IMF Slams Biden's Tariffs on Chinese Imports | Vantage with Palki Sharma
A spokesperson for the International Monetary Fund criticised the tariffs announced by US president Joe Biden on imports from China. The IMF has said that trade restrictions will "fragment" the global economy, and that the US will be better served by maintaining open trade policies. The critical comments came days after Biden announced tariffs ranging from 100% for Chinese EVs to 50% for Chinese solar panels. In India, some exporters worry that cheap Chinese goods may flood the Indian market and affect the local industry. Even in January, Indian steel makers had lobbied the Indian government to hike tariffs on steel amid a rise in cheap Chinese imports. Palki Sharma tells you how Biden's tariffs will affect the global economy.

Chinese subsidies have destroyed our industrial base over the last thirty years. Easy to bash the US…but try looking from our perspective. We’d like to maintain some of our industries. Automotive, mining/steel, computer chips etc. There is great risk with being completely idealistic. Balance is easier…in a peaceful world…I agree. Perhaps the successors to Putin, Xe, Biden…will walk a different path. We can only hope.

Likewise when comparing between India and China.....In term of development level, technological advancement, people living standard, freedom of education and movement and overall country status. Talking about India capability to absorb or replace US's demand is pure brag or about India no. One again. Last year, I visited mainland China. Despite having magnificent infrastructure, affordable clean transportation, and safe, comfortable living, I found the Chinese people I met humble and not inclined to brag about their country. I keep saying that the cities in China are already first-world, but it seems that’s not what they think. They said they are happy with the government, and life is much better compared to the last three decades, but they still consider the country not rich.

No you fool, China needs to import all of the materials to build these cars. China has to use USD to pay for those materials because nobody would take their garbage tofu worthless Yuan. China saves some money using their slave labor and paying manufacturing workers less than $1/hour, but their productivity is extremely low so it's a wash. The only way they can compete with U.S. and western companies is by heavily subsidizing the manufacturing. American companies are far more efficient than their Chinese rivals. Just take Tesla for example. They actually pay their workers far more than BYD and give them benefits that BYD workers can only dream of. Tesla still makes a massive profit on each of their cars sold while BYD loses money on each car without the subsidies from Beijing. Not to long ago they had a price war and Tesla lowered there prices twice and BYD to get the CCP to force Tesla to stop because they couldn't compete with them. Tesla made like 25% profit per car while BYD lost money without the subsidies. And BYD is China's flagship EV company. You can clearly see how Tesla is far superior to BYD in terms of running the company.

The United States imported approximately 70,000 made-in-China Ford, Volvo, GM new vehicles in 2023 (By the way, China exported a total of 4.91 million vehicles in 2023, the United States only accounts for 1.4% of China’s auto export market share in 2023 and almost no chinese brand ). No Chinese domestic car manufacturers have taken the initiative to officially sell their cars in the US. 102.5% tax on Chinese EVs, Go ahead. That must 'hurt 'China a lot, LOL. The US is not the center of the world. 30 094 767 new cars were sold in China in 2023 ( 8.1 million of them were electric vehicles ) , meanwhile only 15 604 278 new cars were sold in the usa (1.4 million were EVs). The US is expected to subsidize Tesla with $34B between 2023 and 2030. This isn’t even including the other subsidies that Tesla is going to receive from previous policies. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has subsidized BYD between 2018 and 2022 with the whopping massive amount of $ 3.7B. So the American company got subsidized 10 times more than the Chinese company, out of the $119B in battery subsidies GM got about $21 B, the truth is the US regime is subsidizing their electric vehicles way more than China is. On November 30, 2023 GM announced record $10 billion stock buyback, more than it’s spending on UAW raises- as its electrification push stalls (Source Bloomberg). That share buyback from General Motors was just q4 of 2023, $10 B, they get $20B in subsidies and they spend $10 B giving that money back to shareholders. The money isn’t going to innovation like it should, the money seems to go these bloated bureaucratic corporations where they take the money give it to shareholders or give it to executive bonuses or management teams that don’t know how to build a car, get so complicated convoluted they just can’t do business competitively anymore. They don’t need to, instead of being forced to be competitive, being forced to actually spend the money on R&D and producing a high-quality product, they just put a 102.5% tariff on anybody that they cannot compete.

They are trying to dump that tofu trash in Europe for anything that they can get for them since they already manufactured them... We need to hurry up with this China decoupling. Miss Sharma provides a balanced view in regard to how US and China provide subsidies. The core conflict is a US that is fighting tooth and nail to retain its current #1 position. The hostility China is facing now will just as surely confront India when India reaches its projected position to be a similar economic threat to the US. The US is not interested in a balance of power .

For the sake of World peace it is important to control unfair business practices of china. Remember china only got aggressive since the time it become economically stronger and any further boost to its economy will result in Taiwan invasion. So if the world wants to curtail the china’s expansionist policy Economic control is the only way. Every penny the world is paying to china by buying its goods is helping china to buy more bullets and missiles. The Saving made by buying cheap chinas good is paid in double by countries needing to expand their own defence budget and also supporting the social welfare expenditure in their own countries resulting in job and business losses, unemployment and social uneasiness due to cheap chinese goods. What seems to be a Saving is actually a very lose making proposition in the long run. This has been evident in the last two to three decades where chinese economy has grown many fold while economy of other countries is not growing at the rate it should.

Protectionism is ridiculous because if every other country decided to be protectionist, those companies that are trying to be protected will still ultimately go bankrupt, and that's why there are rules overseen and enforced by the multilateral watchdog "the world trade organization", unfortunately the larger economies always feel they can break those rules largely because the global economy is largely dependent on them.
