Had you thought about using chassis connectors instead of having the cables coiled up? I've built a few streaming flight cases and use Neutrik connectors on the outside, that way the internal cables can be hidden away and stops them getting damaged, as you're only plugging in and out of the side of the box.
@coffeedudeguy
@coffeedudeguy Жыл бұрын
Yeah I would use chassis mount sockets myself. Maybe Pat requested not to do it that way to cut down on setup time, and to avoid losing cables? I know someone might borrow a cable, and next thing I know I’m left with 3/4 xlr cables lol
@eflizotte
@eflizotte Жыл бұрын
This is the way. Or use a a DB25 fan out so you only need to plug in one connector to the side of the unit… To quickly identify cables in a rig like this, I’ve used small colored zips effectively…

I was wondering how you were going to pull up on that walnut, to release the catch, without snapping that thin walnut. The leather tab sharing a rivet with the catch itself was brilliant. What a simple, and 100% effective solution.

When Bob squeezed the foam with the squeaky sound effect added, my dog perked up, lifted his head, raised his ears, and did that head tilt thing. That sound effect must have been created with a dog toy. 🐕🧸😅 After the third time I rewound it for the laughs he had to get up and go check the TV area for any wayward toys! 😅

Box question: Would it have been easier to make a normal box the size you want, and then cut it into two halves at the angle you want? Looks like making two sides made it difficult to match up perfectly.
@blcouch
@blcouch Жыл бұрын
A lot of boxes are made exactly that way. I’m not sure about any advantage this way provides that building whole and cutting does not.

if it was a straight 90 or 45 cut i could see that as not an issue but judging by the angle of that box matching it up exactly on both sides once it was all closed in is potential for misalignment. it's possible but I would still cut my side walls and assemble after that to ensure it would open/close without being janky.
@Kami8705
@Kami8705 Жыл бұрын
Yes, doing it that way would be far easier, but there's no real advantage as far as strength of construction either way. It would be a bit more math potentially because you have to line up your blade angle to the angle of the sides, but it's a minor trade off at worst

Cool build. One option to consider is just putting the 4 XLR connections on the outside of the box with a nice cover. Pat's comment about the power bank is a pretty cool idea, it would be neat to see a small power system (Jackery 240/290??) repackaged to fit in the box and provide power.

Great bit of kit. My only question is why not use a magnet instead of the clasp for the walnut lid?
@Frank_D14
@Frank_D14 Жыл бұрын
If i had to guess it would be the age old logic of " Because I had it ". Could also be not wanting to put magnets near the microphones or electronics or easier install than mounting magnets. But I'm sure it was just a "because we wanted to" I doubt there is a specific reason for it
@the-inatorinator
@the-inatorinator Жыл бұрын
While I was watching I had the same thought, but then I figured that if the case was jostled enough, it might undo a magnet. And I'm sure they wouldn't want anything to come loose while travelling!

i made an effects pedal box for guitar pedal with all these exact same things a few years back. only difference was that i has a built in port to run the cables out of the box (to connect power and to the amp) and i did the inside with a fuzzy type liner, so that i only had to put velcro on whatever i put in there and it stuck to the inside. same latches, corners, hinges, handles, covering, it brought back memories.

an upgrade to consider, they make sd card extenders/relocators that have a stub to plug into the card slot, a ribbon cable, and a new sd card cube. one of those could be put in an easily accessable location so you dont have to find the slot in the small space in the back.

I really like this, but I would want to change 2 things on this build. 1. the mixer/recorder is recessed into the box - I would want the box to be no higher than the edge of the board so I can ergonomically keep my hands on the faders and not feel like i'm bumping the box near the bottom. (it would drive me nuts). this *could* be accomplished by simply adding spacers to the bottom of the recorder with the current implementation to bring the surface of the recorder's control panel flush with the top of the box. 2. as Pat was saying, the recorder can be operated with full portability, I would want to dedicate an area of the box to at least 2 100wh capacity (the legal limit for flying on an airplane) lithium ion usb battery banks (so you can have a field backup). this would allow this rig to record anywhere unhindered by power concerns. I would suggest securing these power banks with some removable velcro (I personally favor 3m command picture hanging strips for most electronics because they are thin, strong, but easily removable from the device without residue but also really easy to mount and unmount (i have giant white boards hung on my wall with them, they are fantastic)

I must say that's a lovely custom case. At the same time I was wondering about two of your choices. Why such thick and heavy wood if the case is ment for traveling? And why didn't you use recessed latches and handle hardware on the outside? Also I would paint the wood black before attaching the Tolex in case it gets cut or torn during transportation. All probably a time and budget based choice... Love your channel, keep up the good work!

Fantastic, Bob! Really amazing work! 😃 I know audio doesn't work like that, you still need a quiet place to record... But imagine if it was possible to use something like that on a bar table with friends! 😂 (I thought about this because when I lived in Sao Paulo I used to meet friends at an specific bar once a month, always on Saturdays! And it was great, many of them had KZfaq channels - in Portuguese, of course - and so on!) Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
