I can absolutely relate. I don't do any cosplay myself but I would perfectly fine sitting around in a Star Wars TIE Pilot suit at home putting pictures of it online, but the second you make me wear that outside, I'm going to stand out by a mile and look like an idiot.

You can play along with it (maybe in your character even) and make a kids day. They are just curious. Although I know it's a strange feeling standing out like this be confident about it. When I see people dressed interesting I'm just curious and often think that's pretty cool but maybe also to shy to ask about it or say a compliment. So be open and smile people. The world will be a better place 😊

Please don't be embarrassed. You're doing something you have worked hard to accomplish. Cosplay is great fun. I have 3 Star Trek uniforms and wear them to Trek Cons and Comic Cons all the time, since 2000. You are in good cosplay company. Enjoy it.

Cringe is just internalised bullying. Unless somebody is calling somebody else cringe. Then that's just regular bullying. So in order to get over making your own self cringe, you just have to forgive yourself. Treat yourself how you treat somebody else you saw doing that. You would probably just give them a handout or point them in the right direction.

Also, just anyone wearing something out of the norm. I enjoy alt fashion but always felt insecure when people looked at me until I realized I also look at other alt people because I think they're so cool/pretty and not because of something negative.

Perfectly encapsulates the feeling of doing this! I do cosplays with armor (ex: Marvel Comics War Machine (MVC) and the Biker Scout from Star Wars) and that’s the toughest part. Was part of a parade and I still had to change into my stuff and there was so many people. Luckily once I got my undersuit on it was just placing the armor onto it (using Velcro of course)

As someone who likes to take cosplay photos in public. I just remember this certain fact that you are not the main character in the people who pass by story. They are focused on what they are doing. You may grab their attention just for a second or a minute. So as long as you’re not hurting, anyone have fun with it. plus you might make some kids day.

@YTEdy You never want your costume touching those public restroom floors. What gets me are the constant obvious questions. Back when I worked as a clown and had to get a new radio before an event the "Are you a clown?" questions really annoyed me.

Nah, people for sure look - its remembering thats the problem. Everyone looks at absolutely everyone. If you move, you can count on anyone that notices that movement at least glancing at you. But unless you're doing something truly shocking and weird, like break dancing butt naked, they will forget about you within a day. Your brain simply is not powerful enough to remember or care about one woman putting on a dress and a wig in a carpark.

You get used to it and less embarrassed over time. You also get faster. Fun thing is, places where people are cosplaying? 90% at least are totally on your side, seriously. You're having troubles with any part of your costume, call over a random other person in costume and they're almost always delighted to help. My husband is amazing but he's useless at stays and hair, I just need a spare hand and a second opinion from someone who can actually see. I used to get embarrassed so easily, but it genuinely isn't a big deal. We're a friendly bunch and were nearly all in your shoes once, you don't think we've never gotten looks for being in costume at least partially before arriving at the event?

Reminds me of the time where our LARP group got invited to a screening of the new DnD movie. We all invaded a local fast food restaurant to change and everyone was staring. But there were like 30 of us so we were just laughing and chatting together. Really fun part was when we marched from the restaurant to the Theater, quite a few people asked for pics lol
