In this podcast we speak with Sven Mevissen, Director of Product Management, Home and Media Solutions, Xperi (parent company to DTS) to discuss the IMAX Enhanced program and the role that DTS:X plays in delivering immersive cinematic sound to home viewers. As of May 15, 2024, Disney+ is the first mainstream streaming service to bring the IMAX Enhanced experience with DTS:X sound into your home. The first of such titles includes the "Queen Rock Montreal" concert film as well as 18 films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X immersive sound differs from traditional surround by adding a height dimension that enables sound to come from not just all around you but above you as well. The partnership between IMAX and DTS allows home viewers to experience IMAX visuals and the IMAX theatrical audio mix at home for the first time.
However, all subscribers of Disney+ may not be able to experience the full impact of IMAX Enhanced with DTS:X sound unless their equipment is compatible. We dive into all the details.
On the panel:
Sven Mevissen, Director of Product Management, Home and Media Solutions, Xperi
Brian Mitchell CEO and Founder, eCoustics
Chris Boylan, Editor at Large, eCoustics

33:09 Great interview guys! Lots of detail but specific case usage is still unclear to me. "Do you think there will be people confused?" Hell yes! 😂 Especially those of us with legacy IMAX Enhanced products. Watched the Queen concert. My phillips projector streaming Disney on Android gave me the choice to play the DTS track✅ My Denon AVRX3600 however doesn't show either IMAX enhanced or DTS. What should people be expecting? DD + or DTS or ...? Or does it mean that this new codec doesn't work (yet) on older equipment like mine?
@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan Ай бұрын
If your Philips projector is actually decoding the DTS:X for Streaming track, then it should transcode the DTS:X for Streaming soundtrack and output it as DTS-HD HRA with DTS:X over HDMI eARC to your receiver. Your receiver should display that as DTS:X. If you did get the "opt-in" panel and you chose the DTS:X track in Disney+, it should work. Make sure you've got HDMI-CEC/HDMI Control turned ON in the projector and receiver as this is a requirement for eARC audio to work properly.

I don't believe either of those can decode the new DTS:X for Streaming codec yet, but I'm surprised that you're seeing the DTS:X logo on the title card. Oh, wait, if you mean you see DTS:X in the list of available formats for that title in Disney+, that means nothing unfortunately. That just lists the formats that this content is available in, on a compatible TV. It lists Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, IMAX Enhance, DTS:X as *available* formats but that doesn't mean your specific device can take advantage of every available format. Have you tried any of the IMAX Enhanced content on Sony Pictures Core (formerly "BRAVIA Core") on the PS5? I know PS5 has access to Sony Picture Core, but I'm not sure if it can decode the DTS:X soundtracks. If it works on Sony Picture Core it should also work on Disney+. But maybe the Disney+ app on PS5 needs an update?

Can confirm: this works with Sony BRAVIA 7 TV connected to Denon AVR-X3800H receiver. I get both the DTS:X and IMAX logos on the receiver and the sound is pretty powerful on both Queen Rock Montreal and Guardians of the Galaxy 3. I did have to play the Dolby Atmos version first before the DTS:X opt-in pop-up window popped up in the bottom right corner of the screen. But once I did that I got DTS:X sound from the IMAX Enhanced titles and "DTS:X" appears on all the IMAX Enhanced title screens in Disney+. . Oddly though, the "Versions" option in Disney+ to select between an IMAX ratio version of a movie and the standard CinemaScope Widescreen version does nothing. No matter what you select, you get the IMAX aspect ratio version (looks like 1.43:1 for Queen Rock Montreal and 1.9:1 for GotG3). Not sure why they went with 1.43:1 aspect ratio on Queen for home use as there are huge windowbox bars (side bars) on a 16:9 TV. The opposite of the letterbox problem. Maybe this is a bug? Will have to do some investigation.

@@ChrisBoylan Will do! And honestly, I bet that’s the IMAX aspect ratio we’re stuck with, since it was originally filmed in full frame, projected on a 5 story building for the concert goers. Remember Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League on HBO Max? Same aspect ratio, I believe.
@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan Ай бұрын
@ealanosborne yes, but selecting the other aspect ratio in "versions" is supposed to give you a choice between IMAX and non-IMAX. Right now, that choice doesn't work. And I tested it on another device. It's not just Sony TVs. The Aspect ratio choice seems to just be broken. I've tested it on Queen and GotG - broken on both. Seems like when they rolled out the DTS feature now they're forcing IMAX aspect ratios. This is *really bad* for those with a CIH Cinemascope screen. Previously I could watch GotG in 2.4:1 on a 2.4:1 projector. Now I'm forced into the 1.9:1 or mixed aspect ratio versions of these titles. On a 2.4:1 screen that means the image expands above and below the screen.

Yay. First confirmed success. Congrats! I'm still waiting for the Sony TV to show up and meanwhile, I can confirm that it does not work with Apple TV 4K, FireTV Stick 4K Max or Roku Streaming Stick 4K+. The DTS-X sound mix probably isn't going to sound completely different from the Dolby Atmos mix, it just may have more expanded dynamic range and possibly a different bass mix. Those Dolby Atmos mixes are already pretty good.

The above question remains unanswered. The poster of the comment has not confirmed audio stream of IMAX DTS:X on receiver is appearing or not appearing. I’m not convinced D+ have enabled audio streaming on select titles for IMAX DTS:X. At this point in time it appears only select titles on Sony Pictures Core app audio stream in IMAX DTS:X.
@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan Ай бұрын
@@theentityai - the commenter has one of the confirmed supported devices (Hisense U8K TV) and described the DTS-X confirmation screen which only appears when Disney+ detects that your device and playback chain support the new DTS-X for Streaming codec. Once enabled, it delivers the DTS-X stream. In the three tests I've done (FireTV, Roku, Apple TV) that screen hasn't appeared because the Disney+ app has determined (rightly so) that my streaming devices do not support DTS-X for Streaming. The problem is that so few devices can decode DTS-X for Streaming that the launch only applies to a fairly small share of the market. But more than Bravia Core (Sony Pictures Core) since that was only fully supported on a single model Sony TV in 2023. But I'd definitely like to hear from more people who have this working already. The whole point of posting this video today was so we'd have a place to talk about it. I knew there would be a *lot* of people trying to figure out why it wasn't working for them today.

@@theentityai I can confirm that it is working for me. And it really sounds quite different. As promised the IMAX mixes contain the full dynamic range of the theatre mix. What it means is that you need to turn up the volume to reference lvl just to hear the dialogue. But when an explosion comes it gets really loud and hits you in the face. I really like it. However the dialogue and the mix in general seems more mudded in comparison to the Atmos-mix. If it had the same clarity as the Atmos and the DR of the IMAX that would be incredible.

Yeah, I hear ya. While I believe that most "regular" consumers use the streaming apps built into their TVs, hobbyists and home theater buffs (and projector owners) usually pick a favorite streaming platform and device and stick with it even when upgrading their TV. I bought my first streaming devices when the ones built into TVs were mostly garbage. I think I've been through 5 or 6 generations of FireTV and Roku sticks, and also have an Apple TV 4K and an android streamer just to round things out for testing purposes. I'm guessing that they started specifically with the Android/Google TV platform for the rollout as it is a relatively "open" development platform and they'd already partnered with enough TV makers (Hisense, TCL, Sony) that they knew the DTS-X codec would be available already on the hardware. And they're following up with LG next because LG already has the DTS codec on their TVs as well (since 2023 I believe). Most of the 3rd party streaming boxes cannot decode the DTS-X codec - because until now, they really didn't have to. This is the first time DTS-X is being delivered on a major streaming platform. So porting this feature to those platforms is a much bigger effort. When the DTS stream could be bitstreamed out of devices that did not specifically have the DTS codec, it was different. But now the streaming device must have the DTS-X codec on -board for this to work. And that's a much more complicated thing to do. I hope that the 2024 FireTV and Roku hardware will have DTS-X decoding but we as customers should probably make some noise about it so they see that it's an important feature. As for a software update for existing FireTVs and Rokus, I'm not holding my breath.

@ChrisBoylan I agree. But where do we speak up? I use the xbox series x and it got a dtsx upgrade a few years ago to where it will do on board atmos or dtsx decoding. I understand it's an older codec, but I would think it would be an easy firmware fix. At least, I hope so.

@@marcmolina9708 - manufacturer's forums (official or unofficial), social media, Reddit. Platforms with powerful processors like PS5, XBox, NVIDIA Shield are most likely to be able to do the upgrade via software so on those it's likely to "only" be a matter of licensing, and consumer demand.

@@marcmolina9708 - Sven told us before we started recording that he can't comment on specific timelines for specific manufacturers as it's not his place to do so. All he could tell is is that they are actively working to get this to as many platforms as possible (both hardware platforms like streaming devices and streaming platforms other than Disney+ and Sony Pictures Core). From our prior conversations, I expect it will come to LG TVs next as they're actively working on that. Apple TV doesn't support DTS at all right now, so don't expect that any time soon. I've tested FireTV and RokuTV sticks today and they definitely don't work. I would think something as powerful as the NVIDIA Shield (which uses the Google TV platform) would be the most likely platform to get it. But there are also these stupid licensing requirements about putting logos on the documentation and on the packaging (which Sven alludes to in the video), so that might actually keep manufacturers from delivering the support as a software update. So the answer to your question is "no one is saying when, but hopefully soon." This is the main reason I wanted to get this video out today, because I think there are a *lot* of people in your boat (including me) who saw this announcement, got excited about it, then figured out we wouldn't have any way to taking advantage of it yet. IMAX Enhanced on Disney+ uses a new version of the DTS:X codec called DTS:X for Streaming or DTS:X Profile 2. The NVIDIA Shield does not decode that format yet. It supports passthrough of DTS:X Profile 1, which is the codec used on Kaleidescape, Blu-ray Disc and Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc (including IMAX Enhanced titles on Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray). I'm guessing the movies on your Plex server are Blu-ray or UHD Blu-ray rips. Profile 1 used a delivery codec of DTS-HD Master Audio (lossless) or DTS-HD High Resolution Audio (lossy) with the DTS:X layer on top of that. DTS:X for Streaming (DTS:X Profile 2) does not use a separate delivery layer and has no passthrough option. It is a lossy but highly efficient codec designed for streaming specifically. When (if) the NVIDIA Shield gets updated to decode DTS:X Profile 2, then DTS:X should start working on the Shield for Disney+.

Thanks for explanation. It’s unfortunate that most enthusiast of IMAX Enhanced DTSX will have to wait for streaming devices to support the format. I don’t think that a lot of consumers/enthusiasts will want to buy a new television just to be able to experience a new a/v format that is limited in the amount of content. I have been waiting for more physical IMAX Enhanced 4K Blu-ray content that was promised years ago. It’s also unfortunate that the final audio format is lossy and not lossless especially since the industry is supporting and promoting that you need to have hardware with HDMI 2.1 specification to listen to Dolby Atmos or DTSX that happens to be only the lossy versions. From what I have heard and read about CEOs of streaming services, they feel that most consumers don’t care about the audio quality as much as the video quality. And because of this, they don’t believe that the increase in price of the subscription for the required bandwidth of a higher audio experience is what most consumers would want to pay for.

An IMAX theater is not even close to an at home theater, IMAX uses all full range speakers, that is speakers that can do 20hz-28,800hz, so they dont need a subwoofer. You can probably count on your hand the amount of home theaters that have all full range speakers and NO subwoofers. Personally, i like my screen better in a widescreen format, rather than the extra height of the IMAX screens, wide-screen is closer to how we actually see things with our eyes 👀. IMAX is very cool and my first IMAX film was the Michael Jordan IMAX documentary and it was simply amazing. I love home theater, but am not certain what IMAX enhanced sound even is, and i have a receiver that is capable of playing and decoding IMAX enhanced. Do we need to replace all our speakers with FULL RANGE speakers? Because thats never going to happen. And its not possible to change the aspect ratio. So what exactly is IMAX ENHANCED?
@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan 29 күн бұрын
IMAX Enhanced sound by DTS:X is a new option to get that IMAX theatrical mix at home (or close to it). You don't need all new speakers, but the better the speakers and amplification you have, the better it will sound. On physical media like UltraHD Blu-ray, DTS:X is delivered in a lossless format, via DTS:HD Master Audio. It's an object-based mix that will scale to fit whatever channel configuration you have with bass management handled by your receiver or pre/pro. IMAX Enhanced Sound by DTS:X for streaming is also sourced from the 12-channel IMAX theatrical mix but it is converted to a standard 5.1.4-channel mix (NOT object-based) using DTS:X Profile 2 for streaming. It maintains the dynamic range and bass profile of the IMAX mix, but is tweaked a bit for the home experience. Again, you don't need IMAX Certified speakers, but the better your speakers are, the better it's going to sound. I think people are going to enjoy the new option, whenever this gets out to more streaming devices. Right now device support is really limited.

Did he see the DTS:X and IMAX logos light up on his receiver when he was playing DTS:X content on Disney+. My guess is he saw both since he did get the DTS:X confirmation panel on screen. There are a few folks posting that they've gotten it working so I think it's just a matter of time before it gets out to more devices and platforms. Sven did say that the "sync device" (receiver or soundbar) doesn't specifically need IMAX Enhanced certification to work. The source device that decodes "DTS:X for Streaming" will convert it to a DTS format that the receiver or soundbar can decode.

@@fragranceandcooking - Sorry that screen shot was taken from the IMAX web site. It's an old list of products that support the *video* component of IMAX Enhanced only. That should not have been included in this video because it is misleading. That's our mistake. Sorry! Unfortunately IMAX hasn't updated this page in quite some time as those products are all about 3 years old. And yes, having multiple "IMAX Enhanced" certified products that don't support DTS:X sound is part of what's confusing about this launch.

Can Xbox series X be used to play DTS:X on Disney + ?
@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan Ай бұрын
I'm gonna say "No" on that one. Even though I just got the DTS-X logo on my receiver when I tested it. Let me explain... if you enable DTS-X on the XBox Series X, it asks you to purchase a license for DTS-X and DTS Headphone:X or try a 14 day trial. So I enabled the trial. Then I went into the Disney+ app and checked out Queen Rock Montreal. There was no DTS-X soundtrack option. Only 5.1. So I played the movie and lo and behold I got the DTS-X logo on my Denon receiver. DTS-X -- NOT IMAX/DTS-X. Even though the Denon receiver is both IMAX Enhanced and DTS-X. And honestly, it didn't sound right. If this were working correctly, the Disney+ app would have had a DTS-X logo on that content, and it would have displayed both DTS and IMAX on the Denon receiver. I believe the XBOX is encoding its own DTS-X soundtrack from the 5.1 mix when you enable DTS-X in the XBox settings menu. The reason I believe this is that once I enabled "DTS-X output" on the XBOX, EVERYTHING on Disney Plus turned into DTS-X on the receiver, including multiple titles I know are not available in DTS-X. And when I switched the XBOX to output audio in Dolby Atmos, then went to "Guardians of the Galaxy, Part 3" on Disney+, the available audio option changed from 5.1 to Dolby Atmos. And that went through fine. So despite the XBOX and my Denon receiver saying I was getting DTS-X from the Queen movie, I think the XBOX was generating its own DTS-X stream from the incoming 5.1-channel stream. I'll confirm with Sven, but yeah, it didn't look right (or sound right) to me.

@ecoustics
@ecoustics Ай бұрын
Quick edit - The Hisense U7G is an older TV that doesn't include the DTS:X Profile 2 codec. From what we understand, the DTS:X Profile 2 decoder has only been available since 2023 model year. Older TVs are not likely to work for this. Hisense U7K (2023 model) is confirmed to work with DTS:X on Disney+. What receiver or soundbar are you using it with? That component also needs to support DTS-X in order to see the DTS-X option on Disney+ and it has to be connected to the TV via HDMI (ARC or eARC). Also, DTS-X is only available on about 19 movies so far (on Disney+). If you search on Disney+ for "Queen Rock Montreal" that is one of the IMAX Enhanced titles with DTS-X sound.
@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan Ай бұрын
If you're not even seeing the Dolby Atmos option on these titles (MCU stuff plus "Queen Rock Montreal") then I suspect whatever receiver or soundbar you're using either doesn't support Dolby Atmos/DTS-X or you have it connected via fiberoptic digital instead of HDMI. You'll need an HDMI connection from the TV to the soundbar or receiver in order to see the Dolby Atmos or DTS-X options in Disney+.

That soundbar definitely supports DTS-X. We reviewed is last year and did test it with DTS-X content. Is it connected to the TV via HDMI eARC? You won't be able to do this over fiberoptic. Did you also check the audio output settings on your TV? The fact that you're not seeing DTS-X or Dolby Atmos on the Queen movie suggests that something is definitely amiss.

@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan Ай бұрын
That's NVIDIA's responsibility. They need to license and implement the DTS:X for Streaming codec for this to work. Probably "just" a matter of licensing payments and software development. Again, this hasn't been an issue until today because this is the first time DTS-X for streaming is being enabled on a mainstream streaming platform. So hopefully all the buzz (and complaints) will lead to streaming companies and streaming platform companies adding support for DTS-X.

What devices like Shield, fire tv, Apple TV or Roku supports DTSX?
@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan Ай бұрын
Not too many right now, unfortunately. For this launch, only a few Android and Google TVs are supported with Disney+ to get DTS:X. Some Sony, Hisense and TCL TVs in the US. Sharp, Xiaomi and Philips in Asia and Europe. Streaming sticks like FireTV and Roku and Shield TV will need to be upgraded to decode DTS:X in order to work for this. It's possible this could be done with software updates but it's up to the device manufacturers to deliver that.

@@Mjaybird - my comments are disappearing, but hopefully this time it will go through. Not sure if TCL had DTS-X decoding in 2019. I think it was added later (2023/2024). But if you load the Disney+ app on your TV, search for Queen Rock Montreal. If your TV does do DTS:X decoding then you'll see the DTS-X logo and you should be good to go as long as you connect it to a DTS-X-capable receiver or sound bar. If you don't see the "DTS-X" option for that movie then your TV probably can't decode DTS-X.

Really guys? It cost a little over a million dollars to have an Imax home theater - accept nothing less - otherwise you can just stream the Disney channels on your current system with different aspect ratios and a new surround sound logo, which will probably confuse most folks anyway. By the way - how much more will it cost? - because no one is going to be confused by that angle when it comes to advertising of all these TV "innovations".
@ChrisBoylan
@ChrisBoylan Ай бұрын
As far as receivers and soundbars, this should work with any existing gear that supports DTS:X so the upgrade for that costs nothing. But the DTS:X for streaming support in the source is required for this to work. It's possible the feature could be delivered to existing streaming devices like NVIDIA Shield or XBOX via a software update. If you use your TV for streaming, and don't own one of the TVs that includes DTS:X for streaming, your next TV might have it. And it's not just a new logo. The DTS:X mix is creatively different from the Dolby Atmos one. It is derived from the IMAX theatrical mix with more dynamic range, and potentially a more "cinematic" sound.

@ecoustics
@ecoustics 13 күн бұрын
Black bars are sometimes necessary in order to fit content shot in one aspect ratio into a screen with a different aspect ratio. The IMAX Enhanced content on Disney+ usually has two "Versions." On the MCU titles, you can select between the 2.35:1 CinemaScope version (which has black bars on any 16:9 TV) and the IMAX aspect ratio version, which normally is taller and uses more of a standard 16:9 TV screen, sometimes for the whole movie, but more often just for select "IMAX Enhanced" scenes. With that aspect ratio, the black bars at top and bottom are much smaller. The Queen movie has a 1.44:1 (roughtly 4:3) version which matches the IMAX presentation, which means it has black bars on the sides. There is also a 1.9:1 ratio version which fills more of the TV screen. Oddly, as of my last testing of this (Friday) only the 1.44:1 version of the Queen movie has the DTS:X audio option. Seems like Disney is still working out some kinks with this launch.
