Immortal's fourth winter opus, Blizzard Beasts, introduced a new sound, and new drummer, to the band. The album continues the legacy of the band's freezing cold sound and snow-covered lyrics, but with a new style of production that was unheard of in the earlier work. Blizzard Beasts features a heavier, fuller, and more frigid sound than its predecessors, brought in part by drummer Horgh's contribution. The endless blast beats and ripping guitar chords are nothing new for Immortal, but they have never sounded quite as intense and harsh as they do on Blizzard Beasts. Here it is from start to finish, in all its grimness and horror.
Intro (0:00)
Blizzard Beasts (0:59)
Nebular Ravens Winter (3:48)
Suns That Sank Below (8:00)
Battlefields (10:48)
Mountains of Might (14:28)
Noctambulant (21:06)
Winter of the Ages (23:29)
Frostdemonstorm (26:01)

This is one of the best Immortal albums ... but I keep saying that about many of them! 'Mountains Of Might' is the best song to offer here - it's cold enough to freeze your balls off!!! Quite the album considering it was recorded after an exhausting tour with the Morbid Ones. They must have been influenced like crazy. This record was a great precursor to "At The Heart Of Winter" - Doubtless! Hails to Immortal - Hails from Canada!

This album is a head-scratcher. After the excellent blizzards of Pure holocaust and battles in the north, they come up with this strange kid. The sound is like an imbecile took care of it, the riffing is all chunky and odd, the album is super short, the voice is totally outside of the mix, the drum sound is like miniature. Sloppiness reigns supreme (like in the ones before, they played sort of like grappling with an actual wind storm in the room), and strip-it-to-the-fucking-bone must have been written very big in the wall when they recorded. The results is very unconventional and unique music, sort of industrial in occasions. That I really can't stop loving.

I remember that Professional musicians (back in the day in 1997)were saying that there wasn't anything good in 1997 when it came to heavy metal, but the critics were wrong. This has to be the "greatest" metal album, ever. This stuff is gold. Too bad that this band did not tour for this album back in the day in 1997. This is where Osmose Records was a (very) popular label and I mean a very popular label under the direction of Herve. This is where Osmose Productions at times said that they were higher than the rock bands, yes, that Osmose records too was a star in its own right. Hilarious in a good way. There is no band in the UK or Europe/Australia/Canada/Asia/India or even the USA that can equal or surpass Blizzard's beasts. The original lineup for Immortal--for this album titled blizzard beasts: Demonaz, Abbath, And Horgh. Frost demon storm is a beautiful song. Jan. 8, 2022, Saturday. USA North America.

To:@@wolfgangdiaz2360: I read this in a Magazine back in the day (1997/1998). I also read a report interview that was done on Demonaz/Abbath on the web that they did not tour. Abbath also mentioned about Demonaz's tendinitis on his muscles that crippled the lead guitarist for some time. I too was aware of Century media news back in the day (which was very informative in the late '90s); it's not like today in 2022. I also had contact with the webmaster from the Immortal site back in the day and If I remember correctly nothing was mentioned about this (about touring in 1997/1998). They toured in 2000 in California but they already had Iscariah (the thin bassist player). Happy Halloween 10-29-2022 Oct. USA. North America.

I always overlooked this album, but listening to how they went back to thrash and death metal a lot more on this, you can make more sense of the development of the classic, furious black metal of the classic Demonaz era and the more Bathory-esque (and Teutonic thrash-influenced) Abbath-led era. The riffs on this, mountains of might especially, are clearly a huge influence on Abbath's later style when he took over... Demonaz did teach him how to play, after all...

People say about the poor production but......It's how it WOULD sound in a winter blizzard if you think about it...Sound being blown around in and out of focus, the band battling a ferocious North wind threatening to topple them, but they just about...Hang in there. Battling the Northern nature as it were..

I think the ' production 'for me anyway makes this still a great album and set them apart ... It's like when the Stranglers released the Black and White album Blizzard Beasts reminds me of some of the 'out there' production on that for some reason. Two completely different but similar in their uniqueness , both raw grit and some good ideas.

@@Absolutely_puck_fakestine not at all-my description is accurate. This is inside a Northern Blizzard . The overproduced is nowhere for this sound to go- There's a huge market for 'demo' production in 2021 in BM 'goat war metal and noise - At least this is one you can return to

Although I already had plenty of other BM albums in the apt, including some older Immortal albums, when I played this one on the radio I felt that the living room had darkened, I have never felt such a dark aura before, I remember saying "this sounds pretty evil" even though I knew the lyrics were probably about frost lands and stuff.

I love this album, it's chaotic in both musicianship and songwriting. I know it's one of their most criticized by Immortal enthusiasts, a typical either "you love it or hate it" situation. I'm curious about the drum sound... I would guess it's full-triggered to a drum machine, the snare sound is always same pitch/velocity, same as the kick drum giving it a dirty industrial feeling in a way.

Perfect description. I couldn't put my finger on it until I read this comment , drums are triggered to fuck and back.
