I believe they said one of the goals with Traders was to provide more and different kinds of nteraction. You don't mention whether you tried it in multiplayer or only in solo?

@@MichaelDart Actually I mentioned its solo. Imperium is not a game anyone should play multiplayer (bar two player which is essentially solo plus bot) and the vast majority don't.

This is one game that would be great as an App. No setup, no shuffling and no scoring endgame points.

I know I'm on the outside with this, but both my Wife and I had no problems with the OG rulebook. We are both in the research industry; I found it was written similarly to something we both read on a daily basis, so that is likely the reason, lol. Very much looking forward to IH since I heard about it last year. It's such a clever game. Glad to see it is, largly, more of the same greatness. In regard to the price, I found it on-par with something like FFGs newer LCG card bundle expansions. It didn't feel outside the norm IMO, but at least this is new content, lol.

I'm looking forward to this one! I think the use of civilizations that aren't necessarily household names is fantastic. Chanakya (a Mauryan) turned up in the crossword the other day (nailed it thanks to Imperium) and I know what a shaduf is now. Every game is fun and a history lesson.

Thanks for the coverage! I was hoping that everything would be a whole lot better than the smaller boxes and had a small hope that the box would be formatted in such a way that I could store everything in one box. I'm sure I can remove the insert and do so. Still have a ton to experience in Classics and Legends and will likely wait to pick up Horizons until it comes across on a really great sell with my favorite OLGS options. The one thing your review did was encourage me to dive back into the content I already have on hand.

I always appreciate your honest thoughts on games. That said, this is really an expansion on Classics and Legends. It appears to be made for serious fans of the game (like me, as a solo player). Sure, it isn’t perfect, however I easily overlook it’s faults because I find the gameplay to be worth it - exploring varied strategies with each civilization and competing against a wide range of opponents, all while being able to scale the difficulty. Already the two base boxes have provided immense replayability and Horizons adds much, much more. I look forward to trying out the practice mode and, eventually, trading.

If it was only intended as an expansion they wouldn't have put player tokens and a brand new rulebook explaining the core elements of the game in it.

Nice review!! I'm really looking forward for this one! Classics/Legends are at least in my top 3 games, I love how the gameplay and theme are so well together here. Sad to hear that some problems were not solved. Unfortunately I'll have to wait more than a year due to the game being so heavily based on language, so when it launches in portuguese I'll get my copy.

Funny you mentioned the Magyars (or whatever it's spelled). The way to say "Hungary" in Hungarian is "Magyar". The designer (Turczi) is Hungarian, so he just added the tribe / cast / civilization that became today's Hungarian folk. It's as if they had included the Franks to represent modern-day France, or Anglo-Saxons to represent today's England.

Originally it was meant to be 2 differnt expansions. It was the publisher's choice to add the modular expansion in with the new decks expansion. Cost saving if you want both but not if you only wanted new decks. Cards are the most expensive thing in a board game. Cost criticism seems a bit off. By publisheres prices. A deck is 6$ per in Classics/Legends. In horizons its 5.7$ per. Which means cheaper... oops?

Can't wait for this! Imperium Classics/Legends is #8 of my top 100 of all time. I mostly play it solo, so it's gonna be challenging with 14 new civs to test.

I'm excited to dive into this one! Hopefully the solo cards are printed in such a way that you could store them in their relevant boxes. This would help with how tight they fit in the Horizons box!

So excited for this one--glad you enjoyed it! As for the rulebook, I will say that they fixed the Classics/Legends errors in subsequent printings (which my boxes thankfully have), so the rulebooks in current printings are not as big of a hurdle as when those games first released.

The test mode sounds great. I would maybe play a faction 2-3 times in that mode until I understand the specific gameplay, and then I'm ready for playing against a bot directly on a higher difficulty. Feels like saving time while learning the factions. I was hoping for something that increases the interaction so that it's worth playing e.g. with three players. Is there anything like that or at least factions that are more aggressive or interactive in any way?

The trade module does a bit of that with the "profit" mechanics but not enough to suddenly make it more interactive by that much.

I managed to fit both Legends and Classics in one Box, sleeved with card dividers. It's still tight but I can imagine with the bigger box, there will be some breathing room. Suffice to say, the tokens are in small storage containers next to it on the shelf.

The biggest thing that turned me off of the previous iteration was an Osprey specialty: game breaking rules errors printed on solo components and needing massive day 1 errata to actually play the solo mode. They massacred the Undaunted solo mode with those too. Have there been any of those this time?

Could you comment on the trade module effecting the multiplayer aspect of the game? I thought I read that the idea was to make the game have some more player interaction to make it better to play at 2-3 players (I don't think anyone is playing this at 4 so I'm not going to suggest otherwise lol). I'm assuming you haven't tried it out at that player count given you said you prefer this solo, but would love to hear your thoughts if you get the chance.

I only play this game at solo. Playing this game at 3-4 players is pointless. It's way too long, too drawn out and the trade module isn't enough to add a reason to do so. You get a little bit of basic interaction with triggering some card effects, but that's it. Imperium is at its core, a solo game.

I've played over a hundred games of Imperium and only ever multiplayer. The trade route expansion increases the player interaction between players and in a positive way. It creates a little bit of a positive feedback loop but also a good strategic puzzle of when and if you should play, use and use your opponents trade routes. I have played 4 player Imperium quite a few times, and yes it is longer but with Trade Routes you can get each player around the table giving you a trade good and by your next turn you gain a reward that can bump you along. 3 player with trade routes and multiple trader civs is lots of fun.

It probably wound have been helpful to qualify in the review that you didn't play it multiplayer then for context. It's still a useful criticism on the solo but it's only half the story.

Was definitely thinking of getting this one as I enjoy the other two but now that you can't play 6 of the factions unless you add in the expansion module I'm not so sure how tempted I am to buy it.

I bought Legends on the cheap but wish it was Classics. I'm intimidated with learning and playing it solo from the rulebook and Paul's video(s) with all the asymmetry and no one who knows it nearby. I really want to get into it and I know a lot of people say it's a great solo game.

It's basically solo only really. The new box's Practice mode though will help you nicely. Legends has some fiddly factions in it for new players. If you can look at the Imperium Horizons rulebook online and learn from that, and then just do a practice mode, that's your best bet.

Some people apparently don't consider storage issues, price value, component quality, expansion modules or rulebook clarity or game length as important in reviews. I know some perfect titles for them if basic essentials aren't necessary in a game product. Reviews are not strategy guides for factions. You would need a 90-120 minute video to do that and frankly i don't care about the strategic elements of a game when considering a purchase. Would you buy a space 4X game that had a ton of aliens with really interesting player powers if the rules were so complicated and unwieldy that you couldn't physically play it?

When it comes to price value, I feel like we’re getting just as much art as perhaps all 3 West Kingdom games combined (same artist). That seems like nice value! Also, I was recently looking at the price of some of the Arkham Horror products, which have similar types of components, and this box seems more favorably priced. But perhaps you’re comparing to SotM, which is more aggressively priced, for sure 😊 Thanks for posting the review! Fans of the game have been waiting so long for video content!

I got rid of both my imperium games, it was just tooooooo looooooong a game. Outstayed its welcome as a game. And adding up scores at the end was a CHORE!

I gave Classics a few tries but I honestly I'm too stupid for this system. Had no issues with Voidfall but this one did not click for me. I genuinely don't understand what the game flow is. Therefor I can't appreciate how the civs twist the formula. I can say I was confused 100% of the time. Unrest comes on, is garrisoned, comes off, comes on. I wanted to like, wanted to love it but looks like I need someone to explain it to me like I'm 5

You're right the publishing strategy of this games is kinda wild and chaotic. I like this game so much but there are so many hurdles to get it to the table. It could use a bit more streamlining. Its abstract (its a card game at the end of the day). It tends to overstay its welcome. It only is fun to play with 3P and all players should've played the game a couple of times before. :sigh:

19:48 I’d imagine the money went into design, development, play testing. Sometimes, double the content should mean double the price. We have to appreciate the work that goes into a game, not just the components.

I was coming here to comment on this as well, but I think you nailed it. But also, at the end of the day whether you want to play those Trade factions or not, there’s still significantly more content in this box than in previous ones. So why shouldn’t it cost more?

And how much £ value do you put on that? And where would you draw the line. Everdell Farshore was $90 and I'll bet that didn't have as much testing.

Yeah this was one of the worst bits of the review (which overall was quite good). We have to get away from thinking about the value as primarily the cost of the components. The amount of design time and playtesting that went into this must be massive. And the replayability in the box may justify it if the first two boxes are anything to go by. (I don't own it yet)

Honestly I think having some decks that work around the new trade module seems wanted when it's a deck builder. No harm in that. What does bother me is the crappy insert, pardon my french. Osprey is notorious for that and not learning from previous mistakes. I own all Undaunted titles and they pretty much force you to throw away the inserts when you want to play with sleeves.

Note that the sleeved cards that didn't fit in the Imperium Classics/Legends inserts do fit nicely in the Imperium Horizons inserts for me 🙂

I thought this was a good, detailed review that will help a lot of people. But a lot of the criticisms seem to loom larger for you than they would for me. People should go into this game prepared for a slow start, but the game justifies it for me. At least the first two did.

Only a nerd can get this comparison. 13:30, the symbol looks like the Martian Manhunters face. I would say that with the Avengers many of the heroes have become household names, but not the Martian Manhunter.

This is such a weird one to comment. I think I am more on the negative side of this game than on the positive. The set up was too much. And then initially I thought each faction works differently and they all kind of linked to the way they behave in history, I was like cool! But then after trying a few factions I feel this actually restricted the way you play the game. If you are romans there is literally just one way to play the Romans. I just laughed when you talked about the inserts. They are terrible even for the original base game. That thing looked so flashy but ends up it didn’t function as well as they should have

It is likely the definition of a cult game, right down to the rulebook being an initiation rite. I say this with Imperium currently being my full day solo Civ game and with lunacy of thinking this one is a likely get.

So, when you said “new people,” are you meaning new to the boardgame hobby or those who have been steeped in it for years and have 100+ games, but who haven’t yet gotten into this system? I stopped watching at 9:45. Too much unnecessary nitpicking, whereas I am interested in how the new civilizations and trade mechanic play.

Hmmm, so storage issues, component quality, game length, and rulebook clarity are unimportant in games are they? Especially when considering this is the third iteration of a game that should be avoiding those issues. This is why publishers take shortcuts. I know some perfect games for you in that instance, I'll get on the blower to Splotter. Also the trade mechanic is discussed in the video, it's ok but not particularly great and is very much a take it or leave it affair. Also there are 14 civs, you would need a 90min long video just to cover those in any kind of detail. I'm sure someone down the line will do some big strategy video for all civs but that's not what people needing to watch their spending need to know. As for how the civs play, what use is that? If you are interested in the game or already play it then unless the civs are phenomenally boring, you're going to enjoy using them. You can give me weird and funky assymmetric player powers but if the game itself is dull, what does it matter?

Ouch. $80 retail?? Why is the box twice as large? Double price and double box size makes it a no go for me. Played the first game once and it just went on and on and on and my wife actually passed out. Ugh. Half the weight of the box devoted to solo cards. I’m getting sick of games that just focus on solo. whatever happened to playing games with other people? Has this gone out of style? Every game I buy now has got a large bag of useless solo stuff in a bag that I will never get to use. Then throw in the parts for the third and fourth player which we also will never use and that’s about 3 pounds of excess in one game box. 2 player only games are now going the way of the dodo. On the bright side, more money saved.

The box is twice as large and nearly twice the price because it has twice the content 🙂. There are many games out there that play best multiplayer - but there are also many people who enjoy solo games and so I think it's nice that games like Imperium exists. Many find that it does indeed work well as a 2 player game too. Imperium fans will also likely admit to getting far more value out of this game than many others they've played. If it's not your cup of tea, that's ok! Like you said, more money saved!

The game only has a dice and 5 tokens for solo? And the rulebook. Oh, I see. Ya, horizons has the deck of solo cards. I find this game way more fun at 2 or 3 players! But I can see the game taking forever, especially for beginner players since one doesn't really know how to achieve win conditions quickly.

I don't mind the solo aspect given the game might as well be a solo only game. But yeah the length is the biggest killer for it for many people.
