2x4 Pencil Box with Sliding lid

Years ago I came across an old house that was being renovated and spotted a 2x4 sticking out of the trash so I grabbed it. Since the growth rings were very tight and thought that I would build a nice box for some of my mechanical pencils with it.
After planing the lumber and cutting the 2x4 into quarter sawn strips I glued a few of them up to create the base and the lid for my box.
Hand planing and sanding the wood now saves a bunch of time down the road.
~ Dimensions ~
I was only really concerned about the inside dimensions of the box which for me were:
180mm long
90mm wide
25mm deep
~ Cutting ~
After cutting the pieces to length, I needed to cut a thin groove down the length of the sides in this case 25mm from one edge.
The front also needed to be cut through in order to allow for the lid to slide through resulting in a front that is 25 mm tall.
~ Fitting the lid ~
In order to shape the lid, I used my block plane to chamfer the edge until it slid easily through the groove. Once the lid fit I then shaped the lid by blending the chamfer into a nice easy curve.
~ Glue up~
To lend a hand with the glue up I used my 1x2x3 blocks to make sure things were nice and square. I also started off using Wood glue, then switched to CA glue as it is plenty strong enough and sets up much faster.
~ Finishing ~
After the glue had cured it was time for some light sanding, mainly to remove the CA glue that soaked out.
Once everything was sanded to 400 grit I applied a few thin coats of tung oil.

Excellent use of stop blocks and nice stain for that type of wood. Well done! I also like shaving the lid to the angle, instead of cutting a dato on the edges for it to slide. That little extra touch.

beautiful piece but so complicated for a simple project.......I make boxes out of pine also and people tend to look down on pine but for some projects you can do nice work.

haha, I do have some Veritas Set-Up Blocks but they were around $100 for 2 sets. these 1x2x3 blocks are amazing and maybe $25 for 2. At least they were when I bought them years ago.

Nice project. My only suggestion is to use a stop block on your sled for repeat cuts.

Yea, Some times I will do that, in this case I wasn't working to any specific side so I would double them up and clean up the difference. What I really should do is make a nice cross cut sled that has a proper stop block :)

Thanks! I like to use reference items whenever possible. In this case I needed the box to fit a pencil and an eraser. So those blocks let me work without worrying too much about the actual measurements.

Yea, it was actually a really nice piece of wood. I'd guess the board was 70+ years old, and who knows how old the tree was. It's not very easy to find tight grained pine like this. Thanks for watching!

Stock blocks are amazing, as long as your are referencing the same thing, things should always constantly fit. A lot of my process is based on approximations. I'm in Canada, looking at Pitch Pine it might be a white pine here. I'm not sure it would be common here. But grain that tight is not common! Thanks for watching!

Nice box Adam. I was doing the lat class of the year and explaining quarter sawn. At 00:10 is a perfect example of the opposite. But as you then went on to cut it into strips at 90 degrees, thus making quarter sawn pieces. Happy Christmas

use a push stick every cut or buy a saw stop.

I'd kindly accept a saw stop from you. I use a push stick when the work pieces are very close to the blade as I am sure you saw. A 2x4 is within my comfortable zone of being able to control the work pice safely where a push stick to me feels less in control given the leverage of the material. I appreciate your concern for my safety.

This was an old Pine 2x4 I created this box on the fly, using pencils and an eraser as my reference so I knew that my inside would be the correct size.

A healthy respect for the table saw is good, I use push sticks, blocks, or sleds with it's not safe. Otherwise there are situations where those devices can be a bigger liability.

You always need to be aware of what you are doing and what's going on around you. But I agree, making something small on the table saw can be risky if you don't pay attention.

I feel like you made a beginner style box with three times as many steps as it takes to make a quality box. And you have every tool you need to make it quality. I don’t get it.

Hey Sean, Thanks for the feedback, I am still learning and sharing my process. After some time I'm sure I can simply something more complex, and have a better order of operations. I learned a lot about making this box, and usually have a minimal amount of materials on hand since it's usually salvaged or found. I also prefer to make something based off of reference which is why most steps in this video don't involve measurements.
