I can say, without any sense of hyperbole, that Imperium is one of the greatest cards games ever made along with being one of the best games ever made. And Horizons appears to be doing everything in its power to not just keep that true, but even add to the truthfulness of the statement. It's the absolute definition of the 'it's worth the effort' type of game, and it's worth that effort about ten or more times over even before you fold Horizons into it. And that's all before even considering the solitaire side of things. Each unique faction is also a unique opponent for your to play against in solo. With Horizons are coming something the wonderful community had been so kindly to provide us, and that's a rule card for all of the factions so that we could bypass flipping around a rulebook while we played. Horizons on a whole seems to be a love letter to these fantastic games, focused on giving us some much quality of life. I absolutely cannot wait for next week. And I don't think I could ever properly recommend or gush about the game enough, especially if you also spend time gaming on your own.

Such a rich game that deserves much more success and recognition. The ‘chemical reactions’ from the asymmetrical civs provide so much depth. And like you said, one of the very best solitaire modes I’ve ever seen.

Your review looks like what I would say. Honestly I thought, “OMG, is this one of my hyperbolic drunken reviews?!” This game design is absolutely incredible.

I had Classics on my 'To Sell' list as I just couldn't understand it, after seeing the last two playthroughs I have picked up Horizons and Legends. I think the easy learning mode will be a huge boon to this game. I have only seen the two different factions which were in this video but they seem to play completely differently, if all factions are like this the work that has been put into them is immense. Sometimes I think as consumers we zoom in on a few niggles with every game rather than appreciate just how much talent and work goes into designing them. Great work by both of you in this one.

I've ordered this game after watching the playthrough. The mechanics are similar to a number of games, but the number of decks and asymetric factions will make every game different. I know that our group will enjoy it. My local game store has the first 2 games in the series in stock, and I'm going to grab them as well.

Till this day I am still trying to defeat the macedonian-bot with the romans on "normal" difficulty. So far I didn't even really come close... It always wipes the floor with me. I'm beginning to think that with some combinations a win is nearly impossible. This was a great playthrough, as usual! Your first playthrough of Imperium Classics made me buy a copy of it and I am still enjoying it (even if I don't win). Also got Legends and now I am backing the language version of Horizons including the playmat for solo.

Love the art and concept of this game and always enjoy your teaching. Friendly grammar note regarding Inuit: In Inuktitut, the noun “Inuit” is plural in form and refers to several persons. Therefore, it remains invariable in English, and an “s” should not be added to the end of the word to pluralize it.

Speaking to your comment on the number of factions currently in the game with all three boxes: I am one of those players who would be more than comfortable with that number doubling. I love the idea of this game, the mechanics of it, the art adorning it. It's marvelous with human players or bots. Definitely one of those you cannot get enough of.

Anyone knows - when playing Japan you have a few cards in your deck that are Unrest cards. When I revolt with cards that some came from the Japan deck, and some from the Unrest deck - do all cards go back to the unrest deck? Or in that situation the Unrest cards that originally came from the Japan deck go to the discard pile instead?

All returned unrest goes to the common unrest pile - see return a {Unrest} on page 39 of the rules.

@24:48 Doesnt "break through" mean you either get the faceup card from the market or the FIRST card of the chosen type from the facedown pile (for the main pile it means the first card of the chosen type you draw)? So you can't really go for a specific card if it is somewhere in the facedown pile, right?
@nigelbuckle3759
@nigelbuckle3759 5 ай бұрын
You go to the main deck if the small deck is empty, or the type isn't in a small deck (Tributary or Trade Route), then you'll flip through to find the first applicable one.

I owned classics. Gave it up after one game. Plays very long, and end scoring is too complicated. I like the theme, but I just went back to ‘nations’ and that is so much smoother. I don’t think any civilization game in last 12 years has improved on ‘nations’.
@LordoftheBoard
@LordoftheBoard 5 ай бұрын
One game means you were likely learning and doing rule checks, and figuring out your faction, so of course it’ll play long. The more you play the faster it gets. There are also rules to make the game shorter. I would have given it a better chance before bailing on it as to me it is one of the best deckbuilding / civ building games I’ve ever played period. But to each their own.

Also there’s a web-based app which may also use your phone camera to take pictures of cards at the end of the game to score them correctly. Plus there’s a shorter variant in this set, so when you eventually get comfortable with the main game mechanisms, the game will not take that long

Not sure what the appeal of this game is. Seems like its a game of pick a faction and do what they want you to do until there's a point where you think you can win. And even then doesn't seem like you have much control over how the game ends. If someone could explain.

Plus each faction can do multiple things well, and combine those with different market cards they pick up each game... Ask people who are well into the 3 digit plays, they'll tell you that the game is not railroaded.
