From the last month or so, workers have been trying to remove and cut away the dense reed beds in doddanekkundi lake. They had orders from BBMP officers. There seems to be a lack of awareness among BBMP of the rich biodiversity these plants harbour. Some species of birds like bitterns, streaked weavers, clamorous reed warbler are almost exclusively dependant on reeds. Birds like crakes, herons, kingfishers, munias, prinias, snipes and many smaller birds find food and nesting space amongst reeds and swamps around them. This purple heron family and many other birdnesting here.s have begun here. Lot of wintering warblers and crakes too prefer dense reeds. We managed to halt the "jungle clearance/ reed chopping by BBMP", what really hurts is the reasons given by officers, they say the reeds coming in the way of water flow? What about the hectares of invasive water hyacinth in Bangalore lakes then? The reed removal seems to be serving only a purpsoe of show, a tick mark of sorts and proof that some work got done towards "development of the lake". Long term ecological care and awareness is needed from BBMP officers, if even certain spaces in a BBMP lake are developed with ecological considerations, Bangalore would have more birds.
