Right from the start, before the war even broke out, Mogami's career started off badly. She would ultimately require three significant refits, which would cost millions and keep her out of commission for years. In addition to directly sinking five of her own ships, she rammed two heavy cruisers, resulting in their eventual sinking and becoming the victim of friendly fire herself. To round off her unfortunate career, her demise would be brought about by the detonation of four of her own torpedoes.

Not really. They wanted a war and they got one. It just didn't turn out the way they thought it would. And yes, this is hilarious.

And I thought the IJN Kumano had bad luck. Early in the war, while off Malaya her floatplane, which had been shadowing Force Z containing the battleships HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales, ran out of fuel and its crew was never recovered. During the Solomon Islands campaign, the cruiser was hit by Avenger torpedo bombers near her stern, though I believe it was a bomb hit. Later in the war, in and near the Philippines, Kumano's bow would be blown off three times and she would help get her fellow Mogami class cruiser, IJN Suzuya sunk. During the Battle off Samar on October 25, 1944, a torpedo from the U.S.S. Johnson blasted the Kumano's bow off. The cruiser Suzuya came alongside to render aid and was hit by bombs which blew one of her props off making that cruiser a sitting duck, while Kumano limped home. A couple of hours later a larger attack set off some off Suzuya's torpedoes and after that, no more Suzuya. The next day the Kumano was attacked by aircraft from the U.S.S. Hancock and was hit by three 500 lbs. bombs. She made port in Manilla and repairs were made giving Kumano a new bow. On November 6 Kumano was escorting a convoy from Manilla headed towards Taiwan when it was attacked by five U.S. Navy submarines. Torpedoes from the U.S.S. Ray tore off the Kumano's new bow but also severely damaged the ship which meant Kumano had to be towed back to port. On November 25 1944, while undergoing repairs in the port of Santa Cruz, the Kumano came under attack from planes from the U.S.S. Ticonderoga and once again another new bow was blown off. However, Kumano was hit with a total of four 500 lbs. bombs and five torpedoes which sent the Kumano to the bottom of the bay with almost 500 of her crew. She only sank in just over 100 ft. of water and her bow was 150 yds. away from the rest of the wreck which demonstrated that it came off at the surface. Adding insult to injury, in June 1945 U.S. Navy divers recovered code books from the Kumano's broken hull, wiring diagrams for Japanese radar sets and the deck logs of the Kumano from 1937 to 1942. American Admiral William "Bull" Halsey said of the enemy cruiser, "If there was Japanese ship I could feel sorry for at all, it would be the Kumano."

The US should have let her survive. She did more harm than good for the IJN.😂

The end of the battle was the last time battleships fired at battleships but it hardly a battleship "duel." Destroyers had twice torpedoed her earlier and set her ablaze. She was in a sinking condition by the time she met Oldendorf's battle line. She was on fire and shooting blind. She was shelled by only two of the USN BBs and in the end had to be re-torpedoed by a DD to put her down for good. If I remember correctly, ALL of the heavies sunk in WW2 went down to torpedoes, with some help from bombs, or like Graf Spee and Bismarck, we scuttled. Armor, it seems, was definitely 'ahead' of artillery.

For all the damage Mogami did to the IJN, it really should have been awarded a Presidential Unit Citation, or at least repeated mentions in the dispatches.

MOGAMI survived Midway because her engineering also her damage control officer ordered everything which might burn or explode jettisoned - ie float planes, aircraft bombs, gasoline, Her torpedo and their reloads were fired off Thus when the air attacks started their was nothing to burn MIKUMA did not Hits in her torpedo flat ignited the Long Lance torpedo kerosene fuel, touching off the warheads and sinking the ship

The image of IJN Mikuma at 4.49 appears to show the wreckage of Captain Richard Flemings bomber on the roof of turret 4. Also, something is hanging out of the side of one of the torpedo bays...a long lance maybe?

Far from it, the Japanese navy named their newest class of ships, a stealth frigate, the Mogami class. The lead ship, JMSDF Mogami, entered service a year ago, and their have been other ships named Mogami since WW2.

The Japanese navy dreamed of a short-term decisive battle and a short-term peace with the United States and destroyed itself. It's true because I'm Japanese. In addition, the Imperial Japanese Navy plunged into war with Great Britain and the United States on its own without coordinating opinions with the Army. If the Japanese at that time had wisdom, there was a way to fight the United States more favorably. And it is also true that there were more than a few military personnel and civilians who envisioned such a plan.

Torpedoes "tearing apart" Fuso is sort of a vague and subjective statement. Since he didn't specify that the hull was broken into seperate pieces, "tearing apart" could be construed as just inflicting major damage, an example of hyperbole more than a specific description.
