She's not autotuning her voice. She's singing into a type of vocoder. her real voice comes through, and then whatever keys she is pressing on her keyboard come out exactly as her voice, just in different pitch, like harmonies. Actually very difficult to do, since that's not how you would typically play piano. Her own vocal is natural (well, maybe reverb or something, but no autotune). This song is equally genius in lyrics and music

I definitely interpret this song as being from a child's perspective of divorce/ moving. "Crop circles in the carpet" - where old furniture of the last family was. "Spin me round again & rub my eyes. This can't be happening" - wanting to go back to the time when she was a bit younger and didn't have to worry. "Oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before the takeover, the sweeping insensitivity of this" - in reference to her 'taking-over' a family's old home where their pictures used to hang. "They were here first""Mmm whatcha say, that you only meant well? Well, of course you did" - parents thinking splitting up is what is best for the children. "Mmm whatcha say, that it's all for the best because it is." - a parent not being able to explain the situation, instead telling the child that it's for the best. "Mmm whatcha say, that it's just what we need; you decided this." - child not having a say in the matter. This is just what I take out of this song. It really hits home for me. Such beautiful lyrics with a hauntingly beautiful voice make this one of my absolute favorites.

it’s ironic because i listened to this song when i was moved into my aunt’s house when my parents were about to divorce (they didn’t). i was in an empty carpet room in the summer listening this thru cheap earbuds. now i’m in the military in my barracks listening to this song again and my mom is planning to divorce my dad for real soon.

I have loved this song for years. And have always thought of it from her perspective of a breakup. I'm a 44 y man, that just got left with to kids 9 and 10 after being with their mom for 13 years. I'm fucking bawling my eyes out after reading your comment..

Thanks. You've improved my perception of this song now. I couldn't make up my mind. One of the things I thought was, maybe, a child, grown up, coming back to the old house and reminiscing on her childhood, good and bad.

I was watching and listening to this last night... admiring the beauty of this piece... appreciating the live performance... when I received a phone call that my grandmother had passed away... right as she said... "this can't be happening"... I love this song... Thank you for posting it... it will forever remind me of my grandmother.

Great Scott the dissonance is beautiful. Lol it's not autotuned. The vocoder is used to make an a Capella effect.
@godisibilen81628 жыл бұрын
+Devin Drew This is actually auto-tuned. Well, It's not the real auto-tune plugin but it works just like auto-tune does so you could say it's auto-tuned. You play a chord or a note and your voice changes into that chord / note = It corrects false singing = auto-tune. How would i know? I have this feature on my keyboard. It's called Mic Harmony meaning the mic is in harmony with the keyboard. Try it and you shall see what i'm talking about. People are just making up these bullshit excuses because auto-tune has a really bad reputation. Truth is auto-tune is used in like 99% of the music you hear on radio today. You usually don't hear it but if you listen closely you can actually hear it from time to time. It doesn't necessarily mean that people can't sing. It just makes it easier for them.

+Godis I Bilen 😗
@cubie84168 жыл бұрын
+Godis I Bilen her own voice is clearly hearable in midst of it all, especially in the delay/reverb echoes. Besides there are a few singing note mistakes on this performance, if it was corrected, they wouldnt be there. Also the harmonies she plays only work if the singing note is in the correct key, because otherwise the intervals between the harmonizing notes is different and it instead forms a unharmonic chord, that happens on this perfomance a couple of times as well.
@JodiGilar7 жыл бұрын
go to 01:15 and tell me the split second of her out of tune voice is autotuned.. if the clarity of the wrong tune is high, then the voice was not manipulated..

Equal to Aerosmith-sweet emotion. Not auto tune at all.

See, this is an effect I can respect. Autotune is not.
@datpilk8 жыл бұрын
+Universe its the same effect. Just the usage is different. This is a vocoder just like Autotune! I bet you would like Bon Iver's use of Autotune. And if you like Bon Iver's use, then Kanye West's use is close at hand.
@CloudeAytr8 жыл бұрын
+datpilk it's similar but not the same. This is using the input (her singing) and the keyboard chords she's playing to create basically another instrument or synth.
@CloudeAytr8 жыл бұрын
She not only has to sing the song correctly and well (it doesn't correct or make up for mistakes in anyway) but she's also playing every chord that the vocoder outputs. And if she does sing slightly out the whole vocoder will play the chord incorrectly too. As she did for a second at 1:15. It's very different to auto-tune.
@mesamarshall32026 жыл бұрын
Vocoders do fix the pitch if she's off. What a vocoder doesn't fix is timing errors or incorrect notes played on the midi keyboard. The mess up you're hearing at 1:15 is fixed when her right index finger goes down and corrects the chord. That being said, she does have one channel on top of the vocoder that is just her natural voice. This is how you can tell she's actually singing.
