If you ever get the chance to hear this on a real pipe organ you’ll be blown away on another level. The air around you literally shakes. My wife and I got married on Halloween. The organist at our church agreed to play this at the end of the ceremony, and surprised us by donning a black cape and Phantom of the Opera mask right before coming out to play it.

A toccata is a piece that is played with a light touch, rapidly. A fugue involves a brief melody that is taken up and repeated in another form and then the pieces are woven together together. This one works for a scary movie theme because it's in a minor key. And yes, it has been used in several scary movies. I really enjoyed you reacting to it.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach about 300 years ago. This piece is usually associated w something sinister or macabre, but I don't think it was perceived that way 300 years ago. Classical is some of the most complicated music ever composed and it was all composed in the minds of these musical geniuses. I can't imagine how it was done. These are not short songs. Writing all the notes down by hand and trying to keep track of how it all fits together. Some of them involve many many instruments, let alone coming up with something like this in the first place. It blows my mind.

Yes indeed. Most musicologists agree it was written by a youthful Bach, probably as a breakout piece from the strict musical orthodoxy of the day. Amazingly it virtually disappeared during his lifetime, only to be re-discovered as the most iconic organ piece of all time.

This is Baroque music. The category is usually "classical music". To pronounce it, Tocatta Toe-cah-tta and Fugue is Fyug (g as in 'go'). Kudos to you for opening your mind to new things. Music is soooo much more than you've experienced before. Back wrote these pieces of music to be played by both hands AND feet, so find one that shows it being played. That will be a true thrill. These pieces were written for church music. Back then sheet music wasn't out there. The choirmaster wrote original pieces to be played for catholic church services. God bless your journey into music history.

If you want to listen to more organ music (and you should) try the Scott brothers videos. Jonathan Scott plays the organ (on many different organs) and his brother Tom does the excellent sound and vision recording. When you see the organist playing you can appreciate the skill required, both hands and feet, stop changes etc.

This is highly spiritual music. Bach was a devout Christian (a Lutheran). He is quoted as saying: "any music that ISN'T devoted to G*d is nothing more than an infernal bawling and scraping." Everything he did was for the Almighty. Speaking of religion, Bach played the organ with a seemingly super-human ability. If he were playing in a cathedral and people couldn't see who it was who was playing, they said it had to be either Bach or the Devil playing the organ.
@RooDawson
@RooDawson 15 күн бұрын
Thanks for the heart. You might also want to know that a toccata is a short piece of music intended to showcase a virtuoso's playing ability. Eruption by Eddie Van Halen would be considered a toccata. A fugue (fyoog) isn't really a song or piece of music as much as it is a kind of study that is part Mathematics in its treatment of a particular motif (a series of notes, not quite a theme) and part artistry by linking the mathematical bits together by improvised passages that were written down. The motif is played by two or more voices (registers on the organ in this case) over a few different keys in an attempt to explore the motif's possibilities. Fugue is from the Italian verb fuggire (to flee). It's where we get the word fugitive in English. It means the motif is fleeing, running away with abandon as the listener tries to catch it. I'm sure the great master would be pleased to know his music is begin appreciated on this platform. I wish you health, happiness, and peace. Keep on enjoying your musical explorations.

if you get a chance, check out a video that shows the organist... this is one person playing a triple keyboard with both hands, and also playing with both feet on the pedals under the organ... plus there are handles all over the sides called "stops" that give the pipes different sounds when they are pulled out. That's the origin of the phrase "pulling out all the stops" to indicate going all out on something :)

One thing i love about this piece is all the fake endings. Like he hits power chords but its always slightly off. I dont know music theory so i dont know what chords they are, but he comes to false resolutions and just keeps building until the end. The final chord just feels like home. All the other chords are like the steps to get there, but the end is so fulfilling.

Imagine being an 18th Century peasant. . Living on the land. . The only sounds you heard every day were the sounds of nature and human voices. Once or twice a year (if you were lucky) you might hear someone play a simple flute, or fiddle piece . . But that was it. . Then imagine you travel to the 'big city' and go to a cathederal that has a pipe organ. . . THIS is the 18th century equivalent of a WALL OF MARSHALL AMPS! BASS that punches you in the chest and makes your guts vibrate! The WALLS ARE LITERALLY shaking and the bench you are sitting on is trembling with the POWER of the sound. . And such sublime and complex sounds! Nothing like the peasant music you were used to. . NO WONDER the poor believed everything their clergy told them. . . The power of their god was there for the uneducated peasant to experience.

The music is amazing and beautiful, but if you EVER want a real mind blowing moment, watch an organist play this piece on a real pipe organ. They literally have multiple keyboards and a full set of pedals played by the feet of the musician. Yes, you read that right. They will be using all 4 limbs, 2 arms and 2 feet, usually on 3 different keyboards of the same instrument. It is a solid feat of technical prowess. Most of them play it by memory, not even looking at sheet music.

May I suggest you listen to Xaver Varnus’ performance? It’s much better. This organist rushes through some parts that end up sounding like mush. Slower is better for this piece. Also, a couple notes if I may: 1. This is more what would be considered classical music, rather than opera. Bach also wrote in the baroque style, but I’m not well versed in the distinctions between them. 2. The title is pronounced “to-KAH-tah” and “fyoog”.

Dear JB we all love you loads, as you know..... but my friend.... I have to say this is not Opera, nor is it a song. Opera is sung onstage by usually a fair number of people. This is a solo organ player, playing J.S Bach's most favourite organ Toccata and Fugue. But no matter, it is massively famous all over the world as a mightily drammatic piece of music, used in many films.

Bach is the father. You should learn about fugues, they will blow your mind. Pronounced F-YOU-G. It is not an opera song. It is a keyboard work for the organ. A tocatta is basically a piece that exemplifies virtuosity, and a fugue is a complex piece of contrapuntal music that requires an in depth explanation.. you will have to go down that rabbit hole yourself if you are insterested. Fugue starts at 3:55

You need a bigger sub and a lossless recording. If the camera didn't go blurry on you when they stomp on the pedals, you need a bigger rig. The bottom C on a pipe organ is 16.4Hz. With the stops all the way out, that's a note you don't hear. You don't even "feel it in your chest." The entire room moves. A room the size of a Cathedral. It all moves. It's insane. Most folks' equipment simply can't reproduce the entire piece. Lossy codecs will whack the bottom end because the algorithm assumes the listener's equipment can't reproduce the sounds. An LP has to be mixed to attenuate the low end or the needle will jump out of the groove. This is a massive amount of sound. I hope you (and everybody else) get a chance to hear this thing performed live on a full-sized organ. It is a level beyond any recording. Watching your face in this video it's clear you appreciate it. If you ever get a chance to hear this live, there will be tears.
