We often think of imagination as the childhish phenomenon of daydreaming. For Pascal, however, he views imagination to include things like unconscious biases. For example, when we see a judge wear their signature robe who speaks in a firm voice, we view them as more authoritative even though these things don’t reasonably relate to authority. These persuasive mental connections fall under imagination for Pascal.
The question, however, is whether imagination is more dominant than reason in humans. For Pascal, the answer is usually yes. #philosophy #pascal #blaisepascal

At first glance I believe Pascal is correct. If you think of imagination as the human capacity to create abstract concepts from a material reality (which to me sounds entirely reasonable) then without it it would be impossible for us to have any ideas such as justice, good, evil and so on. And indeed what is empathy if not the result of one's capacity to use imagination so that one can see him or herself in the other's place?

Pascal was a scientist also. I think imagination is part of being a scientist. I am a Chemist. I love science fiction and I think science fiction provides goals for scientists to which to aspire. My mother is an Attorney. I remember she was mad a me one time for watching Star Trek and said it was all fake and "made up" and I should focus on reality. I asked what about imagination? She was like "no". I thought- 'Thank God I have an imagination because apparently not everyone does.' I'm not dissing Attorneys. It was just that way in my Mom's case. (no pun intended).

For sure, Pascal’s cart is the one to be on. As to reason v imagination, that depends on the individual, at least that’s what I’ve noticed. There are no hard and fast rules for having one or the other. But in life, we need a balance of both. However Pascal’s observation of law being fashion in a social sense is spot on.

Pascal seems to be preempting Hume on this; his 'imagination' is similar to Hume's 'passions'. Hume: "Reason is, and ought only to be, the slave of the passions."

You pronounced the s at the end of Pensées, but it’s actually silent.

In all honesty, the quote struck me as silly/meaningless. Something felt off. Lol. But i didn’t doubt he said that
