3-fach zithrig is a folk music ensemble consisting of four young musicians: Christina Maurer and Bernadette Ober come from Salzburg, Richard Huber and Johannes Rohrer from Styria. The group was formed while studying zither at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.
In addition to their classical instrumentation (3 zithers and a guitar), you can also see them performing with diatonic harmonica, dulcimer and melody guitars every now and then.
The zither has its origins in the 19th century, as an instrument of rural dance music or alpine folk music. Initially frowned upon as a "rag instrument", it later found its way into the salons of the European bourgeoisie.
