come off as weak or feminine. But on the other end of the scope, he's not exactly providing the stage presence of a Mick Jagger or a Jimmy Hendrix. He doesn't want to skate to classic music, fine. But if you're doing rock, then go all the way. Ilia is an amazing talent. But let's not get so blinded that we actually forget that the sort also has a performance aspect. I'm tired of people acting like the performance side of the sport is some afterthought. The fact that Ilia can get from one side of the rink to the next, smoothly, is setting the bar way too low. That's like giving someone a star because they showed up for work. Duh, of course he's going to be smooth, he's skating on ice. Hello! We need more. Wake up, people and become more discerning.

Very few skaters are fully fledged performers at Ilia's young age. But his technical ability is already incredible and in my opinion that justifies all the praise he is getting. Of course he will need to develop other aspects of his skating, as any junior who is just starting out at the senior level. And I am sure he will, over the next couple of seasons. I think we can all agree that there is a lot more to the sport than difficult jumps, you are right to point that out.

@@elisabethanderson7124 - I just don't want Ilia to fall in to the trap Trusova fell into. She was short-sighted, not very strategic, and tried to game the system through jumps and programs that were frankly, unfulfilling. And what happened, when the pressure was on, her quads at the Olympics weren't all that impressive. And after that, what was left? An empty program. So, basically, you kill yourself trying to do all this technique and then you're bitter when someone who does half as much ... wins! Clearly Trusova either doesn't understand the figure skating rule book or the basic tenants of figure skating. Or she was just stubborn and took a risk. Either way, it didn't work out for her. And Trursova is someone who, if she would at least try to be more artistic, would be at the top of the sport. NO QUESTION! She would be untouchable. (She already is, great, but man, what she could accomplish is unfathomable.") I don't think she's half as "unartistic" as some paint her to be. I think incompetent choreographers don't know how to work with her personality and her lines. So, yes, Ilia is remarkable. The problem is: he's not the only remarkable skater out there. There are already men performing quad-quad combinations. They may not be posting them on Instagram, but trust, Ilia will not go unchallenged. What I think people don't value is their own personality and their own artistry. That is the one thing no one can copy. It's just a matter of time (if not months) before we receive news of yet another young talent having landed a 4-axel. Thanks to KZfaq, people can simply look at Ilia's technique and copy it (it will take younger talent no time to memorize every frame of those videos). So, if everyone has similar jumps, what makes you stand out? You're artistry. The good news is I don't think Ilia is 100% hellbent against being more artistic. I think he is trying to emote, but doesn't quite know how. Choreographers need to allow him to be himself and then magnify THAT. That way, what he puts out will be genuine, moving, convincing, and frankly more interesting. When you become an introspective skater, and you have something you're burning to say and share with the audience, you make a connection. But you have to truly WANT to tell a story. If you want want to tell it badly enough, the audience will pick up on that and reward you handsomely.

Dude, what is this. He's massively pre-rotating his jumps. Ugh, figure skating really is dead in a ditch - everyone is cheating jumps now. So the technical, everyone is relying on, has no integrity either ._.

from what I´ve seen Illia has a textbook tech on all of his jumps. Consistency is a problem, though. And he has a loooong way to go in every other area. If you wanna critisize him, pick something else, because his tech looks solid.
