The problem is that the word 'immigrant' has been used as a slur by many white Brits for 'brown' prople from abroad for a long time. So when Brits do the same and move abroad, it erks them to think of themselves with the same word so they call themselves 'expats'

Expat = white Immigrant = brown/yellow

Expat is just a pretentious way of saying immigrant. It's someone who somehow feels a need to differentiate themselves from immigrants of poorer countries even though they're the same. If you leave your home to work in another country you're an immigrant.

Expat is made for people who don't want to be associated with the word "immigrant".

I am yet to hear a white person call themselves an immigrant. Immigrant is a word reserved for coloured people.

Oy, as an example, how many times have you called people from eastern europe expats? How many times has the media in the uk called them expats? Do you see the problem?

You know on the base level I agree with you 100% HOWEVER. The issue I have with the word expat is that many of those that emigrate from a country class themselves as expats which as you say is a perfectly correct term but those same people call those that immigrate to their home country immigrants. The word immigrant is often used as a derogatory term whilst expats is used as a higher class of immigrant. A perfect example of these people are the British expats in Spain who voted to leave the EU so that immigration to the UK is controlled. I mean come on? There is no logic in that at all. Its also the same people who will discuss in front of me that all these immigrants need to go home but when I say "hi, im an immigrant" they say oh no we don't mean YOU you are working and paying tax. The level of uneducation is scary. They will refer to Brits living abroad as expats but us foreigners living in the UK as immigrants. Im not just talking about people I know I'm talking about people I come across and also things I see posted on social media etc. You are absolutely right we all do need to support each other cause we ALL have something in common, we have given up the lives in our home countries to start a life in another country. We need to remove the difference some people put in the words as it is absolutely the same thing. As a Swede I absolutely love following your journey in settling in Sweden and find it awesome that you and other people are choosing to make my home country their home. Swedes are far from perfect though as you know yourself with the encounter you had. I guess what this wall of text is trying to say that if people refer to themselves as expats they can not use the word immigrant to describe people settling in their home country. Hope this makes sense lol

The question should be why british people don't call immigrants to the UK expats?

They have the same exact dictionary meaning, but it's how people use those words that's the problem. Expat is a word used by people who don't want to be called immigrants because apparently to them, the word has a demeaning connotation. You're trying to brush off the problem and pretending that there's no existing argument.

Expat is just a fancy word western people use for an immigrant regardless of the "time period/duration or work factor" plenty of westerners that end up settling in other countries still call themselves "Expats", this is rampant in places like Thailand & Philippines. As opposed to people from other regions of the world when they move to western countries even for a period of work, they are still "immigrants". This is based on my personal experience and observation. Again, let's not kid ourselves here LOL.

Expats eat restaurants, immigrants work in them. Simple. When I was working in Spain I was def an immigrant. So much snobbery/ inverted snobbery! It's mad!

Anyone can be an immigrant and anyone can be an expat. The issue is when the word immigrant is weaponised against people usually in a racist manner. It doesn't change the fundamental difference in the words. Expats are living away from their home country and immigrants are moving permanently to a new home country, as per the definition of an immigrant. There is a clear difference in the terminology.

If someone calls them self an Expat , it’s ok as long as he lives in Britain. If you move to a different country , your called an immigrant. About punctuations, I am sure your Swedish is perfect including punctuations

I always thought that expat is meant for people that will eventually move back or somewhere else and immigrant is meant for those who are planning to stay forever. In my experience, people who describe themselves as expat never give me the feeling that they are blending in at all. But yeah, I haven't met everyone on the planet.

Hmmm. I see what you are saying. And yes, if you consider yourself an expat, so be it. But in most cases, the term "expat"is thrown around to distance oneself from people with no money and resources that have moved to another country in search of a better life. But at the end of the day, Enrique Iglesias is an immigrant, Melania Trump is an immigrant, Salma Hayek and myself. So.... trying to separate immigrants with money from those without is just ugly.

Immigrants have rights. Expats do not. Immigrant is actually a preferred status.

Immigrant leaving the country of his/her origin with the intention of permanently setlling in a foreign country as permanent resident giving up his citizenship and taking up the new citizenship bearing children and make them the citizen of that new country. Expatriate/Expat leaving the country of origin to a foreign country in a legal way for a calculated amount of time for work or social service with the intention of returning back to his/her country of origin and not giving up his citizenship. Example American in China or germany or Saudi arabia working and living there Expat. American in America illegal immigrants no intention of going back to the country of origin settled permanently killed indigenous population.

An Expat is someone who moves to another country but they can very well still live in the country they come from they usually dont give up thier citizenship... an immigrant is some one who leaves thier country because they have to for a reason like "no jobs" " better themselves" "to not Die"

I've lived abroad for 12 years I've always planned to go home eventually. I'd never call myself an immigrant. I'm moving home in 3 months, am I immigrating home? No I'm repatriating.

Expats eventually will return to their country of origin while immigrants will settle in and later become citizens of their country of destination.
