It was on August 4, 1984, a year after the coup that brought Captain Thomas Sankara to the head of Upper Volta, that it was renamed Burkina Faso. In the spirit of the new power, it was a question not only of banishing a name inherited from colonization, but also of finding a name likely to strengthen national cohesion. This is why it was made up of borrowings from several languages. Burkina means "independent man" or "integrity" in Mooré (spoken by the Mossis) while faso is the "father's house", therefore the homeland, in Dioula.
