Seriously all the people griping about the accents and mispronunciation...from a performance in Salerno ITALY!!! So now We not only expect everyone to speak English in their country, but they have to speak the King’s? Frankly I think the English was good given it was an amateur production with an Italian cast.

My favorite movie of all times is Jesus Christ Superstar. Considering this is done in a theater and in Italy. I totally give this a thumbs up. It doesn’t matter if people get petty about accents or not because that’s not what this is about. They did an amazing rendition of this show and I’m so proud of them. I’m not complaining about anything because I still got the same reaction as I do when I watch the dvd at least 5 or more times a month. I salute them for their dedication and commitment towards making the best version they could. Stand proud guys .. no matter what as a true fan of the original, I totally accept your fanfreakintabulous work of art. Thank you for entertaining me. Bravo 🎉

I am an American singer and this is one of my favorite musicals ever! To sing this music in a language that is not native deserves major kudos. I hope when I'm back in Italy, you have a production mounted...one can hope! :-).

I understand that pronunciation could bother many, but I can see a lot of love and emotion in their performance... It really touched me... So, overall I found it great! The direction and acting are really good, the band is spot on! I honestly don't understand all the criticisms...

JCS is one of my fave shows, and this is, on the whole, one of the best vids I've seen of the show. I have some issues here and there, but overall, I think it's fantastic. And I've seen MANY!

Everyone in the comments needs to understand that this is an Italian theater company doing an English rock opera that’s not in their native language. I didn’t mind the accents at all because as a fan of JCS, I’m impressed by the effort put into it. Plus the guy playing Jesus is hands down gorgeous!

I have been enjoying the recording from 1970 recently, and found this production here on KZfaq. This is fabulous! What a gem! Great cast, great voices, excellent musicianship, and a fun staging / interpretation. 5 stars, two thumbs up, bravo!

WOW! Just WOW! I hope that at least one of the original cast/crew is still on here reading these comments. I was BLOWN away. This was the most emotionally charged, powerful, lyrically, technically, and musically brilliant productions I have ever seen of this. Amazing job to all of you. I wish that I could communicate effectively to all of you how moving this performance was. To all...thank you so much for sharing your God given talents with us here. Really, truly...so inspiring.

I can't imagine how difficult it is to sing in a language that is not your native language. I am sure some of these actors don't even speak English at all. That being said, there are some very impressive performances in this production. Mary Magdalene stands above all. Her ability to emote so richly while singing is very impressive. The actor portraying Jesus has a very powerful and robust voice. He knows when to blow the roof off, and when to be incredibly nuanced. He is both rock star, and balladeer. Judas has a great voice. My only issue with his portrayal, is that he is constantly turned up to 11. He comes in like a wrecking ball. Pilate was amazing. He has a great presence and ability to command a scene.

JCS has always been my favorite musical and I LOVE this production. We found this version four years ago on YT and always watch it every Easter. LOVE the hard rock guitar, the dancing, the Italian accents, and using women to sing some of the male parts. Giorgio Adamo is the most perfect choice to play Jesus ever with his look and charisma.

Beautiful performance. I watched it while sick in Nevada, USA. I can't count how many times I've seen the movie and seen it live 4 times. This performance did NOT disappoint!! Bravo!!

That's pretty dang cool! My first time seeing JC Superstar was in a Presbyterian Cathedral in Salt Lake City, Utah around 1987/88. The effect inside the cathedral with the stained glass and pews was quite surreal. I was maybe 18/19. Blew my mind! It is oddly still relevant.

I really like this production and it sucks that everyone's panties are in a twist about modern clothes or age and gender differences. It's a modern musical. Get a grip , grow up and if you can't embrace change at least don't piss yourself about it. You're missing out. Vive la Difference!

When the original came out i was 7-8 years old and now every time i hear "Superstar" i sing the song we all sang as kids in the school yard: "Jesus Christ Superstar Burnin' down the corner in a motorcar. "Cops come up, we don't care, we got bullet proof underwear". Aahh good times as a kids. Yah can never get it back.

I am in awe of the singing voices. I saw a production in Aberdeen Scotland and it blew my mind. I wept. I sat in the front low and when it came to Jesus singing he locked eyes with me and I could not breath. Now that is something I will never forget. It was 20 years ago. I laughed (rubber chickens hanging up in representing the traders) Awesome couldn't even describe it. this is on a par. The costumes are different but brilliant none the less. I pray people are saved by watching this production.

This is one of the best productions of this musical, i've ever seen. Hard to believe the performers are all amateurs. The lady who plays Mary, who also directed the show, is great. And the the gender reversed casting works.

Mary was phenomenal. Incredible cast of performers. People commenting on their accents are just being stupid. Singing is judged on accents. A voice is an instrument the words and accent is insignificant in judging a singers musicality

It's not accent that is most important, it is intonation. Intonation, the rhythm of the sentence, is extremely important in English. The meaning of a sentence often depends on the stress pattern. In this production, it is a simple fact that the intonation is often wrong.

As a singer, I have to disagree, I think... I don't really think anyone here had a problem with their accents. I certainly didn't. They're Italians singing in English. What do you expect? But when a singer is given a leading role, it is her responsibility to at the very least, get the pronunciation right. The woman who played Mary had a lovely voice, good interpretation of the lyrics and expressive acting skills. But her apparent inability to pronounce "th" was terribly distracting. It's some-thing, not some-tink. That's not her accent. That is simply mispronunciation and should have been corrected. Caiaphas's extra syllable in every phrase was his accent, but at least most of his pronunciation was correct. 😉

Thanks for sharing this. For starters you had me at Jesus! Giorgio Adamo's incredible vocals and amazing stage presence was clearly superstar material. As for the rest of the cast, they put on a great show. No this is not the JC Superstar I fell utterly in love with when I first heard the album & saw the film, both way back in the 70s. Oh those killer vocals/performances by Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson & Yvonne Elliman. But that was a movie with a big budget, an even bigger backdrop,a big cast, multiple takes & vocals that were set down & perfected in a recording studio. JC Superstar live is obviously a completely different beast & an ambitious one to tackle, especially for amateur troupes like this. You work with what you have to make it work.That's grass roots musical theatre for you. So sometimes that means women will play a male role by necessity or design. And still the world turns. Just because something isn't West End/Broadway perfect doesn't make it any less entertaining. This was performed with passion & conviction & I enjoyed it, accents & all!

I have the 1970 recording with Ian Gillan, who in my opinion is much better. I was very disappointed with Neeley in the movie. At the time, I thought that the actor who played St Peter, Philip Toubus, would have been better as Jesus. Little did I know that Philip Toubus, also known as Paul Thomas, would go on to become a major actor and director of pornographic films.

What a really great performance from everyone involved. Seen many productions of JCS. The voices and the band here were totally spot on and this is sung in English by italians. I know Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber would aprove of this as the standard was so high. This is not an easy show to stage but what a great version here, They were pitch perfect and sung with emotion. So many awful productions on KZfaq but no way this one. All involved here should feel so proud. It engaged and moved me,

When this musical play first played on Broadway in 1971, I was 22 or 23 years old. Now 53 years later, I'm now 75 years old. I do not live in NYC. I really liked it a lot! I'm just a little disappointed the play didn't include Jesus rising from death 3 days after the crucification. I think it would have made a better ending. It wouldn't have had to go beyond that. That was the point of the story, that everyone knew he really was Gods Son. Why the writers didn't include that, is disappointing. Bravo to the Italian cast. Excellent performance!

Among the many controversies that the musical produced there is the one on the’absence of the resurrection: it, in fact, ends with the crucifixion, after which the troupe of actors goes back on the bus hippie to go home. You can try, however, to read this scene differently: in the finale the protagonists who really had a contact with Jesus, show a different attitude than the other actors. You see Barry Dennen (Pilate) who, right on the threshold of the’abitacle, stops thoughtfully, turning for a few moments towards the cross; similarly, with sadness in his face, Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene); lastly Carl Anderson (Jude) stares at the cross for a long time, looking at the cross, even when the van leaves through the dusty streets, it is noticed that Ted Neeley (Jesus) is not present among the actors who return and, at the same time, the final’ framing at sunset, shows how the cross is devoid of the figure of Jesus. At some point, one glimpses into the distance, like a’ombra, a shepherd who, slowly, leads a flock: a’image that evokes «I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep» (Jn 10:11). During the film, there are several scenes in which a flock is framed: the most intense one represents Judas who, just after betraying Jesus in the last supper, runs away scattering a flock of reddish color, with a, like the blood that will be shed. Now, in the’last framing, the cross is empty, the flock is reassembled and those who have had a’experience with Jesus are no longer the same: but these are the disruptive and intimate effects of the Resurrection. I have seen four productions of JCSS, (this one plus the original 1973 movie, the 2000 film, and the 2012 live arena tour,) and this one is my favorite. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful interpretation. I love having the musicians on stage, and they do a great job. The casting for Jesus, Mary and Judas is just wonderful - all are very strong singers and actors, and I can really feel the emotions from these three main characters. Jesus goes from being convincingly loving and caring, to deeply angry, and then exhausted and discouraged. I find him more believable, and a better and more emotional singer, than the Jesus in any of the other productions. When Mary sings to or about Jesus, she is so real, and I love how she covers herself with a shawl in front of Judas after he insults her and her profession. And while I don't think anyone can beat Carl Anderson singing Judas' part in the 1973 version, this man comes closer than any other Judas I have heard. His toying with the noose while he sings about his guilty feelings is a touching bit. The choreography was nicely done, with some impressive dancing. The only weakness in this production for me is Caiaphas and most of his fellow lawyers, who shout instead of singing their lines and don't feel very convincing as the face of the rule of law. All the cast did a very commendable job of singing in English, but I still had a hard time understanding many of the lyrics, which I assume is due to English being my first (and only) language but not theirs.

Leslie Little , well I was born and raised in Germany, so I have that going for me. Learned a little French in high school, some Spanish and a little Italian. Amongst all my colleagues I’m pretty much the only one who can understand our Korean coworker who has a pretty thick accent. Poor girl. I always tease my unilingual American friends, that they are lacking language skills. A Jesus with an Italian accent is quite sexy. 😜

I saw the original when it was on tour, it was amazing to a 13 year old. But, I still enjoy watching other takes on it. I really enjoyed the special on TV a couple off years ago with John Legend as Jesus. I'm just glad it is still being performed. I know every word of it, and enjoy it each time.

It can't be easy to learn such a complex, haunting and unusual musical - especially when it isn't in your native language. English is difficult at best and to have to sing it.... To me, that just made this more impressive.

No he visto nunca en KZfaq un vídeo que suscite una división tan radical. Unos opinan que la versión es fantástica y otros que es terrible. Es sorprendente esa discrepancia. Enfin, yo soy de los primeros. Creo que es una versión muy buena, tanto a nivel de cantantes como de músicos. Es insólito obtener tanta calidad en un montaje local. Pueden estar muy orgullosos, esta producción puede ir por todo el mundo sin la menor duda. ENHORABUENA A TODOS !!!!!

Excellent emotional performance as Mary & Jesus. Great voices. The foreign accents add to it. It was long ago and in a foreign land.

Perfect my faith in Jesus as a Christian is getting so overwhelming it is our duty as Christians to pray to Jesus on the cross at least once in your life that he suffers no pain and his passing be peaceful amen prayer is a miracle even 2020 years ago prayer will still help him please do this Christians pass the word on amen amazing performance I shared this with local scout group to watch hopefully on big screen x

not sure what you are asking for, is it that with our prayers JESUS would not have suffered pain on the Cross and that his death would have been peaceful? I also hate the idea of Jesus' Passion and Crucifixion, wish I could change that

@@jerryg3524 Hi Crazy idea our prayers would ease Christ's suffering on the cross!!! ON the contrary! It was His suffering on the cross that paid the price of our salvation from hell! No way could it have been otherwise! That's what He agonized over in Gethsemane. Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua.

I think I understand what Yoga raver BPH is asking, that is, that we miraculously make Yeshua's Passion less cruel through prayer. I personally wish Christ had not bought our salvation in such a terrible way. Whether he was or was not the personification of Israel as the Suffering Servant (Isaiah, 52-53) it does upset me a lot

I thought this was pretty good...especially Jesus who did a great job, we must not forget this is a cast singing in something that is not their native language, Im syre if yo get a group of English singers and ask them to sing in Italian they wouldnt do as good a job, unlike some others I enjoyed Judas, he was trying hard to make the role 'real' and I like that. I have seen many versions of JCS and this rates pretty high.

This play was written and edited first in the early 1970s, when I was a child (eleven or twelve years old). I have ever heard of since. This is the first time I am listening to it. It's wonderful, in a way I ever couldn't believe. I am working, in the office, at times joyfully listening to this play.

I saw the play at Universal Studios in the summer of 1972, also with Ted Neeley and Meredith McCrae before they did the movie. It was memorable.

All of this back & forth about this accent or that language reminds me of a beloved uncle of the heroine of Sydney Sheldon's "Master Of The Game" This favored uncle was Italian, and he absolutely loathed the English language. He was of the belief any language which took a noble and melodious name like "Giuseppe Verde" and turned it into "Joe Green" was akin to the grunts & growls of Neanderthal men...

I've been lucky to have seen on stage several productions of JCS in Europe & the US, as well as the film version. They were all great. This Italian one is impressive in most, if not all parts. Giorgio Adamo, apart from a fine actor, is the most physically beautiful Jesus I've ever seen.

One of the few I've seen that includes Then We Are Decided. Love Pilate (except the wig), Caiaphas, not just because of his coat, female Annas reminds of Patti LuPone as a Greek Matriarch in Frasier , but Judas is excellent!

Hi, this project is born by an amateur production by arrangement with Really Useful Group LTD but all the members of this project are great artist! In the special cast there are three affirmated actors/singers and supervision of Steve Balsamo (Jesus in Lloyd Webber vers.)... the result is an amazing version! Thanks. (sorry for my english)

I earned $35 when I was 15 to go see this live in Indiana. Worked by butt off😀😀😀 I'm 62 now so at 15yrs old earning $35 took a lot. Lol. 3 days before the show...guess who came down with streapthroat. DAMN it. Lol. Yep me. So I'm finally getting what I paid for. Haha. Of course there were no refunds back then. Oh well. Thx for the show

I have the movie on DVD. Saw the movie in theatre when it was released. I love that it was open air and the voices were to me reaching the heavens. For what it is worth...Happy Easter All.
