Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
Special Thanks to Bastien! :D
Mentonasc, the dialect spoken in Menton and surrounding areas, is often classified as belonging to the Occitan linguistic area, although its classification is a matter of debate. While it bears the influence of Provencal Nissart, it also exhibits structural features and a lexicon akin to Ligurian Alpins. Some argue that its classification is more political-cultural than linguistic. Testimonies suggest that a Mentonnais speaker finds it easier to communicate with a Ligurian from Ventimiglia than with a Provencal Occitan from Marseille.

Did you notice that the word for "orange" is "purtugà"?

Yes that orange word comes from Arabic

@@johnsmith-ir1ne I thought lanranja (port.), naranja (esp.), and arancia (it.) came from Arabic, and it looked like purtugà meant "Portugal."
@desanipt

@@bob___ Both are true! The thing is a bitter variety of oranges was the first to arrive in Europe through the Arabic trade routes in the middle ages. And that's why arancia, orange, laranja, naranja all derive from an Arabic word (which came from Persian itself, I think). Meanwhile the Portuguese brought sweeter varieties of oranges from Asia from the 16th century onwards. In many regions people gave it a name based on the fact that it was the oranges the Portuguese brought [to differentiate it from the older more bitter varieties]. In the end, these sweeter varieties became the dominant ones to be traded, eaten and seen. So much so that the name they gave those oranges, generalized to be the name of oranges in general. This is true for most languages in the eastern Mediterranean and Arabic

Many similarities with Portuguese, like nasal vowels, s as sh in coda, definite articles a/u, gli/lh sound. Closer to the languages of Italy rather than Occitan.

All r's are rhotic. In phonetics, rhotic consonants, or "R-like" sounds, are liquid consonants that are traditionally represented orthographically by symbols derived from the Greek letter rho, including ⟨R⟩, ⟨r⟩ in the Latin script and ⟨Р⟩, ⟨p⟩ in the Cyrillic script. They are transcribed in the International Phonetic Alphabet by upper- or lower-case variants of Roman ⟨R⟩, ⟨r⟩:[1] ⟨r⟩, ⟨ɾ⟩, ⟨ɹ⟩, ⟨ɻ⟩, ⟨ʀ⟩, ⟨ʁ⟩, ⟨ɽ⟩, and ⟨ɺ⟩. Transcriptions for vocalic or semivocalic realisations of underlying rhotics include the ⟨ə̯⟩ and ⟨ɐ̯⟩.

3:30 in mentonasc from every sources, it should be "a camba" no a "gamba" italian

Entre ce qui est écrit dans les livres et ce que disent les gens il a parfois une petite différence. Effectivement dans les livres c’est écrit « camba » mais j’ai toujours entendu et dit « gamba ». En faite cela aurait été plus correcte de mettre les 2 prononciations.

It's an occitan dialect (from the vivaro-alpin dialect) with heavy influences form alpine ligurian language. But I think the genuine forme for saying "something" is more "quarquarren" than "qualcosa".

Non sapevo neanche che esistesse un dialetto Mentonasc. Comunque, souna bene. Dirrei sia qualcosa tra Italiano, Spagnolo e Francese.🙂
