"It's the sustain! It's never done that before!" Imogen Heap breaks out of a captivating performance of a song written just three weeks ago for a piece of tech she's had to wait two-and-a-half years to get her hands on.
Covering Heap's hands, arms and back are a series of wires. Two LEDs blink on the back of her hands. She adjusts a setting on her computer and composes herself in the centre of the stage, eager to continue the performance. Despite the minor hitch, the Wired 2012 audience are still captivated by the award-winning musician -- if anything, the error only makes her passion for the new technology all the more obvious.
Heap told Wired 2012 that before she got her hands on her "magical gloves", she would make music with an array of instruments and virtual instruments, along with Albeton music software: "Basically, inside this software I can play virtual instruments and loop things, add layers and textures that I spend hours working on in my basement. But I wanted to bring those sounds on stage with me. I strapped keyboards onto me, had microphones attached to my wrists so that I can mic up wine glasses or guitars or whatever I wanted to record. The problem was, how could I do this on the move.

I'm forever going to be angry about the lack of recognition Imogen Heap has endured her entire career. She's the most incredible embodiment of art, she's always been on the cutting edge of musical composition, and she gets no credit for it. It's just not fair.

There are countless others just like her , true artists, that we will never know because these days, shitty pop music and art absolutely crowds and overshadows and saturated the world , covering up the REAL ones making REAL creative art. It sucks, but, you gotta realize, we’re way too used to celebrities. We think great artists deserve this super star status......that is the fallacy. That is not natural. Someone like Imogene.....people know who she is. One of her songs has millions of views and was sampled in popular songs. She makes a living, and a good one, doing what she does.....of course more people should know her, she’s not super famous or anything.....but 100%, she has “made it”.....if you can support yourself financially through your art....you e made it. think of al the other people out there being as creative as her, that literally NOONE knows or ever will. I think that’s the true tragedy. Someone like Imogene is doing better than you think. I think we have just gotten too used to these super stars and want real artists to have that status.....but that status is superficial and doesn’t really mesh well with a real artist anyway. At least that’s my opinion

Only the Avatar, master of sound bending, could stop them, but when the world needed her most, she vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, a soundbender named *Ariana* . And although her sound bending skills are great, she has a lot to learn before she's ready to save the live autotune bending industry. But I believe *Ariana* can save the music industry.

I’ll never forget one of the years I went to Coachella and IH was playing one of the smaller tents right around sunset. This was around 2010, right before Coachella REALLY popped off and started the two different weekends. Anyways, my friends were hungry and were going to get food. Just barely audible, I could hear her starting her set. I completely left my group and watched her entire set. Her was one woman putting on a show that sounded like it was being done by 15 people. All that was great but the thing that really stood out to me was how empty that tent was. And I kid you not, I got the feeling that IH was kind of annoyed by the audience… but even so she put on one of the most memorable performances of the weekend, which is saying something.

I think it's great that people ended up here, regardless of why. But that being said, it's a bit frustrating that Imogen and the team working on this have been developing it for years and years, and when it's finally finished, Ariana Grande puts a video online and suddenly I see headlines implying that Ariana has developed them or commissioned them. Really? It's great to get the word out (and i'm sure she's invested in them as much as she is allowed, because it's a great business decision), but I would be trying to give credit where credit is due.

I enjoy Imogen's performance more every time I watch this! True, this technology was barely out of the lab when she performed this, but her working around the glitches was amazing. I think this invention is amazing. Such a clear sound, quite interesting and captivating watching what feels like the creation of each melody in the song. Of course there are kinks with it still and everything's not perfect, but I feel as if I'm watching something be created in front of my eyes. Will also admit that this performance was not the best, but Imogen Heap's creativity and talent far out way that opinion of this one performance out of so many others in her ever expanding career. KeiyaValecourt Totally agree..she is pushing boundaries and I couldn't even think of a better fit for these gloves! You could tell that she wasn't satisfied after the performance, but I believe everybody in that audience was aware that they were a part of witnessing history in music & technological innovation. Seeing a part of the process is captivating in and of itself because most artists do not show this side of things (especially in America where they want everything perfect before they ever perform a new song). Not that there isn't anything wrong with a perfect performance, but there is something so authentic about the fact that Imogen had 5hrs to write this song before the first time she ever performed it. Imogen Heap's music carried me through some crazy difficult and lonely transitions and times in my life, even over a decade ago. To be watching her throw herself into such an incredibly HUGE project makes me feel like I have a lot of work to do when it comes to putting effort into the things I am passionate about (lol let alone figuring out what that is at this point in my life. Was acting and music, but now I have kids and work in a gym. Not what I imagined my future to be!) I think she not only moves people musically, but inspires people for life! She is one magnificient woman!

This is beyond genius and I'm seeing this for the first time, almost 10 years later... shows just how underappreciated and unrecognized this woman is. Shame on me. Shame on the entertainment industry. Shame on us. 🥺 I'm mindblown and upset. 😓

I'm American and I love the British, but you guys are so subdued. When she starts to demonstrate what the gloves can do-- it was silent. We would be flying off the handle because of the prospect.

How am I just discovering this beautiful performance now? Been a long time Immie fan, and her talent (and this track!) definitely deserves more recognition. I've always thought this song was perfect for GITS // SAC. Someone really needs to put her in touch with the producers of that show.
