Implications of Europe's Deforestation Law: To Save Forests Or Save Jobs? | CNA Correspondent

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that 420 million hectares of forest - an area larger than the European Union - were converted to agricultural use between 1990 and 2020. EU consumption makes up around 10% of this global deforestation. Now, the EU wants to stop the trend to support its fight against climate change, and it has introduced a new law obliging companies to ensure that products sold in the EU have not led to deforestation and forest degradation. The move is seen as discriminatory by both Malaysia and Indonesia, the world’s top two palm oil exporting countries, as it'll hit their economies hard.
Elsewhere, farmers and exporters in Vietnam say it'll be difficult to provide verifiable proof of products coming from sustainable sources. CNA Correspondent explores how the livelihoods of millions could be affected by the new law.

Paraphrase this law: "If you have lands, keep them 'as-is'. Don't touch them for production purpose. Otherwise, you'll be labeled as destroying natural environment. How you develop further from here (to escape poverty), is none of our business".

Not aiming to defend this law, but do you really think large scale deforestation is improving people's lives? People on Borneo are generally not very supportive of the palm oil and timber industries because they profit very little from them. In Malaysia GDP per capita has barely increased in the last 10 years, instead people experiencing water scarcity and respiratory diseases. The people who call that development are the politicians who are constantly forced out of office due to their incompetence and corruption.

The wealth generated by production does not increase by increasing supply, but by increasing demand. If you allow expansion of production, this mainly ensures that competition increases and the value of palm oil and the like decreases, so that producers earn just as little. Moreover, rich, large companies can expand more than poor, small companies, so that allowing expansion ultimately disadvantages poor, small companies, because it mainly creates more competition for them in the market.

There's only 39% left forested land area in EU, while Indonesia still have 64% forested land and Malaysia 54% forested land. (Source: European Parliament, WWF) But EU trying to tell Indonesia and Malaysia about defortation?? What a joke! 😂 And if we talk about biodiversity impact, there’s 36 extinct species in Europe (within 20th - 21th centuries) and more than 1,677 endangered to extinct species in Europe. While in Indonesia, there’s only 4 extinct species (within 20th - 21th centuries) and about 223 endangered species. (Source: European Parliament; Rainforest Mongabay; Convention of Biological Diversity) Conclusion: 1) The European should stop being hypocrites, and start to take care their own forest. Because the European forest is the worst in this planet. 2) The European should not try to teach Indonesian and Malaysia how to take care their own forest, they should learn from Indonesian or Malaysian instead. 3) The European (including ALL COUNTRIES) should return minimum 50% of their lands to become forest again, and stop putting the burden to Indonesian while European people can keep destroying their forest as their like. Because forest issue is not Indonesian responsibility only, it's global issue, and all countries responsibility.

China🇨🇳 has been doing deforestation and water diversion for decades. - This EU law will affect both Vietnamese and Chinese exports. However, the EU rules on forced labor affect China the most.

Mehhh,they just want to boost sells their own oils. Canola,corn,sunflower,olive etc. Palm oil more versatile and produce more oil per hectar. They hate it they can't grow it there 😂

Rapeseed and sunflower oils are still the cheapest here in the market. Even thought the prices got hit and rose, because Ukraine is number one in producing sunflower oil and 4th in rapeseed oil in the whole world. But yes, we have freedom to choose what to buy and from whom to buy and no one can impose it.

Who cares? Indonesian domestic market is huge enough to absorb our own palm oil products, we have been using palm oil to make biodiesel, and researching to make avtur of it. Also Timor Leste, India, China, S. Korea, Japan are still willing to take them.

The EU is simply saying they won't buy products of new deforestation. I think that's reasonable. Also, this doesn't disadvantage small businesses. Lee announced the rebranding of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, renaming it the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE). PM Lee had said at that time that the rationale behind the change of name was to highlight that “sustainability had become an increasingly important part of our national agenda”. It has been barely 6 months since that name change. Is it not too soon to seemingly renege on your commitment to sustainability by potentially destroying a beautiful green space (according to an environmental baseline study) that is rich in both history and nature?

And they seem to be regretting it. So they are doing anything in their power to reverse their mistake. Isn’t that a good thing? What you are saying that if countries screw up over a century ago before understanding via scientific research that they were wrong this means that other countries which are now armed with the same knowledge can continue to go down the wrong path?

@munster1404 still they have been benefiting from the industries that they have been doing many centuries ago. After they now become rich from the long standing industries and finally realized the side effects of industrialization, especially the side effects of growing industries outside their area. They now try to hinder other countries who just started to benefit from their growing industries. This is to me unfair.

I also not completely agree with palm oil, but what is the alternative solution for absorbing workers, Europe can only ban it without a solution as if they own all the forests in this world

It is not only about workers. But it is also about deforestation itself. Oil palm produces 5 to 10 times more oil than other oil crops on the same size of land. If palm oil is banned, we need to clear 5 to 10 times more land area to replace oil palm.
