If you're doing something really sketchy in a place where there might be people that know how to exploit even modern systems (this is rare, and if you are in that situation you should probably be doing this anyway) use a trusted vpn, tor (if possible), and a VM. So if we can make that leap in understanding then we ahould also be able to make the leap that physical viruses have made us who we are today whether we like it or not so the virtual viruses we encounter are going to shift our DNA in ways we have yet to imagine. So if you are not intelligent enough to create a virus that can alter humanity then I hardly see the point in debating it's ethical implications.

The computer hardware wasnt anything like todays, it just wasnt in peoples minds back then, they were just loving their computers, not many people were online back then, believe it or not the Internet almost failed to gain popularity with the masses back then.
