It really does help if you're one of use. But there are a lot of judo players on the circuit who do a version of this. If you work on it I'm sure you could do it as well.

It's good to see techniques broken down step by step. I like to visualise all techniques in a self defence situation. Some of the judo techniques I've come across, I find hard to accept as I feel they're impractical in such scenarios but others I think, they make perfect sense.

Aw Yeah!!! The great Iliadis. Rio '07. He had some big throws. A standing Kata Garuma.in which his Uke was fully horizontal above his head before he turned it over for the perfect Ippon. He barely lost that championship n Golden Score to the Georgian with that powerful over the shoulder belt grip that I never could figure out Cheers.

More accurate to call this Morote Seoi-Toshi with double lapel grip. Very cool though!

I appreciate that Illiadis himself refers to it as Seoi-Nage but if you look at other YT instructionals others refer to it as seoi-otoshi, even when referencing Illiadis technique.Craig Fallon (RIP) for instance;kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jpZxrJt7qJayeJ8.html. But you bring up an interesting point - some make the distinction between seoi-nage vs. seoi-otoshi based on foot placement and stance (feet inside vs. one inside, one outside as per tai-otoshi) but others such as yourself and indeed some Kodokan instructionals make the distinction based on whether uke is lifted (nage) or pulled down (otoshi). But many versions of tai-otoshi and it's morote equivalent (stance wise) use the calf against shin "leg pop" variation to pop uke up and then down over the outstretched leg. And in any case it can also be argued that the "otoshi" descriptor in these throws refers to Tori's dropping action, not ukes (even in other Kodokan vids).Bottom line - it's a grey area! - and of course Nage just means throw so isn't every throw "Nage"? :-)One thing for sure though - Illiadis' technique has both hands gripping so it can't be Ippon-Seoi. Double hand gripping lapels is Morote-Eri as you rightly point out and it's still largely a shoulder throw so Morote-Eri-Seoi. I prefer in my coaching to refer to the stepping dropping action as otoshi and teach this throw as a mixture of morote seoi upper body and tai-otoshi lower body (sort of - in actuality the outstretched leg steps deeper to block as opposed to conventional tai-otoshi). 3rd Dan USAJudo Certified Coach BTW.That's the fun in judo - once you get into these hybrid grip variation techniques we can all argue about what strictly to call the throw based on it's relationship to other more conventional techniques, but often grey areas exist.

@@iorekby that saying doesn't work very well with judo, almost if not all high level judokas are judo nerds. There are definitly some that have internalized judo only into their body and not at all in their minds, but they can't compete in high level tournaments, because they'll be out smarted. Nerding about details like this also often ends up improving ones understanding of the techniques, which often gives synergy and inspiration in other areas of ones judo skills.
