In this Illustrator Tutorial I will show you how to create an overlapping text effect. This is a great technique that can be applied to logos, title treatments, and more. I will show you how to use the Knife Tool along with Pathfinder and other helpful tips along the way.

Great tutorial, thank you =D 1:15 "T": text layer, text=DOC 4:30 pathfinder panel: hit "combine"> "V": select the rest "C", hit "delete", now the empty edge (deleted after combined) will show

I've watched this like20 times and am amazed at how much I miss each time LOL. You go so fast but I am still able to follow when I stop and replay and find the areas you're referencing. Thanks so much for this tutorial, its exactly what I needed to figure out a new spine on simplified logotext when requested by my clients. Excellent tutorial but admittedly, I'm going to need to watch this a few more times to fully understand the procedures. I have a "similar" project but not exactly the same situation as in your tutorial. I hoping that it won't be absolutely necessary to add a stroke to each object (because that won't work for me). I could successfully do it. Thanks for explaining it well. I am just not able to make out the use of applying stroke, then expanding and merging it. Why did we take those steps.? I am just a beginner so kindly explain.

I think way faster to do an overlapping text with a shape building tool. And instead of using strokes I would use an offset path. Another super fast option is to use a pathfinder tool and it's very easy to get same effect in no time. Your way is an interesting and complicated way to do it. I'll try that too, thank you.

It's not working for me. Expand is greyed out, so I just used expand appearance. I didn't get the outline and I followed step by step 3 different times. Not sure what I'm doing wrong

This is really cool. Except when I did a Create Outline on my text, it doesn't let me fill the color in. I am using Adobe Illustrator CC 2019. That I don't have the Gotham Font.

There's a tool called "intertwined". As easy as marking the area for intertwining.

I am ecstatic Canva finally gave us the option for curved text. I mean it is about time for such a simple feature. But what we also need is a line or border option like Microsoft word has. We should be able to choose the thickness of the line, or type of line (dotted, dashes) or color . There is no way we should still be adjusting rectangles in 2020.

How do you make the outline transparent? Where it will still show the effort of the outline on any background color?

That can be done by selecting the shapes and going to Object > Expand. After that, select the color you want to remove with the Direct Selection Tool (A) and then go to Select > Similar > Fill color and delete.

With shape builder tool you would make this in 2-3 minutes if not earlier, this just overly complicated for newcomers. I know they can learn other useful stuff, but for this exact example nah

pro tip: forget all this complicated nonsense and use the following method... stop at 2:08 and 1 - offset path to your liking 2 - select all and pick the shape builder tool 3 - hold alt and delete the 'overlapping' parts to your desire same result and 3 times easier and quicker
