I think phones avoid using moving parts on on purpose because they tend to get dropped more often than any other gadget. Less moving parts = more durability.

@@ChimeTsetanive been using my oneplus 7 pro for 4.5 years with no issues with the pop up camera. also i do not treat my phone well, and has been dropped tons of times. i think it didnt catch on because people were uneasy about having a pop up camera. but now i cant upgrade cause i cant go back to having a hole in the screen. i need the z fold for its underscreen camera but its too expensive.

The difference is that in this phone, Sony managed to cramp everything inside the phone. But in S4 zoom, it sticks out. Other brands like Asus and Nokia did the same in the past, but the camera bumps was enormous. Sony is the only brand to do this without making the camera bump taking 2 times the actual phone's thickness

They already have a X10 Optical Zoom lens using a dedicated telephoto lens. It’s like how camera photographers would swap lenses between shots, but it’s automatic. Since in a phone it would look silly and cumbersome having an actual moving zoom lens outside, Sony use mirrors to mimic a zooming lens inside. Much like a periscope but very small with a tinier sensor than a regular phone sensor.

You can understand by looking at the captured photos. Digitally zoomed images will have more pixelated blocks & lesser anti-alising than optically optical zoomed ones. Although differentiating it requires some practice, but it's still doable.

Use manual focus, set at object in closest distance, then zoom in. Object with digital zoom would still in focus, with optical zoom would be blurred

ive tested the main lens (on the newer 1 V) at the same zoom as the minimum on the optical, there is a difference, optical is better but the main sensor only puts out 12mp stills.

in its profesional video mode, you can select the 85mm-125mm lens, and optically zoom in. in the camera app, in BASIC mode, you can record video and optically zoom in up to 5.2x.

Nope,. They spend so much time with the hardware and left the processing behind.. and what you get is a very expensive camera phone that under performs. Its a camera savvy's wet dream phone but no camera savvy wants it, since they already have DSLRs for professional shots and an iphone to take quick photos to post online..

Dude technology has simply become dumber in recent years. S9 introduced var aperture I think. S9/S8 also had a cool 3D ToF sensor right beside the main camera. Now it's replaced with a simple dull 2d laser sensor.

Samsung uses that periscope but with dedicated 3 x optical and in between 2 x and 10 x it is more of digital zoom in between it does not slide over like sony... Fixed focal lens for samsung...

It does not do the same thing, only a fixed 3x and 10x lens, you crop in betweem 3x and 9.9x, same with 10 all the way to 100x. the Sony OPTICALLY zooms, moving glass lenses to continuously zoom in optically

@@mickfitz76 it's literally not. A regular periscope lens is just some glas which achieves a constant zoom level. This has actual moving parts inside the lens to achieve different zoom levels. It's not "same mechanics" at all.

That is how the periscope lens works on the S21/S22. I physically moves up to 10X after that it is digital.

Nope, its digitally zooming from its 3x to 10x, while on this xperia phone its optically zooming on its telephoto

Galaxy s22 and s23 ultra has the same feature, you can zoom and zoom and stop at any number between 0.6 and 100for example, you can scroll it the same way as this and stop at 10.7 or 20.3xand so on
