New to the game but I already did most of these except for tip 2 and was really helpful. Impressed with how you used paths to grade before converting it to roads. That was genius! Tip 4 was also cool. Didn't know you could do that to offset lanes for ramps. Once again genius method. Will retrofit these techniques on to my first city where possible.
@PauxloE

For tip 3 (smooth bridge gradients): I think you can reach that also "in one step", if you begin/end your bridge still in the air at both ends. I.e. build the first/last small step from ground to 1 step higher, then go from there.

I just built this last night, it took me over 4hrs to get right like you have but I learned alot about how lanes can merge into the nodes better. I didn't realize how many lanes can make a big difference and where the node is on how the transition looks. This tutorial video has taught me alot. I am now in the process of redoing my entire city now lol

Well this is really good , but how about an interchange in the city downtown? Like the NT-KDT-NX traffic knots in Vietnam ( NT-KDT-NX is Nguyen Trai-Khuat Duy Tien-Nguyen Xuyen and it’s like a heart of the city traffic here because it’s a combination of Metro line , Highway , underground road , bus stops and a huge crossroads arena .
@GavHTFC
@GavHTFC 2 жыл бұрын
Well now you've made me want to see someone recreate that junction!
@benanders4412
@benanders4412 2 жыл бұрын
Now that's a challenge. You probably have to redesign a huge area. Level multiple buildings.. Make traffic go around and only allow cyclist and pedestrians in the city center itself. Give cyclist, pedestrians and public transport priority over cars. Giving them the shortest rout. Car focused cities always seem to have these problems. They are often the worst places to drive a car. Having a highway in the middle of the city is often a horrible idea. Better to have a road around the city center with plenty exits. Dividing traffic before it hit's the center. Most of this traffic doesn't even need to be in the center of the city. They simply take the shortest rout to their destination. The solution is to make this traffic go around. You would have to remove the entire highway and replace it with bicycle lanes, pedestrian paths and public transport. Make it a central park area. Make car traffic go around the long way. This will increase the distance cars have to travel, but it will increase the average travel speed and flow. Decreasing travel time overall. And it would give people more incentive to travel on foot, public transport or bicycle, meaning less cars in general. It wouldn't be much of a problem in cities skylines. Doing it in a real city would however be a challenge. Many interest groups would try to stop a project like that. And you can't just pause the game while you're building. You would have to build the alternative rout first before you close off the old rout. It would make the traffic problems worse for a couple years while the project is in progress. Making plenty people very angry. Not to mention the costs would be enormous. In other words, the last thing you want is an interchange in the city downtown. You want multiple smaller interchanges around the city downtown.

I've seen the video of that interchange. It seems very chaotic. The only way to know what's the best is to investigate the flow of the traffic; where are they coming from and where are they going to. Sometimes dispersing the traffic (by giving more options--route, public transportation, bicycle lanes) is better than having a complicated interchange. This is only if the fastest way to reach many destinations is only by using that interchange through the heart of the cities. Well, many complex assumption such as car dependency, walkability, bikability, etc. should be added.

These are some good tips :D I noticed that, in this video, precision engineering was used (correct me if I'm wrong). Even if it was not used, you can find out where the break point in vanilla game is for the node creation and use the same method described in my post. Precision engineering can help you make nice slopes without using any other tool. I think I even learned this trick from you xD Distance between nodes is 12 (precision engineering) units. After 12, game adds another node and this can ruin your slope unless you use even more mods. What I do is create segments of 12 units and then change the elevation at the end. So, as an example, you have height difference of 6 and the slope length is 18 units. Build a segment of 12 units, change its elevation by 4, then add another segment of 6, and change its elevation by 2. I'm sorry, but math is necessary if you want nice looking slopes. This can be used even with a curved road, but be careful as total length of the segment cannot exceed 12 units. Tangents can trick you. This is how I build nice looking highway and pedestrian ramps.

This great and have seen it used often these days, but it is something for a wide open area interchange, clover leaf is still the best condensed interchange design for a dense area without large amount of soil disruption. As well dig tunnels and buildings shift, so not good for dense areas either, without large construction costs of fortifying footings.

To make a road/ramp go from any height to grond level i go to where the road (aprox) needs to end, a few nodes back (depends on the gradiënt) and instead of going to ground level, build it to 1 click high and then the last little piece is sometimes 1 or 2 tries to get it right.

4:36 I don't get it. Why not convert 2 one way roads into a one way road that connects to a highway? I know about Biffa's concept but it mostly applies to realistic lane switching on intersections. Merging highways is not an intercection in classic terms, more like merging 2 same priority roads

I've driven on a lot on major highways. Even for highways merging and ramps coming into highways you need lane mathematics IRL, especially in US cities and regions like L.A., Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, South Florida, and Northern Virginia.
@jk2l

IRL, a merge lane allow two traffic run in parallel with some buffer. This make both traffic easier to do merge as zip zap. One main benefit is both lane can see each other and adjust speed and provide space for merging.
