Watching this video made me realize how much I miss being a 'film' projectionist. I never worked with IMAX 70mm, only digital, but it brings back memories, none the less. Threading the projectors before every show was an intimate past-time that I wish I could experience again. I envy your job, sir.

IMAX projectionist here in Los Angeles, thanks for sharing! Man, Interstellar was only 5 months ago, but this video got me nostalgic. We haven't had any film to thread for what feels like ages :-(, studios are shifting towards digital. Can't wait til Tomorrowland comes out; unless things change, that's the next scheduled 70mm IMAX release.

fancysnake1 Ugh yeah, I know. I was led to believe by some higher-ups that Tomorrowland would get the 70mm treatment, but found out the week before release that it would be digital :(. And they're replacing our 70mm IMAX with the digital laser IMAX later this year, so looks like Interstellar is to be the last true 70mm IMAX release, sadly.
@fancysnake1

I had no idea.. That's too bad. There's a theater 20 minutes from me that has both Digital and 70mm IMAX capabilities so they should be safe. They don't have real projectionists there and they messed up the sync by adding a corrupt DTS trailer or something and didn't remove the trailer until about 4-5 days after release so whoever caught those shows had to sit though about a full seconds worth of out of sync picture.

I saw Interstellar twice, once in 4K and then a second time I travelled to Leicester Square, London to see it in IMAX 70mm. I personally didn't see that IMAX made much difference seeing it on actual film was beautiful! I love the flickers that appear, it makes everything so much more appreciative. I shall be seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens in film too, for sure.
@dealerovski82
@dealerovski82 9 жыл бұрын
Sorry to have to burst your bubble but Leicester Square didn't run it in IMAX, its only 70mm FILM there. I know, I went to the premiere. The aspect ratio there was 2.27:1 or something. IMAX is aprox 1.43:1 like a square. Its BFI Imax in Waterloo you want to go to, they are the only ones that can show it in full IMAX 15/70mm. Unfortunately the sound was so much better in IMAX then Leicester I truly feel sorry if you thought you really were watching it in IMAX.
@TaryllBaker
@TaryllBaker 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm sure they were showing both versions. Even if I didn't see IMAX, seeing it on actual film was beautiful and at the end of this month I'm seeing it again at Royal Albert Hall with Hans Zimmer and a 60-piece orchestra performing the score live, so yeah. Quite a few different ways, I've seen it.
@dealerovski82
@dealerovski82 9 жыл бұрын
***** They can't show it in IMAX at Leicester, they don't have the equipment, screen size or certificate to do it. I'm just saying, you've seen it all kind of versions except that Nolan itended and that makes me feel sorry for you. .
@TaryllBaker
@TaryllBaker 9 жыл бұрын
But I DID see it as intended. Nolan shoots on film because he believes it's the best way to view it, and so I saw it on film. IMAX doesn't change that fact. And the film was incredible anyway, and the way I watched it didn't affect that. Anyway, I'll be seeing Nolan, Michael Caine and Kip Thorne with Hans and the orchestra in 20 days and that's the best way to watch, in my opinion. Best format ever.

Both formats have their pros and cons, as it stands right now IMAX 15/70mm(which is the technical term) is still the highest resolution. If you choose to see it again, see it in the original format you saw it in. Unfortunately for 4k projection the resolution will not be as great & detailed and the IMAX scenes will be cropped down to regular theater size. IMAX 70mm is they to see this and the format intended by the director.

tom catt Imax is promoting Imax Digital as Imax. There is no clarification for customers for what they are viewing and digital is cheaper with less labor costs in comparison to film but it doesn't show in the ticket prices. So as a customer you're still paying full price for an experience you used to get with real Imax 15/70 film that's simply not here with Digital. Basically we are getting robbed.

They went digital in 2011, but kept the machine upstairs. Before TDKR IMAX came and put both the digital and film projectors on a railing system to change around when film came in. So yes it is still there. The last time the IMAX 70mm was used was for Interstellar. Dunkirk did. It play on IMAX 70mm, but on standard 70mm. I was in negotiations to run TENET IMAX 70mm at New Roc, but then the pandemic came and ruined the release for film sites

@KingdaToro

It's film because digital has nowhere close to the resolution yet. 4K vs roughly 16K for IMAX film. They're moved with forklifts. The shorter films (documentaries and science films) can fit on a pallet fully assembled, so shipping and moving them is relatively trivial. Feature-length films like this are shipped as many individual reels that are assembled into the full print on site. Also, the film is RIDICULOUSLY strong, the equipment will break before it will split.

I've always wondered, even though it's an IMAX 70mm film projection, does it play in the 1.43:1 IMAX aspect ratio with that projector?!

I believe so. I honestly do not remember what the true IMAX ratio was? But that theater was one of the last real imax size theaters in Westchester

Yes. The film runs horizontally. Each frame is 70mm (15 film perforations) wide by 48.5mm high. Normal 70mm runs it vertically, with the same width of 48.5mm as IMAX's height, but a height of only 20.73 mm, five film perforations. So, one IMAX frame is basically three 70mm frames combined and turned on their side. This is why IMAX equipment has to be so huge and robust, the 3x larger frames mean 3x the speed of the film and 3x as much film running through the system each second.

@@KingdaToro Very few feature films utilize the native 1:43 screen size.

@@BeCoShooter Every feature film partially shot with IMAX cameras uses the full screen for the IMAX shots. These will have a shifting aspect ratio, with only the IMAX shots filling the screen. On the Blu-ray, the IMAX shots will be cropped to 16:9.

after the movie finishes, do you have to do it all over again or could it rewind?
@gavinolson5972

On this type of platter system, it pulls from the center and wraps around the outside, so after playing it's left on the takeup platter ready to play again. On reel-to-reel systems (and apparently the older IMAX in one of his other videos), film pulls from and takes up on the outside; these systems have to be rewound, but you would rewind just between the reels or platters and then thread the projector again. In addition to not being designed to run in reverse, it would also be double the wear on a very precise mechanism to rewind in the projector.
