my main issue with this live format is fans don't realise how much editing and autotune has gone into their voices and too many fans assume this is RAW live vocals and begin to talk about how their fave has 'swallowed cds' and 'doesn't need autotune' which is super ironic.

I think with the new generations of kpop we are really losing the live singing aspect of a performance, with facial expressions and dancing becoming the main point. Personally I don’t mind the lip sync in some performances but in these type of formats they should really just let the idols sing. Like, give me raw, give me pitchy, give me real

Having good facial expressions is an important talent in making a performer interesting, especially if it flows naturally showing who they are. Idols definitely put practice into that as part of their performance, too. But the effect of good expressions in performing will always pale compared to raw, live vocals. They don't carry as much weight to me. Theatrical expressions don't pull out emotions from me or touch me the same way someone singing a song live does. Watching expressions feels like watching drama (acting), which doesnt move or impact me emotionally like music/singing does. Also, I can feel and appreciate their effort, preparation, dedication, passion for communicating through their voices and song. Be touched by the purity, beauty of music. Both expressions and singing can come from natural talent. But greatness in playing instruments and singing seems to come from practice. Praising expressions still feels like I am praising them more for natural born talent (being) rather than the work that fuels singing (doing).

A problem I have with it’s live’s post mixing/ autotune is that it often seems to Suffocate? Compress? Weirdly distort? the vocals in a way that makes it sound not that great. It’s usually really evident with rappers imo. Another thing I dislike is how they moved the band to the back. I honestly feel like It’s live became less “live” from that point on.

iT's LiVe always gets me laughing with the ludicrous amount of vocal effects, autotune and editing they use. It's about as live as a studio recording by the time it goes out. Killing Voice also ridiculous with how much they edit it. If their voice is killing it as you say, why not let it speak for itself? My personal favourite is Arirang Radio's Singin' Live - you can really tell who is and isn't confident/great at live singing there, and the best of them are unforgettable. Dreamnote's performances there are always the highlight of that year's live vocals for me, the Ghost performance is still absolutely insanely good.

I also watched BTOB's Killing Voice. They all singing live like Eunkwang, you can see this by noticing Peniel's missing rap lyrics in Second Confession & Pray. And because Melody also feel strange with the Killing Voice video, a Dingo staff clarifies that they toned down the volume of live vocals and adlibs because each vocal flows into each other mics, which made it sounds wrong. It was especially noticable when Eunkwang and Hyunsik's adlibs sounds drowned into the background.

They sang live, I can hear Minhyuk's breath, also when Sungjae laughed at the beginning of his part in I'll be your man, thw way Eunkwang sang his part in Blue moon, Hyunsik's live voice is very evident in Beautiful pain, Changsub's expressions are too obvious that he sings live, and Peniel misses some of his parts in 2nd Confession lol if it's a live performance then BTOB will sing live and much better than recordings, too

I can tell you they for sure sang live, they were messing around too much in some places and it was evident lmao. But my issue is that the backtrack was way too loud. I also found out the Dingo team apparently had to do a lot of volume touch up on each member separately because they were so loud the other mics were catching their voices 😂 and that would explain why some of their adlibs sound like they are "drowning" in few moments.

Everyone in killing voice is singing live that's for sure, the thing is that everything is heavily edited afterwards, the pitches the tone the volume.. etc, there as the problem with killing voice is the mixing, the backtrack is usually louder than the singing. I recommend you to look up a video about editing live stages, when a singer is already so good the editing doesn't change much, they just touch up the notes that sound a little off, but it's still editing sooo.. you're not hearing the imperfections Edit: I just remembered one thing, the editing is not the same for everyone in the same group, a member will be 60% edited for example another one just 10% and even 100%, same goes for the back vocals or the pre rec on music shows, even tho it's less live the last few years

The thing is fans REFUSE to believe their idols aren't singing raw. Kpop performances have a lot of assistance through pre-recorded live vocals, autotune, mixing, and backtracking. Yes they might be singing in real time but it's not raw or without tuning. But fans will get really pressed if you tell them that.

AHHH YES FINALLY. I’ve been meaning to discuss this but I’m not sure if anyone can accept the fact that not every single live posted is an actual live vocals of their favs. You covered a lot of different types of live performances which is (not surprisingly) what I have in my mind as well. At the end of the day, broadcasting channel/company of each artists demand everything to be perfect (even if it means slight autotune). Weekly Idol is not necessarily a stage for live perf so I don’t put much hope on that, but the rest of the shows must have the bare minimum (turning their mics on). Any autotune heard - you just gotta accept the fact that k-industry calls for perfections; at all times.

i don’t remember if it’s nct or svt “dingo killing voice” but a member spoke something while someone was singing and it went through lol it could be tuned a bit but for them to go sing a medley and the editors just cover with a studio version would be lowkey disrespectful for any group and they would most likely not have a great after session with the prod. team (just my personal thought on this)

Balanced volume isn't always proof something isn't live, just that there's post-production. They're always going to balance the levels and tweak things and how much they mess with the audio is up to whoever's broadcasting/publishing the finished video but it doesn't mean vocals weren't live at the time of recording. I recently saw Mamamoo and Solar is SO much louder than the others and that's fine in a concert setting, but they HAVE to fix that for broadcasts and recordings because otherwise it would be unlistenable. Using different takes in an edited video of live performances is also not nefarious or anything to me, it's just...how videos are edited. If they wanna use the audio from one take but don't have good coverage of the singer in that moment, they pull video from a different take. The only time I'd have a problem with this is if it's in a show that's claiming everything's done in one take. And I wouldn't say live broadcasted (radio, live music show perfs, etc) are always "raw" either, there's sometimes tuning and stuff that can be done through the sound system. 100% raw would be like...the singer doing a livestream or something, but I think even then you've got filters so these days you can't guarantee 'raw' anything unless it's right in front of you. But it's all still live.

The other thing I think we should talk about is the fact that mics can have software in them that autotune as part of their recordings - they can perform basic note corrections which explains why so many of the singers sound so stable and incredibly accurate. Even outside of the obvious autotune, idk if what we're hearing can be considered 'live vocals'. Plus, mic autotune can be changed to be more prominent which I think we hear frequently on the rapper's mics.

I was so angry tbh when everyone started clowning the boys planet idols for a hot minute because they were so out of tune singing and dancing because like, yes you can sing and dance at the same time but most of the time the actual idol groups aren't doing that and even when the vocals are live while dancing they're edited, autotuned and given the loudest backing track in the world. Like i felt so bad for those boys but mostly i was astounded that so many people were willing to jump on them for being 'bad' at their jobs because of the unrealistic expectations of what a 'live' performance actually consists of

p1harmony the real deal with it’slive it’s annoying the fact that they have the pre-recorded vocal tracks with a live band is so disappointing alone and takes away from the experience. they could have some backup vocalists along with the band if the studio/or company thinks the idols can’t carry it alone. add in all the editing in post. some groups sound way overly processed compared to others.

It’s live is my favorite format! Shoutout to Xiaojun‘s and Kun‘s appearance there, which lives in my head rent free. Two things I also would consider concerning the „post production“ thing: for some of these examples I actually don’t think it necessarily is autotune. It could also be the echo effect of the microphone. The echo sound also does a lot for the voice and is used very frequently and how strong it is really depends on the preference of the team. If it isn’t as strong the voice will sound more clear and raw. There also is a thing called live autotune, which, for example, stray kids uses a lot. As for the killing voice example where you mentioned that sometimes they are too close or too far away from the mike for it to sound like that or that they mouth shape doesn’t change enough while going to a headvoice: I don’t know about that. If your technique is really good the goal actually is to change your mouth shape etc. as little as possible and if you know your way around with the microphone you can also adjust the intensity with which you go on a note, through considering how loud your voice is and adapting it to the distance of the microphone.

Writing before watching, but I have noticed that "It's live" ruins the voices of artists so much. I'm not sure if it's the compression for all voices to be the same loudness, autotune or something else or maybe all of it together, but it just sounds horrible. Even the good artists like Seventeen had to go through it and their beautiful voice tones were almost invisible and ruined, it was horrible, I really do not like how "It's live" edits their artist voices. Here after watching the video, so I wasn't the only one who doesn't like "It's live" as much 😂 I too always watch radio live performances as they're always the closest to being live or actually live. I enjoy killing voice too because at least you can see that the people were ACTUALLY singing and the audio matches, but sometimes for some artists the effects are bit too much. Also it feels just right that the BSS award show performance is in the intro. It was soooo damn good like it was the most live performance together with dancing that I've ever heard, glad that their talent gets recognized, so proud to be their fan! TMI but if I see that there's no live singing in a music show performance and the expressions are so so, I never watch it till the end. The lipsync videos are a "turn-off" immediately, I rarely watch them. Especially for inkigayo the fans scream louder and you can hear how the pre recorded track is played in the venue, it's unfortunate...

Maybe it's because I come from a singing background myself but I find these "live" performances with loads of post production very annoying. If I wanted to listen to an edited studio recording I would open up spotify. A lot of these idols are fully capable of giving a good live performance without any editing (and if they can't it's because companies these days are not interested in actually teaching idols how to sing. They just care about voices that sound cool, not technique. If you want to know what I mean I'd recommend watching studio recording sessions where simple things like singing notes flat are corrected digitally instead of asking the idol to try again.)

yeah its sad that most of these live performances still have mostly filters on the mics but its the only thing we could get as a really live performance😢 tbh this is too much, kpop is making everything too perfect like I want to hear RAW vocals because if they use too much filter its no different to recorded songs.

I think Yes they sang live in the process of make the show but the sound we hear is already pass the master process to make the sound very smooth like butter to make it like they sang very well , like most of the singing show on TV you can find the fancam ver. hear a raw ver. of they singing is good but not that angelical sound without any mistake but when you watch a on air ver. it magically perfect that why I don't believe any show that "LIVE" to be 100% raw singing voice of the singer

I really wish we got less post production editing bc then we lose a lot of the artist’s real voice and choices and even natural imperfections that make a live performance so fun. I get why some editing can be put in there but it’s really too much and it does a disservice to the fans and the artists in the long run. I think the general voice enhancing of the SKZ vid in the end but still a live take is an example of a proper amount Or, at the very least, I wish we wouldn’t advertise things as live when it’s really just a different take from studio combined with a video of the idols holding a mic

@@immastanthat well, I came across this video kzfaq.infobuaZ48yq2iI?feature=share&t=3201 the girl in the video apparently used to be known as Tina in the group BLADY, she's now a KZfaqr called Christine Park / Soobeanie. Didn't know of her until this vid. In the vid she talks about her experience on music shows (I'm assuming this means Inkigayo, KBS, MCountdown etc) and at 53:21 she gets into the fine details about how they make the pre-recorded vocals and how they get mixed with the mic feeds in the performance. Some of it is quite surprising and I thought it would be worth commenting on it if you make a vid abt pre recorded vocals again

im very curious about what u think of the boys planet/zb1 live performances now that bp is officially over! i think for the most part they're 90% live but sometimes i wonder if their vocals have been tuned out a bit in post production for dramatic effect. And now that zb1 did their first performance at kcon they sounded like they did it live but watching the full performance it looks like theyre lip syncing??

i think only the first round was completely raw vocals then edited live vocals then just straight prerecorded vocals to enhance the “improvement” of the trainees and prepare them for the real idol life 😂😂 during kcon, say my name was def live just with loud backtrack idk about here i am it sounded completely lipped but the backtrack could’ve just completely drowned out their voices

honestly it’s a bit tricky, i wouldn’t put myself into mnet survival shows because the editing is crazy and what we hear might not be the truth; anyways what I FEEL LIKE is it was almost entirely live (double position mission was lip-synced when a rap/dance group had a melodic part, like GANG for example, seunghwan and junhyeon didn’t sing), obviously the finale was not live and i have my doubts about the artist battle too, none of it seemed live to me

oh man this feels kinda nostalgic. i used to be a band kid and in the comment section people would also try to figure out whether or not the vocals been edited. thing is though ... those bands performed to a live audience usually in an open area (concerts and festivals). so like, especially if the video is an official upload it made sense that the uploader would tweak the sound at the very least to do a bit of pitch correcting and noise reduction. i don't get the need to edit vocals recorded in a sterile room at all. 😭
