Lenhart charges $700. (With the $50 discount) for the Vortexx and $450 ( with the $100 discount ) for the Eaton Ultra. I agree the Vortexx has some interesting features but i wonder how much better it is since the specs are very similar given the difference in the price?

Yes the specs are really close but after some investigation I thought the GDT made sense. I'm not an electrical engineer but when I started to see that setup in commercial (sensitive electronics) type protection I figured there must be something to it. Plus the warranty made me give it a second look. Also, since I had to deal with them a little it was a good experience. I hope I never have to find out if the warranty works...LOL. Hey, Rusty yeah the panel surge protectors are cheap insurance the ones on the meter that power company put on and charges a monthy fee suck. Tried to tell my sister and her friend both got hit and she lost refrig, and few other things power co. Did nothing and won't honor insurance coverage. I installed a panel surge 3 years ago and she go hit again this time no damage except the device and I changed out two breakers I didn't like the way they looked but the company that I used reimburse her for the cost. Sisters can be a pain. Just to let you know $700 a little high in Tampa bay its about $350 to $425 Knowning that its the Villages increased the price. Inline cable surge protectors are good to Amazon. But the top rated surge protector is unplugging the device when storms are a round tv microwaves are usually the first things hit and remember it usually comes up the ground it goes out the AC or the hotline

The Villages has nothing to do with it. I could have gotten it cheaper but it would not have been the same unit. Not all are created equal.

Do I need a surge protector on my gas dryer (can't really figure that out reading online)? Current price on standard Ultra by Lenhart is $550 ($500 with your KZfaq discount).. Again, thanks..

We live in Palm Beach County. We spent a lot of money on the whole house surge protection. We had a huge storm and lost power . The surge took out the thermostat. The electrician said , he didn’t understand it bc the surge thing in the circuit box looked fine . I guess it’s helpful to have , but isn’t perfect

I wish I could really say something on that but without knowing all the facts its hard. I guess on one end you could say maybe it did its job and think what it might be like if you had nothing. I have no idea if it was a type 1 or 2. Also no idea how the thermostat was hooked in. If it was attached to the internet line or phone line that is a way you can have a problem as the hit can circumnavigate around the surge protector. But with that said I'm not an electrician. Is the Thermostat wired to anything else like home network/internet?

@@RustyNelson Rusty you are correct. Having some protection is better than none. In this case regardless of how the thermostat was connected to the internet, usually it's wireless, they are all powered by the 24 volt transformer in the air handler. The surge should have been shunted at the whole house surge protector but since it wasn't, the induced surge could have been picked up somewhere along the thermostat line or the surge was reduced by the surge protector but not enough for the thermostat to handle. There is no way to tell. This is why we always mention that anything man made is not 100%.

Thanks for the video Rusty. In the PSP video it mentioned that the Florida adopted the NEC guidelines in 2023 that all new builds would have whole-home surge protection. For homes built in 2024 and newer is their any benefit to having Vortex? Are there other PSP devices that do whole-home surge protection for other transients such as internet as I assume the Vortex you installed does not protect from those type surges. As I think of it, I've not seen any surge protectors for my internet cabling only the power to the electronic devices.

This is a great question. I have no idea what they are installing on the newly required homes (2023). I know that you need items like you said (internet, phone lines) Might be a great group of questions to ask PSP as I know they have (and other companies) separate things for those lines. They are installing an EATON surge protector circuit breaker in the circuit breaker panel. I believe it’s Eaton BRNSURGE Type BR whole panel surge protector or its equivalent. It’s not as robust as the Eaton Ultra or the PSP Vortexx or the Siemens external protectors but it will give you pretty good protection.

Thanks a bunch for the info, John. I had a feeling that is what it might be as it is an easy install and very cost-friendly. And yes some protection is better than none and it complies with the new NEC code for new builds I believe. I thought about doing that when I started this investigation but I figured with all the electronics I have in my place I would gravitate to one of the more robust units. Again...thanks for the note. @@RustyNelson Interestingly, these protectors were added to the electrical code to protect hard wired Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors and any other safety equipment. Apparently there were enough of these detectors failing from power surgesand and homeowners not knowing it for them to add this requirement, which should have been done a long time ago.

You will need to call them for the cost. The unit is constantly "triggered" with spikes. The unit has a lifetime warranty. If it goes bad you will hear it with the alarm and the light will turn red. Subscribe Button for new videos: bit.ly/3aToJ3H

That is a Clamp-On Ground Resistance Tester. These are specially testers use primarily for testing the effectiveness of grounding systems.
