The Imperial Class Star Destroyers represented the apex of Imperial power. Over thousands of worlds these formidable ships deployed vast armies and starfighter squadrons, forming the backbone of the Galactic Empire.

If I could make a recommendation for the Arsenal videos? When talking about Ship/Vehicle compliments you should if possible display them with how many they would have carried. EX: in this video you mentioned the weapons carried by the Imperial class and it's fighter complement in the future I think it would be better to show the numbers on screen with an image of the weapon/fighter

In legends, the New Republic, GFFA, and Galactic Federation Triumvirate continued to use Star Destroyers and its various successor models for the next at least 150 years after the battle of Endor. They're too good of a ship to just abandon, especially in a galaxy that remains in chaos during the era of warlords, the Thrawn campaign, the Yuuzhan Vong war, and the Second Galactic Civil War. Of course, as you mentioned in your video "building your interstellar navy" the GFFA started calling them "battle carriers" for political reasons, avoiding the connotation that the Imperial Star Destroyer had. I love your videos, keep up the awesome work.

@igncom1
@igncom1 3 жыл бұрын
@@whee38 I've never really bought that. The transition away from big carriers like the venator was due to the ineffectual ability of strikecraft at the time. Republic venators had to rely on their own guns far more then should have been necessary. The ISD is the natural end point for creating a ship capable of defeating anything that the republic or separatists could field (super ships don't really count.) Of course with the development of the revolutionary multi-role starfighter, the x-wing, the domination of big battleships ended almost as soon as it began.

In Legends the Chimaera the flagship of both admiral Thrawn & Gilad Pellaeon survived the war & served the imperial remnant for decades afterward.. So it’s a safe bet that eventually it would be made into museum ship on the Imperial Capital of Bastion.. Can’t imagine a more notable ship for future imperials to fill them full of patriotism..
@pubcle
@pubcle 3 жыл бұрын
Most continued to serve for decades, in Legends its service lasted more than 60 years. The Imperial Star Destroyer was perhaps the most successful design in Star Wars history. There are some ships that survived a millennium such as the Invincible-class Dreadnought but only because of a complete disinterest in military advancement with almost no new designs being adopted and the almost total dissolution of a centralized military. The ISD survived as an active war vessel to be refit and brought up to standard through continuous conflict and combat. The ISD design was still used, though largely replaced by then, during the Sith-Imperial War and Second Imperial Civil War, over 150 years after the Battle of Yavin. It is almost certain several ISDs remained as museum pieces for the Fel Empire's reverence, symbols that were kept in the home fleet over Bastion, such as the Executrix, the first ISD developed with its first captain being Moff Tarkin, the earlier mentioned Chimaera, a flagship that had been captained by three different heads of the Imperial state and involved in more significant battles than perhaps any individual ship in Star Wars history, and likely there would be others though I'm not thinking of any surviving ones right now.

I suspect that was on purpose: not for the sake of the real-life audience, but from an in-universe perspective. A uniform by design is meant to encourage conformity and group mentality; the less human that uniform makes the wearer appear, the more they disconnect themselves from their identity when wearing it. This is especially true of any design that conceals the face; at that point the person behind the mask can dissociate themselves completely from not just their sense of self, but the limits of their conscience that come with it, making them capable of acts of terrible violence and inhumanity that they might have questioned or resisted otherwise. I think it's exactly the sort of thing the Empire would do to its own troops.

I always find it funny how in the movies, the ships in the clones wares made much more practical sense than most of the imperial star destroyers. The ISD is still probably the single most influential ship design in all of sci-fi, but it's unfortunate how little sense it makes for space combat. Still love it and would never replace it for anything XD
@darthcalanil5333
@darthcalanil5333 3 жыл бұрын
@@papapalps2415 not exactly sure where did you get the raging hard on idea from, since if anything, my hard on is for the ISD. But yeah, imo the Venator and Lucrehulk embrace the role of a carrier far better (even though the turbo laser batteries on the Venator are as silly as on the ISD), while the munificent works well as a long range gunship. I do have a soft spot for the providence but it reminds me of an 18th century ship of the line rather than a good scifi design. However its small profile is rather good to see on a capital ship. The main issue with the ISD is that it needs to be too many scifi things at once while being more or less inspired by 20th century naval ships. Like the bridge for example. Why on earth does it need such a huge glaring weak point? At least the Resurgent managed to make to design more streamlined. As the video eluded to several times, the confrontations that the ISD was supposedly designed for rarely happened, which means that more often than not it found itself handicapped in the hit and run fighter engagements because even though the fighter complement was kinda high enough, the hanger design meant that they launched only a few at a time, or needed to way a bit to launch enough fighters. I'm not saying that prequel ships are perfect (far from it) but it seems at least to me that the role they were designed for is fulfilled well

👍 At least a excellent comment NOT about the techs of ISD but what they are made for, how the are mean to be used to and also it logic place inside a sometime-illogical-universe. It's a very good strategic and historical view of the Star destroyers. Do not fear them for they are BIG, Fear them for what they represent : a mobile military base. -In terms of battle, I understand more why they are so under-armed and weak; It's not their role. -In terms of wars, they are a mobile fortress of operation NOT a battleship NOT a warship. Thks for casting all of these new lights.

So many people don't seem to realize that the design of a star destroyer allows the entire firepower of the ship to be focused on a single target. It is certainly capable of firing in numerous directions, however if it points it's nose at a target, it can open fire with it's full compliment of weapons, which in the true lore, legends, is very apparent. No other capital class ship was so effective at destroying other capital ships.
