if you are familiar with the game (i am not of chess, but other games i relate), then you dont need to stare at the actual layout. you know which area is stagnate and which are the possible moves. personally, it helps me to maneuver the image than having to rely on the physical reference. of course you have to be familiar with the game before you do that. i am not of chess, but of other games i do this. maybe simplest example is knowing how to do arithmetic in your head vs pen and paper or calculator.

No talent for chess? lol. You're giving away way too easily both your actual grasp at it and your failing to acknowledge what a normal behaviour for a kid could be at that age. He's doing exactly what he should, that is, absorbing everything that surrounds him like a sponge, the funny part is that, on top of it, he played a serious 70ish-move chess game. Yet I'm too lazy to argue so many points in his favor on this particular game. And his love is shown in every conscientious move that he makes, which are every one of them given the fact that his opponent (of a considerable higher level) took no pity on him along the game.
