A marking knife is one of the most important tools in the woodworking shop. Precise joinery is nearly impossible without one.
While it is of course possible to just use any old utility knife, I think it is really worthwhile to have a dedicated marking knife that is nice to work with.
I recycled an old plane iron from a junk pile and shaped it into a slender blade that just feels good in my hand.
It is not the first marking knife I have made but certainly the best one so far.

That's a really nice knife and such a treat to see someone useing a file properly instead of the usual scrubbing action, treating your tools properly pays dividends as proved by the way your plane cut effortlessly.

Thanks for watching! I‘m glad the people appreciate manual labour. But I do think scrub filing has it‘s place as well :)

Good work, but the marking knife should have a bevel on one side, so it is flush with a ruler or anything you mark against, this way, you can be imprecise depending on the angle you mark in or depending on the height of the piece you mark against.
@imadethischannel
@imadethischannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, I think that is not necessarily the case. This knife has wide, flat bevels on both sides and no micro-bevel. This way, it can be but flat against the work on both sides and score lines directly at the edge of a piece.

Should have ground the bevel on one side only. The flat side runs against what ever your using as a guide. Thus you won't have trouble keeping your line straight....just check out Rob Cosman's KZfaq channel and type in Marking Knife in the search window.....

That is a very popular discussion. If you grind a large, flat bevel on both sides, you can put the knife flat against the work on both sides.

With a single bevel that would make a beautiful marking knife for layout.
@imadethischannel

With these wide and flat bevels it also works nicely as a marking knife that can be put flat against the work on both sides. The one bevel/two bevel thing is mainly a matter of taste, I think.

You should've counter sunk the holes in the wood for pins to have a space to flow in. Yours seem a bit too thin but I guess you won't put too much pressure on them so they'll probably stay
@imadethischannel
@imadethischannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, I think it is fine. The more you countersink the more you have to peen the pins which puts more stress on the wood. The scales are quite thin and I didn‘t want to break them.
@CrazyMagicHomelesGuy
@CrazyMagicHomelesGuy 3 жыл бұрын
@@imadethischannel yes but you're probably file it a lot to not jab your hands with it and it would've been better if they were somewhat flush with food so something would hold it but again the pins are barely necessary. Peice of tape would've been enough to hold it
