In the first version of this "Impossible stool" I used chains
However, this had several disadvantages.
1. the chains made a noise.
2. the chair was too high and the supports broke because the lever was too big.
The new version is lower, instead of chains ropes were used and the middle part was reinforced, also supports were attached to prevent buckling.
Tensegrity, tensional integrity or floating compression is a structural principle based on the use of isolated components in compression inside a net of continuous tension, in such a way that the compressed members (usually bars or struts) do not touch each other and the prestressed tensioned members (usually cables or tendons) delineate the system spatially.[Wikipedia]

I can see that this one is an improvement but I thought the first one looked a bit more elegant. Good vid and it's always a treat to see you making anything. Cheers Stephan!

If I understand this correctly, the center chain or rope is the only weight bearing element while the outer ones simply stabilize the entire structure.
@michaegi4717
@michaegi4717 4 жыл бұрын
The stabilization of down forces are managable. If you sit exactly in the middle just the chenter rope will be forced with your weight. If you sit on a corner the force in the middle will be twice and the oposit corner will be loaded with the weight of your body (upwards). The whole thing gets tricky if you have any twisting forces. As far as I learned from my mechanics classes the forces on the ropes can be very high in twisting cases. If I'm right you shouldn't try to keep the outer ropes too "stiff". The stool is too impressive to get destroyed but I really wonder how much twisting force this can handle.

@@michaegi4717, while I know this isn't really the same concept, the chair can only rotate a little less than 90° from resting rotation (or is it torque? Idk what the word is) due to the beams of the bottom piece and top piece obstructing each other, thus the ropes might bot ever be able to reach their maximum twisting force to begin with, but I didn't even know twisting force was a thing until now so idk. (I am however aware this depends on how tight the stabilization cords are though, as well as sturdiness and elasticity of the cords.)

@@MrBonners I just gave an answer to the question above. But in general such videos should also mention the weekness. Because some people will spend time and money building this, and will be disappointed if it doesn't hold. In this case the question is if the side ropes just stabilize, which would suggest that you can use thin ropes. This is not a good idea. That's all I want to mention. It's not my job but build a bullet proof version to help others.

@@MrBonners , but that would be completely unnecessary and pointless is the ~90° maximum twist the hard parts allow isn't enough twisting force to cause concern, thus the stool could be fine just as it is- if not, then sure, criss cross ropes.

Leave it to a German crafter to elevate this phenomenon to its pinnacle. i was curious about varying the shape, size, of orientation of the hemi-sections, especially as a hexagon, and you have provided me with a real-world example. Thank you! Subbed!

I could, and might, build something like this for myself, but I don't think I'd ever make a chair or stool out of it. It would make a great side table, but I can see the failure point, and it wouldn't be pleasant for whomever is sitting on it when it goes. I'm almost certain if you had a fidgeter, like my kid, sitting on it that center support would be toast.

You have used 2 two dimensional v shapes to form the frame hence you have created loads along two perpendicular axes hence you needed to restrain the frame against the weaker axis have you tried tetrahedron frames?

He basically explained that he added a structure to support side forces. And repaces the chains with ropes because is is simpler to control the tension of the ropes and ropes don't make noises.

I'm wondering if there is a strong fishing line (clear) that could be used instead of the ropes. This does look like a fun project! I would use 1x1 that would give a little bit more side to side stability than the added supports. I think it kinda detracts from the initial design. I wonder if thick dowels would also work well.... 😇😎 Love your willingness to share these ideas/skills! 😇😎

A thin string sure looks good. But it should not be too thin. I also had thinner lines in the beginning, but they broke. 😊

@ now I'm thinking of just clear tubing. So instead of trying to hide...it will accentuate the rigidity. Maybe even through some LED lights on the inside of the tubes for under seat lighting. Might be an interesting bar stool for those that tend to have holes in their pockets at the bar. Can easily find what they potentially dropped on the floor. 😎😇 Thanks for the dialogue!
