I've been running a '05 STS with 4.6L North Star and MRC since Aug. '07. I have done all of the work except a major head gasket repair.... meaning I know the car extremely well over these 14 years. It is now at 172K miles. 1) I have never had an oil leak and my car has been on the road for 16.5 years now. 2) I have never lost my clock on my radio. You can buy a Nav update disc pretty cheap to update your maps if that is the issue. I had my NAV replaced under GMPP at year 5 due to losing screen calibration. The replacement NAV system has the same problem the past 3 years. Calibration comes back on a restart usually. Things that I would mention to potential buyers.... A) the 4.6L NS with MRC is an absolute blast to drive. Sorry that you got bypassed on MRC. Note, under that electrical tape on the connector you will likely find a $5 resistor to fool the BCM (otherwise you would have suspension errors). If you plan to keep your STS remove the resistor and go back to MRC struts. There is a reason that this technology was ported to the Corvette and even Ferrari. B) matched front and rear staggered tires are getting hard to find C) I run on 87 octane 98% of the time D) MRC struts and springs cost me $2,200 just for Delco parts E) the transmission is sealed and very, very difficult to access the fill port F) if you have fun with the 4.6L you WILL wear out your differential carrier bushing and need to replace it to get rid of the torque thump. It is a $23 part but 4 hours of labor.

How are you able to put 87 . Anything besides premium and I have a check engine light on until I fill up premium
@edmamon4655
@edmamon4655 Жыл бұрын
@@jrdewees Something is wrong with your car. The manual clearly requires 87 octane, but recommends 91 octane for best performance. I have since gifted the car to my son and it now has almost 189K miles. It has been run on 87 octane 99.8% of the time. I don't recall the check engine light ever illuminating on this car.

@@flyprince4401 I bought a new XT5 two years ago and gave the '05 STS to my son and DIL. She prefers it as her daily driver. It is at 193K now. Still having the head gasket repair as the only major engine work. Plugs and knick knacks were done at that time but thing like timing chain are still OE. It has produced 2 cam position sensor errors but those are easy and cheap fixes.

Got an 07 v6 STS, had timely oil changes and routine maintenance. She still runs beautifully and is quiet as a hybrid. Timing chain problems were/are caused by poor oil quality and long time between oil changes. And all aluminum blocks burn oil. This ties into the poor oil change routine.

I used to own a 2005( bought in 2009) V8 AWD with the 18" staggered wheel set up, HUD and adaptive cruise. The issues I had were with the transaxle( replaced with a rebuilt unit under warranty). I also a issue where the display on the Nav was very dim on cold days for about the first 20 minutes of driving. There was also a cover for the power driver seat controls that came off and the lamination peeled off the front door handles I sold that car in 2015. I think it had about 80K miles at the time

@@Dan300 Yep, they lowered the compression a bit in '08 and made it optional. It's why the '08+ models are more desirable frankly. For my 2008 I typically use 87 octane but every 3 or 4 tanks I'll buy/add Lucas Oil fuel additive - it's really just an octane boost. In fact, if you still have yours, buy Lucas Oil additive (Autozone or wherever) and add it to every fill up with 87 octane. It's literally going to save like $10 per tank. One tank additive is like $1.99, so versus $.60 per gallon more @ 10 or 15 gallons... I'm sure you get the math here. Take care bro, and stay safe my friend.

@@Dan300 I actually had an STS V up until May 2019, but my nephew totalled her. It wasn't his fault mind you lol. Someone smashed into him from behind. He wasn't hurt, but the car was done. She was an amazing car, but was SUPER expensive to use every day. She got about 11 MPG around town, and that's if I kept my foot out of it. Insurance paid off and I went back to a standard STS (but with a v8 of course lol). Her name is Rachel, LOL. Dark grey with black interior. She's pretty. She's reasonable to operate expense wise, and crazy comfortable to drive not only every day, but even on road trips. And yeah, like you, I had the mufflers & resonator cut off. She sounds AMAZING.

I’ve had an 05 for 3 years. Bought it with 30k miles now has 70k. Ive taken it to the dealership for all the maintenance. It does burn quite a bit of oil, surprisingly so. I get the oil changed every 3 k and usually by then it’ll be half a court in oil gone. It’s been a decent car. Other than the new struts and a bushing I haven’t had anything mechanical break on the car. I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy them, but for me it’s been great.

My Repairs were 2 Ignition Coils, Motor Mount, Differential Mount Bushing, Rear Wheel Bearing, Gear Shift Control. Changing the Headlamp Bulbs is a real Bitch, I really would like to meet the Bastards that designed this Car Rode like it had no Springs, My Kidneys still hurt, and it had the Soft Suspension. Some Bitch went thru a Red Light, while I was turning Left. Car was drivable with a Bent Headlamp, and busted Bumper Cover. I waited 2 yrs before filing the Insurance Claim, and the Car was written off, about a Month ago. I kept it, sold it to a Friend and he is going to repair it and get inspected.

@@youngchevyboy605-5 I bought a 2006 STS with the 3.6 just six months ago, 72,000 miles. Recently, engine light came on, multiple codes and garage had a list of things that might be wrong. Yesterday the engine quit, timing chain went (the 3.6 has three timing chains) and no compression on three cylinders, 30 lbs on on two cylinders and 160 lbs on remaining cylinder. That concludes that valves were also bent and possibly piston and/or cylinder and maybe head damage. I paid 4 grand for the car, it drove and looked really good. I am stuck with a car that is now worth maybe a grand as is or replace parts or engine for somewhere around a couple grand or more with the real possibility it will happen again, the car will never be worth what I would have in it. Research this engine, it was used in many GM cars and the timing chain issue is VERY common and expensive and some people have replaced the chains multiple times. Run as fast as you can in the opposite direction of this car if you did not buy it yet. Do your research thoroughly on any car you are thinking about buying, they all have issues but some have very expensive issues.

@@damonbrace8252 I currently have a 08 sts with the northstar that has about 196k miles, runs good, before that I had an 05 sts northstar, had about 220k miles when I sold it, that one was running well too, I only sold it because the car was starting to rust on the body
