From what I've heard, the difference in size between the bills is so that blind people can tell the difference between them. Same goes for coins that differ not only in size but also in the pattern on the side of the coin.

When it comes to the daylight I really love that as a swede. Our summers are the best in the world according to me! .. ;) The reason why is because the days never ends and also it's pretty warm outside. It's not to warm, but it's not to cold either. It's just perfect! That combined with the daylight makes it the best. I think the best time of year is spring/summer. But especially the spring, it's so nice since everything comes to life. May/June are really amazing months. And actually it's much greener here than further south. If you look at Spain, Italy and Greece for example they don't have green grass. The grass is more brown because the sun is to strong. Also they don't have as much trees, bushes and stuff because the climate is to hot, so it's hard for anything to grow. Here it's a jungle in the spring/summer! Also, all the nice flowers that grows and comes to life in the spring/summer are really nice. I think you will be in for a chock this spring because it will be such an evident change in the season very soon when we go from winter to spring and then later to summer. And it will happen fast, trust me. Once you have been here one full year you will understand how much the seasons really change. It's a very nice period that we have ahead in the next coming months! .. ;)

I'd say good waitresses and waiters here in Sweden pick up on the signals of their customers like if you put fork and knife together tilted to I think it's the right side almost everywhere I have eaten they will come and take the plate away and then ask wether we want the dessert menu and then we usually either order dessert or ask for the bill.

In Sweden it rude for the waitress to intrude. If you're in a fancier place they will show you to your table and hand you a menu but you have to call them when you've decided. I can't think of anything more obnoxious than a waitress coming over ever 5 minutes asking if I've decided. If I had, she would KNOW cuz I'd wave her over. Swedes like their personal space, not that we can't be intimate or close but it has to be on mutual conditions. The waitress not being all over you is a sign of respect, not the other way around. They know you're and adult and that you can handle yourself so if you want or need something, you will let them know. Hanging over you like a kindergarten teacher, asking you redundant questions, is patronizing.

I like that the service is not as in your face here in Sweden. I've never neen to America, but from what I've heard I don't think I would like the restaurant experience very much haha I think most of us who has lived here all our lives feel a bit down during the darker months, we have just learned how to live with it. It's so funny that what is considered good service in the US is considered pushy and invasive in Sweden (aka bad service), and vice versa. A lot of people, me included, choose not to use the self checkout register. The self checkout serves as a way for the store to fire people (since there’s “no need” for them) and cut the salary for those who get to stay employed (the employer “doing you a favour” by letting you stay, with reduced salary). So nah, that doesn’t fly at all.

I really enjoy watching your videos, it's an inspiration to hear about your stories and experiences and I'm very happy to have found your channel. Personally I think the weather we got is something Swedes have really tried to utilize. I feel like its common to plan for your favorite plants in your garden and projects as it gets darker, and to really watch it come to life in spring - summertime, as well as a high boost as a society when everyone is outside again. I also think people value autumn and the other seasons more as a novelty bc it's missed when its gone :) I really love listening to your clever way of listing differences between our countries and I hope you and your boyfriend are having a good time

Sweden is much longer than you think. Västerås is nowhere close to the middle of Sweden. It is like on the southern border of the middle third. The difference between Västerås and Umeå (that is in the northern part of the middle third) is hugh. I moved down to Enköping 11 years ago and I still get shocked every summer that its so dark in the summer nights down here. If you go to the northenmost part of Sweden, there are actually midnight sun. In Kiruna (northenmost "big" town of Sweden) the sun rises on 00:56 on May 27 and does not set until 01:01 in the middle of the night on July 17th (and then it rises again 17 min later).

It can be a good idea to read swedish roadlaws so you don't end up in an accident. Talk to a driving school and they surerly can sell you swedish driving book. Good luck in your new country!

One thing that struck me as odd when I moved from Sweden to the US was that in the US the seasons starts at a given date, like someone just decided when summer starts. In Sweden there are criteria about what the weather is doing that switches from one season to the next. This once led Sweden to have three seasons at once ...

I've lived in Sweden most of my life but I did live in the US for about 8 months as I was working there at the time. I think the service thing in the US, to me, was so transparent. I knew in the back of my head all the time that people were nice because they wanted a better tip. It took away a lot for me and sometimes they were being abrasive about it even though I never *ever* tipped less than 20%, mostly more honestly. They might be like that a bit more towards people they know are from other parts of the world/tourists, I'm not sure. But it was not pleasant. I would prefer having to deal less with that type of thing and knowing I don't have to tip and that they can make their way without my assistance beyond just being a customer. There were other things I loved about the US more though, when it wasn't someone that wanted tip and was nice, talking to strangers is a much more pleasant experience in the US, enjoyed it a lot. Women and men just coming up and casually talk was a really nice change of pace for someone who's used to how Swedish people are.

If you lived here you would get used to it. They’re not begging for the tips, the way they act is just providing what we consider attentive and prompt service. It makes us uncomfortable as well sometimes to basically decide someone’s pay. It’s not always the best system but it’s how it’s done in the US. When I lived in Europe it was an adjustment to get used to slower service. But I appreciated the positive side of it, and understood I shouldn’t go out to eat if I had limited time.

The turning right thing. Most times in the US if the traffic light is installed BEHIND the crossing road you can turn right. Most setups are like that in the US I find. In Germany and Sweden probably too. The traffic light is put before the crossing (like in line with your hood if you’re no. 1 in line. So the signal applies to you. Also there’s a difference between the illuminated and the metal green arrow. The green one you’re good to go. No bikes are allowed to pass you and no crossing traffic will be there, as they all have red signals. But if it’s a metal arrow, everybody else is allowed to go and you can only go when there‘s nobody coming. It’s designed to let you drive in case traffic is slow to not let you wait for nothing.

The liquor store HAS to take cash. Every state owned store or institution has to. It's in the law, they can't refuse the official currency of the nation. Private places can choose. Most places does tho cuz it's a lost customer otherwise. The places that don't is normally in major cities where there are enough customers and the zeitgeist is strong enough to not make it worth the hassle.

To add my take on the whole service in stores topic. To me this is connected to our individualism and independence. If I walk into a store here in Sweden I want the option of just looking around on my own. I am able to look around on my own without help and if I do want assistance and/or advice then I can ask for it. Regarding driving in the fast lane it's part of basic driving curtesies which are being taught when you take your license. You are supposed to stay ion the rightmost lane unless you are trying to pass.

In Sweden, they do not want staff in the store at all, but they want you to shop automatically, you scan the goods for everything and when you are done, you get a sum that you pay in a vending machine. The problem is that we do not need workers at all. We have companies in Sweden that do not have workers at all.

Driving. We have laws here that if someone put on the flash light and want to get in your lane in front of you you must make room for that. You also have to stay as far behind the car in front of you so you can stop if that one brakes hard. On roads with many lanes you must always drive in the right lane and only use the other lanes to drive past a slow driver and then go back to the right. I know a lot don't do that but the law say that. In the north of Sweden north of the polar circle the sun is gone for about a month in the winter but on the other hand there are sun 24/7 for a month in the summer unless it's raining.

Thanks.. I think you get in to our mindset/habits realy fast. And I dont say that its the best in the world, its juste how it works in Sweden. Then to tiping, one only tip taxidrivers and table serving waiters.. and its not like tiping in US, its more like "keep the change" culture! I think that religion have another purpose in US, kinda be a member of a social club, there one meet the same people like one self? One can do this in Sweden to if one is a nerd on religion! Soo, mayby you then understand our hype on winter sports like hockey/bandy/skating/skiing.. and at sumer its about soccer/field sports? And now you need to learn another thing, in winter we are kind of in a social hibernate mood, in spring it changes real fast and peaks in July, its a busy social meeting time when one shall do all the meetings to relatives/friends/make new friends/have some gatherings by neighbours.. its a busy time.. you dont want to miss out, becuse then one have to wait for next year! Ask your swedish friends about "midsummer festival", its kind of as importante as cristmas, but outdoors and often more public and social!

Actually, Starbucks came too late to Sweden. And we are also very peculiar about our coffe here. We already had several (good) nation-wide chains and on top of that you can get a good cup of coffe practically enywhere in the country. So once Starbucks came here, they didn't really add anything except even higher prices. So I believe they changed strategy completely for Sweden and basically only sell through one of the the gas-station chains. Which I am very grateful for, since it's actually the best coffe you can get at a gas station! So, they ultimately found their niche in Sweden :)

You don't need to know the language to get a work Visa. In Sweden, we even have "Internationella Engelska Skolan" which is a very popular private school where English is the first language. And therefore, you can work there as a teacher only knowing English. If you want to work in healthcare, the language is much more important. Other jobs that usually uses English as the work language is within IT and engineering.

Someone may have a question or two about the food. They hand in the order and then bring it out when it's ready. It's not rocket signs or back breaking labour. They reason the Americans are so friendly because they are basically begging for a tip. It's so cringy its pathic.

I think you sort of switched one thing around a little. :) Pressure of religion. If you say you are religious in Sweden, you would most likely get some weird looks. People wondering what's the deal there. :) And if you are more than very mildly religious, people would pity you..

Yes, the big pressure is not to be religious or not but to not talk about it. In Sweden regards to religion people can be spilt into three groups: 1- Not religious 2- Religious but keep it private 3- Freaks

@@IlyssaAlvarez The Swedish state church used to be extremely fundamentalists. They went to every home and had literal exams with people to make sure everyone knew the holy texts. This religions oppression cause a lot of resentment towards the church and over time, as society liberalized and the interrogations ended, people in general just simply stopped believing in the fairy tales. This also contributed a huge degree to the massive emigration to America from Sweden. The last remnant of this remained up until the year 2000. Before 2000 everyone born in Sweden was automatically made a member of the state church.

@@IlyssaAlvarez Well, we don't exactly stray from it, you can't stray from something you have never known. :) I think most of us original swedes have only known a few religious people. One of my grandmothers were christian, that's the only one in my family that were religious. And I know of a couple that were friends with my parents that were some kind of christians. Those were the only ones I knew of for most of my life.

Well I thought the service was really bad in U.S (NY). So rude all the time and still think that they deserve tip. It’s more genuine in Sweden and even tho we are more quiet, we are almost never rude. But 75% of U.S service jobs are rude lol 😂😅 or just hated me

A country where one, after over a century since the SI-system was implemented worldwide, still not has adopted it, is, in my eyes a bit suspect. Feet, inch, pounds and ounce is distinctly stone age.
