Low German or Low Saxon is a West Germanic language variety spoken mainly in Northern Germany and the northeastern part of the Netherlands. It is also spoken to a lesser extent in the German diaspora worldwide; e.g., Plautdietsch (Mennonite Low German)
Low German is most closely related to Frisian and English, with which it forms the North Sea Germanic group of the West Germanic languages. The Low German dialects spoken in the Netherlands are mostly referred to as Low Saxon.
The question of whether today's Low German should be considered a separate language or a dialect of German or even Dutch has been a point of contention. Linguistics offers no simple, generally accepted criterion to decide the question.
Central German or Middle German is a group of High German dialects spoken from the Rhineland in the west to the former eastern territories of Germany.
Central German divides into two subgroups, West Central German and East Central German.
Central German is distinguished by having experienced the High German consonant shift to a lesser degree than Upper German.
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

My grandmother is Swäbisch, but unfortunately she can't really speak her language anymore. In the past 50-60 years she haven't used it, she was only speaking Hungarian, so she actually forgot her native language in these years.

So I’m guessing in English, the “w” in “two” used to be pronounced? Because I can hear it in these languages and I used to wonder why “two” has a random “w” in it.
@brace6136

Yes it did and the one used to be pronounced as oon but over time it became won
@marcasdebarun6879

Yes, historically the w was lost before o, which can also be seen with other words like ‘sword’, and also in other contexts, for example ‘answer’.

W in English is double-u, but in German it’s double-v. In the olden days, the letter v was used to transcribed the sounds for what is now u, v and w. It was later adapted which is why we have these varieties. In Germanic languages there was a W, which was closer to how the English pronounce W, but in these sound changed into a v-sound in other Germanic languages.
@alexstorm2749

Yes, just like in Russian - dva. It’s very similar to the English - two and Low German - twa.
@waltergro9102
@waltergro9102 Жыл бұрын
@@MB-tb6jy I know that's it's claimed that the German w is actually v. But most Germans don't pronounce it like that. The German w has a slight friction. Maybe that's the reason it's described as v. But it sounds more similar to English w than to English v. V is actually the voiced equivalent of unvoiced f. But that's not the way most Germans pronounce w.

1:37 look at the last two dialects, ever wondered why TWO is "TWEE" which is spelled as "dvee"? Because cultures merged from both german settlers and slavs that lived there and got germanized, therefore there are more dialects that still resemble slavic words for example that "twee" and slavic "dva" which in most slavic languages means two.
