Good to see someone talking about a game that is a couple years old. So many games slip through the cracks with the cult of the new.

Gold West is like the board game equivalent of grilled cheese and tomato soup. It's not likely to impress anyone but whenever it comes out you're going to have a nice cozy time.

So pleased to hear you talking about and liking Vienna. I also bought it cheap last year on Amazon and have been singing it's praises ever since for all the same reasons as you. I too teach games and this was such a logical teach with a refreshing amount of juicy decision points.

I did the The Isle of Cats KS and I like the game. I enjoy the solo mode a lot. Have played it 10+ times. The solo play is more thinky than playing with other players. I too enjoying puzzling the pieces together, building cat families, completing the rooms, and lessons. I think it is a very good mid weight game, which looks great, and is easy to teach and play. I played it in family mode with my grandkids and they enjoyed it too.

Glad to see Gold West getting some attention. It's a great game. It would be doing better if it had some good cover art.

Thanks for your review of Mechanica. I really enjoyed Visitor in Blackwood Grove, and thought this would be an engrossing game about building a better factory than your opponents. I backed on KS and got the two mini expansions which add some variety, and the production values are really good. But... our games ended just when you feel you've got your factory up and running. My preference would have been several more rounds and more blue prints. I think there's some great thinky gameplay here regarding your factory build and money generation, but the game is over before you can gloat about your own design prowess.

In Vienna, whats the point of the free character space? The rules say it comes with a risk but it seems like the obvious spot to go first if you want a character card.

Gold West is one of those games that one could call "elegant". Sometimes more rules doesn't necessarily mean more fun.
