Dennis was serving life alongside Nelson Mandela, but the black prisoners were in a separate prison, he was charged with them and even offered to take the death penalty, by taking all the blame , the others refused, they tried to escape before sentencing but couldn't, 6 of them including Dennis were given 4 life sentences each... They chose not to appeal thier sentences as political statement, they were willing to accept the death penalty, and the only reason they weren't handed the death penalty, was cos the government was afraid it would make them martyrs ...but while in prison they were integral to the struggle, hence why he didn't want to escape...he did over 16 years tho, till the power dynamics was shifted n he was one of the first to be kinda pardoned

i have not seen this movie, but in this video he says "meneer" as if it were the guards name, but "meneer" is just the Dutch word for "Sir"... (i assume it is "meneer" because in the video it sounds like it, but since i havent seen the movie i am not sure) (and in South Afrika they speak a different kind of Dutch "Afrikaans" as well as english, so thats why i think it is not the guards name, ofcourse could be wrong)

You're right that it does just translate as "Sir" (when used to address someone) or just "Mister" (when used as a title). But Afrikaans nicknames are also a bit weird like that - they'll often use something like that as a pseudonym, even a persistent nickname.

The living standers after apertheid have improven imensly number 1 there is freedom that alone has brought about a lot which improved the standard of living ten-fold From freedom movement (not walking or driving around your own country in fear and under constant scrutiny; going to any point of interest, filling up the beach on Christmas and NYE) to speech (talking back to a white person could have gotten one imprisoned... that bad!), to association (being friends with whomever from whatever race without being harassed or labelled a k-lover or something along those lines, interracial marriage etc), participation in social, economic and most importantly, political activities (having a say in who runs things and how (what policies they intend on rolling out that will inadvertently impact our standard of living) in as much as it's hard to come to terms with why the ANC keeps getting a majority of the vote, the people have spoken.).The only way out and temporarily so, thanks to curfews, was by having a job cleaning up after the madam's diabolical dinner party mess. In terms of education... need we say more? Yeah south africa is at the bottom of the list in terms of global education standards but it's better than sitting through class in preparation of the abovementioned job, being groomed for menial, monotonous and degrading work (labour legislation was practically non-existent, whatever the madam or baas demanded went without protest). Bantu education was no system of education; no intellectual development whatsoever. Natives now have a wide array of disciplines formerly restricted to Europeans... Science, technology, economics, math, arts etc etc not a training course on how to be a stellar super submissive garden boy with a perfect command of Afrikaans. The people in the rural areas that were also mentioned no longer live incredibly far from basic services. Post-1994... a lot of clinics, hospitals and schools were built in those areas, instead of one clinic for 50 villages its probably one for 10 now. They probably would have had to pack an overnight bag for 3 days just to collect pills. Social services have improved so many rural natives' living standards it's ridiculous... from social grants to feeding schemes, without which the rural areas would have resembled Ethiopia circa 1980-1990s. It all boils down to choice... there is an abundance of choice over the course one wants their life to take, natives can be anything now and as a result of the availability of choices, the black middle class has grown, is flourishing and if that isn't one of the signs of an improved standard of living then IDK. The whole class is composed of a variety of professions that would never have been seen daylight under Verwoerd's watch. Yeah... there are socio-economic inhibitors and growing inequality gap but that's because exploitation by Europeans is still rampant ---side eyeing the conglomerates--- plus we tend to discount the fact that yes! The gap is wide but the Europeans on the greener end of this gap didn't have to start from ground zero, for long, natives have been subdued into toiling towards the augmentation of the europeans' wealth for peanuts and porous living conditions. You can't strip away the subjugation now and expect both parties to instantaneously be on the same footing in terms of standard of living, nor expect expeditious catching up.
