Wild native plants are awesome food sources and is good while it lasts, but unfortunately its gone at a first frost. Its brown and dead during most of the November/December deer season.

Agreed. But it is a tremendous benefit (and what deer are naturally looking for to eat) during the growing season for whitetails. It also produces ideal brooding cover for quail, turkey and other birds during the nesting season which is another added benefit!

Great info! qu: you mentioned discing/ground disturbance in the fall/winter will help, if i'm doing this in fallow areas where fescue has taken over, what would be my best course of action? would disking do the job, or would an application of Glyphosate be needed before or after? i've heard october can be a good time to kill fescue without hurting natives dead from frost. Any suggestions appreciated! (i'm in central missouri btw) TIA!

You can use either application or a combination of both! The key thing to remember is that disturbing or spraying in the fall, your response will be forbs. If you disturb or spray in the spring, it will be grasses.

@@Whitetail_Properties when would you recommend discing or spraying to get forbes to grow in Georgia? How long would it be before plants emerge? If you did both would it eliminate the grasses? I have a small plot I would like to try it on . Been searching for a way to provide natural food for wildlife. Seems like I have heard the same thing about prescribed burns. Different plants emerge depending on which time of year you do them. Thanks.
