In my opinion, "Lion" and "Oh My God" are the pinnacle of (G)I-dle's artistry. I LOVE all of their music, but these two have a depth and emotion that set them above the rest for me.

Id add the hann/hwaa trilogy to that peak of their artistry. I burn and I trust are just absolutely unmatched. And even when asked recently/these days, soyeon said herself that those r the lyrics shes most proud of writing throughout their whole career (source: I.M. on the beat interview)

Soyeon said she wrote it about love in many forms and the gender is up to the audience to decide. To quote her directly: "I didn't want to limit that 'she' to a certain being or a certain definition, so it's open to anything. I believe that all kinds of love are valuable and must be respected. That's why I don't want to limit 'she' to something specific." This song blew me away the first time I heard it. Thanks for your reaction.

Oh cool! I try to interpret all love songs as being about whoever the artist/listener is thinking about, so that quote makes perfect sense! I like that they do say 'she' though even if just to make that open interpretation official (if that makes sense). Thank you for sharing this context!

I rarely see people go so deep into a song but this one has so much to it. Like you said, the sound, the visual, the lyrics, it all plays into the experience. They have so many great songs but this ranks high for me. And yes, Studio Choom versions are usually great, it's like a performance video worth seeing even if it's not easy to share with us.

I theorise that Oh My God was Soyeons answer to the hate they got after an 'Uh oh' encore stage. They were kissing each other on the cheek as a joke to celebrate their music show win and some korean internet trolls spewed hate. So Soyeon made a song about forbidden love to shut them up.

Oh My God uses light and dark, purity and sin elements- to communicate the idea that true divinity comes from knowing and trusting yourself hence the album title “I-Trust”. The “Oh my God she took me to the sky , she showed me all the stars” Minnie says is to leave the viewers wondering to whom are they referring- to themselves, or to love itself, which is a common motif across (G)I-dle’s discography. Soyeon also said “ I didn’t want to limit the ‘she’ to a certain being it a certain definition.” She says “it’s open to anything I believe that all kinds of love are valuable and must be respected. That’s why I don’t want to limit ‘she’ to something specific

I love all the visual storytelling around Minnie in this MV. The mirrored shots of her at the start and end, the dancers with black hands slowly darkening her white dress with hand prints. the gun shot sound/imagery combined with the spilled wine and the blood drip. It's all really simple metaphor, but it's really effectively done. Actually there is a lot of really great visual cues throughout that make it one of their most interesting MVs for sure not to mention the song.

The English version is more explicit and direct regarding the subject. In an interview, Soyeon only limited herself to saying that the music is made for personal interpretation but that music should not be limited by gender or preferences. that all types of love should be valued equally, The first time I heard it it blew my mind, the sound, the nuances of it, I love it

This was the song that made me fall in love with Idle! I think it was the first Kpop Mv that made me think "Wow, THIS is art!" and the song is just, ugh, I dont even have the words to describe it. It was actually one of the songs I was hearing the most when I realized I was bi myself, so it really ended up speaking to me in a level I wasnt expecting but will forever gratefull for. And even if the song itself isnt only about queer love, the fact that they went through a path that could be read as such and that the members are actually allies to the community (kudos for Shuhua validating her queer fans on lives) will always make my heart a warm in a way, because we know Korea is still a pretty restrict country in many ways.

Oh I love this!!! That's why I think it's so cool that they did this and that they specifically say "she!" As I've said before, I read love songs as genderless because I know many LGBT artists have had to lie and say "he/she" when they meant something else. The thing about GIDLE, is you gain an even deeper respect and appreciation for them once you get through their entire discography. It’s so fucking varied and diverse. It’s almost hard to believe that all these sounds and concepts come from the same group. Truly amazing. Like what do you mean the group that did Oh My God also did Dumdi Dumdi??? There was also an English version of this song on the album. The lyrics read very differently from the MV translation. It was explained that the MV was Soojin's devil character seducing all the angels of the group, and all of them falling for her.

The imagery in this one is so amazing and the the song it self is amazing, but I fell like you could write a 20 page essay on the imagery alone for this one. I especially enjoy Minnie starting out pure white/innocent and then getting more and more covered in black/sin as the video progresses and as she gives in to her desirer, but that's just my interpretation. No matter what I really love this one, it really is pure art.

I was a newbie KPop fan the day I saw them perform Tomboy and on a music show where they had a skit with martial arts stunts before they started the song. I thought “oh cool a rock gg.” but when I traced backwards through their discography it was so great and intense, I kept appreciating them more with every listen. I am there for (G)I-dle today, but still prefer the smoother production of their old-school albums. Minnie definitely had a signature sound they used. Even as a middle aged non-religious straight man, I felt this song loud and clear and never doubted what I believe they were talking about. Many people have debated who She is. It’s none of my business unless Soyeon wants to tell me.

This song is sort of the final version of Lion (wich had to be made quickly for the Queendom show). You can hear Lion melody in it, but with more advanced production, and the M/V is of course a piece of art. And beside that, as always, it include Soyeon', poetry...

To my understanding Soyeon is somewhat religious, but she's not Christian, she's Buddhist. She likes to meditate a lot and go to the temple. And for a while she was obsessed with horoscope type predictions and stuff

@@ChainReactionsChannel I mean, she is a storyteller. She can perfectly well use christian imaginery or believes to tell a story, even if they are not their own. Some of the teasers to this mv are very interesting. I reccomend them. We are so used to pop music being presented as some kind of diary that it is easy to forget that most of it is fiction in the end. I get increasingly bored day by day by those profesional critics that write reviews that consist of 5 paragraphs of an artist personal life (a personal life they actually really know very little about) and the one single paragraph of avoiding talking about music. I swear, sometimes I get the impression some critics get their material rather from interviews than the songs themselves. There is a programm called I LIve Alone which presents celebrities in a day of their lives and you can see her going to a Buddhist temple. There was also a fan who told her that she was an angel that had come down from heaven to which she laughingly replied... "But I am a Buddhist..."

I can’t say it’s my favourite, but I’ll definitely back you up on liking Senorita. The Latin influence feels on-point and the visual humour never wears out for me. As a bonus it’s fun to watch @reacttothek (Classical Musicians React) and see some of the members faces when brass instruments appear in a K-pop mv. You’ll get only ❤ from me for that choice.

Its a brilliant song. It does benefit tough of understanding the lyrics more than others. People who say "i dont care about the lyrics" (I am sorry, but the lyrics to a song are 50% of it, and that is a hill I am willing to kill on) do potentially have a harder time with that one. That rap telling you not to get distracted and focus on her while the beat is trying so hard to distract you is pure genius. But it is a very cheeky song, sensual and playful, and the mv is hilarious and fitting. It takes the alluring sductiveness of Latatat to anotherr level. If you look beyond thye surface, it s almost perfect in its simplicity. Are there too many fu fus? Maybe... I think they fit the tongue in cheek nature of the whole thing, but I wont be mad if somebody thinks that two or three less would have been better. Other than that tough, it is the perfect companion to Latata and it sets the tone of the ep very nicely.
