Open ended cone = megaphone every time. Lol I’d say replicate. Could be fun to have different lights, but if they’re in a row at least having the two outside ones the same seems more aesthetically pleasing. IMO.

I love that reaction at 6:20 "Oh that worked pretty well" genuine satisfaction. Something that I would love for you to try (it's definitely a challenge but can be simplified with the cnc) is a pendant light that you make using segmented turning. It'd fix the grain direction issue you had with just the light veneer itself, and would make a really cool pattern.

That was originally the plan, but my wife liked the look of the plywood layers. I had a lot of scrap and the direction didn't matter.

Hi Bob! I used to fancy myself as a custom drum builder. I used to make custom plywood drum shells from veneer so I have a lot of experience turning veneer into cylinders (and what is a cone if not a wacky cylinder). I would use something similar to your 'plywood' lamp shade (just a bit larger) as a vacuum form to make your own 'plywood' lamp shade from veneer. I would use 4 to 6 layers of standard 1/42 production veneer, gluing them up as a lamination. Birch makes for a very forgiving species. A vacuum with a bag would work very well here. The bag should wrap around and 'incase' the form just fine. I wouldn't try to glue up 4 - 6 veneers at once, just for your sanity. 2 -3 layers at a time would be manageable. Alternating those seams will most likely cancel out the warping that the variation in the grain is causing. I think you were on the right track with soaking the veneer to take the general shape. It might not be necessary in this case, but it could help during the glue up. The glue type is important, and the glue I recommend the most is Ultra-CAT resin glue. I've never had a problem with bubbling or delamination. It is also super rigid and has very little spring-back, but I don't think spring-back will ever be an issue with cones and cylinders. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help

For trying to make a veneer cone, try making a 3D printed form and then laser cutting individual pie shapes and then glue them in overlapping layers, you would also get a consistent grain match as well. Wood segments will hold up better and be more uniform. I also suggest making 3 identical pendants.

Plywood is going to be stronger, but the veneer will be lighter. Honestly, I think skipped over the right solution so far... Laser cut styrene sheets for the shades, then turn top and bottom rings to hold the shape. That gives the wood accent, the styrene is already white, you could paint the inside with a buffable silver paint to make a reflector if you want to, and with a plastene (sp?) Welding solvent, there wouldn't be the overlap where it was glued up. As for the next one... What about using the laser to cut, say, ten wedges to laminate on the inside of the plywood cone? Personal preference, I'm not a fan of plywood edges being visible, I prefer solid wood, but again, that's personal aesthetic preference.

Ran into a similar situation building sets for our upcoming VBS. We had an idea, started working on it, and realized very quickly that it wasn't going to work. Quick walk around the campus and looking at other materials gave us a new plan, which is turning out much better. Moral of the story, sometimes you learn that you have to drop back, punt, and try something different. You learn from the prototype and make something a lot better.

Great Job Bob... I love how you show the process of each option, and not afraid to switch gears when things don't turn out the way it was expected. That's exactly what happens to most of us... improving on a design. I like the wood turned one best. The lamp looks great, and having others lights done the same is best IMHO, as they are close together, however if they were in different areas of the kitchen or house, you could totally make them different. Anyway keep up the great work 👍

An easy way to cut thinner materials on the Glowforge is to spray a sheet of acrylic with EasyTack adhesive, lay down your veneer onto the tacky acrylic, make your cut all the way through the veneer and when it’s finished, you should be able to peel the veneer from the acrylic sheet easily. Then you can reuse the same acrylic sheet to laser cut fabric and other thinner materials (or small parts that want to fall into the crumb tray). Awesome video, BTW.

I think the plywood cones came out very nice. I also think three of the same shape would look best. For veneer cone, I think it would make sense to cut two pieces for the cone, each oriented in different directions to the grain. Pick the prettiest one for the inside, use the second one as an outside layer. Laminate those two pieces together to make the cones. For the glue up I would suggest turning a ring from plywood--or just routing a circle in a square/rectangular piece of plywood--to keep the cone round at the base while it dries. Once it's dry, even out the top and bottom as needed then turn a piece like the cherry one you used but you will then be able to match the inside of the cherry "cap" to the outside of the cone. I think I would glue the cap to the cone, then finish as you want. This 2-ply veneer cone should be plenty rigid enough to hold the shape you want and also be just thick enough to take a good finish. And it will still be fairly light weight so not much strain on the drop cord/socket.

Definitely love the way the turned pendant came out, just like pretty much everyone else here! An idea if you did want to mix things up a bit, maybe make the outside pendants the same turned plywood, but the middle one could be different? That way you still get symmetry overall and Josh can calm his nerves

Honestly, those plywood cones gave me an idea. Instead of stacking the regular plywood, make it into patterned plywood first and then make it the pendant lights. Paint the outside white and treat the inside with some beeswax or light oil to enhance the color of the wood. Boom, awesome lights to look at. Also, keep the pure wood top and the white 3D print on the inside. Then you've gotten yourself some gorgeous lights that will be part of the attention grabbers for the room, which is usually why anyone would want unique lights in the first place imo. I'm not really worried about the weight. People are hanging concrete lights from their plasterboard ceilings, so just use a strong enough set of anchors and it's fine

Another great project Bob. A couple of thoughts. 1 - you could have laid out the cone templates better so that the grain direction matched on the veneer seam. 2 - you could have reinforced the veneer with something to stiffen them - cylinder veneer lamps use a Perspex tube that enables the light to pass through. You could have used fibreglass or built up layers veneer, or a thin ply cone. 3 - you could line the ply version with veneer on the inside to get a grain effect rather than the ply layers.

Definitely make all three pendants the same. From what I’ve already seen of the kitchen, you’ve got other elements (like your super cool stove and hood) that are going to serve as your feature pieces in the room. If you have a bunch of different pendants, it may start to feel a bit chaotic and your eye isn’t going to know where to look first. Love how the kitchen is coming together and love how the pendant “turned” out (Sorry, not sorry).

To fight the grain issue on the veneer version you could build it like plywood. Use 2 or 3 layers over lapping with the seams at 180 or 120 degrees respectively and the grains crossing at 90 or 30 degrees. This would balance the forces making it more round and stiffer. And the over lapping means you don't have to stack the seams to close it. You just butt them together and the other layers hold it shut. I like the veneer idea but no paint. I would love to see the light leak through and light up the grain. You could also turn it upside down and make a floor lamp too.
