It's not a case of brits not wanting the work. I'm sick to the back teeth of that rhetoric. My boys tried getting fruit picking work and not one place would give them a day's work. That's while there were headlines about stuff rotting because noone would pick it. If you're polish however, they can't take you quick enough

I don't believe the nonsense about Brits not wanting certain jobs. I've visited quite a few places in the UK where Brits are doing jobs which are all done by immigrants in London.

The reason farmers (& others) prefer foreigners is because they can claw back their money by charging rental/accommodation fees. My son (19 at the time) got refused farm work because he refused to live on the farm & pay the fees (we'd discussed it & he was happy to pay me to drop him off & pick him up, 20 minutes drive 8 miles away) not because he refused the hours or the work. A Polish woman I knew quite well, came to the U.K. to temporarily work in a restaurant where 8 of the 10 staff were foreigners. She was in a 3 bed house with 5 others & the house was owned by the brother-in-law of the restaurant owner & 2 of the house sharers worked in his small business. These are real reasons they won't employ Brits, because Brits can't afford to be so financially abused. Mellor saying it was is totally wrong because it's still as rife now (possibly worse) than it ever was. On top of that, many known illegals are employed because the employers know they can get away with only paying 2 or 3 quid an hour & there's nothing the illegals can do about it via the law.

David hits the nail on the head. Its not the immigrants themselves that are the problem, nor is the "diversity". It is the scale of it, 500,000 people, which is a city the size of Edinburgh coming in last year, with zero increase in public services like the NHS, with zero expansion of road networks to cope with increase volume of traffic, with zero building of houses to accommodate this new Edinburgh sized city of people every year..... This is the problem, as it is with respect to people that are already here living on benefits, which will simply continue to grow as a %age of the population. if you continue to bring in endless lines of cheap immigrant labour... I liked freedom of movement for what it offered me, but I could see the very obvious downsides of it for a large %age of the population, not to mention the legal implication of being in the EU.... of course, we're still stuck with binding agreements we're making above the UK state level which nobody voted for, like net zero and possibly worse coming with health ideas from the WHO in the post COVID panic era.

Uhh no shit. People are a resource. Like any resource, if you increase availability you decrease value. So, the more people available to do a job, the lower the wages for said job, while simultaneously increasing output. It's also the reason the government and industry are so keen on "empowering" women to work. You double the workforce overnight, doubling productivity whilst reducing wages. From the government's perspective, you can't tax a housewife.

Everyone in the house of lords should be selected from sovereign civilians similar to jury duty for the duration of twelve months then replaced on a yearly basis with full salary it's easy common sence rules the day !!! Another thing I would do is abolish civil servants pension and replace it with a state pension like everyone else £6 billion savings per year well there's a thought God bless us all

This goes on everywhere. 30 to 40 years ago there was no shortage of woeful tales from highly qualified I.T. staff in the US. In direct contravention of the US visa requirements Indians were hired, who existing staff were forced to train, and then the existing staff were fired. Of course the government turned an eye to all this.

Anne the only reason they don't do it is because the pay is too low. If employers paid a wage that allows people to pay rent/mortgage and bills they could take them. Minimum wage is too low in relation to cost of living, especially for the under 21's. Farmers are always complaining and living in a rural area I can tell you they are amongst the most exploitative on wages. They are in the dark ages, use automation!!! If the business isn't viable it goes under like everyone else, why the hell are we giving subsidies they're glorified benefit claimants.

The government charges VAT on professional qualification courses because such courses are provided by commercial companies who do not receive any public grants. Seems strange we are told we have a shortage in people able to drive HGV's or certificated IT professionals, but government provides no tax rebate and charges VAT on top of such course fees if someone should try and improve their own career prospects by taking such courses. Jobs aren't for life these days and people are going to have to train and retrain for jobs throughout their entire working lives. Government should stop being hostile to retraining our existing workforce.

I would say its most employers taking advantage not just unscrupulous ones, if the market is being undercut with cheap labour everyone else is forced to follow suit or go out of business. There are even some who will hire illegal immigrants cash in hand and pay below minimum wage so how are others going to compete with that. The country is overrun with people not legally able to work so what will happen, the unscrupulous with take advantage.

The farmers don't want UK workers because they can't take advantage of them like they can immigrants. This was made obvious during lockdowns when thousands signed up for work picking but never even got a phone call while farmers were complaining to the government about having no workers to pick their crops. The whole system is a huge scam.
