John, That larger round hole at the point of the large v-notch is actually to keep the board from splitting along the grain. It spreads and dissipates any undue force placed on the 'legs" of the notch. Very good video with useful ideas!

I've been metalsmithing/silversmithing for about two years now, so it was about time! Never even considered using a hole for filing wire. Great tips! Hey John, You'll love the way your bench pin will perform after a tune-up. There are a couple of other things you could do to the bench pin that I didn't mention in the video. First, you can file a small, medium, and large sized groove perpendicular to the sides, just past the top of the large "V". The grooves will hold wire and tubing that will not fit through the hole you drilled for your common size of wire. Next, you can carve out a small area at the end of the bench pin that is closest to your bench. This little carved out area makes a handy place to put small parts and stones while you're working at your bench. Thanks for your support! : )

Thank you for your videos. I always enjoy them. I am a carpenter trying to become a silversmith. I am currently enrolled in an Art School In my general area. I am in the process of building a jeweler’s bench. I am only 5 foot tall and want to make sure that I put the bench pin at best height. I’ve used a standard bench at the art school and it works OK but it seems that the pin is a little bit high for me. I have to sit while I use the bench pin, or do anything for a long time, because I have a serious back problem. Is there some standard for height for bench pins?

Yes. The best height for you can be easily determined. Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the ground and position your upper arm parallel to the floor. Your bench pin should be the same distance from the floor as your elbow in this position. Thanks for your support! : )

Hi John! What size saw blade would you recommend for sawing the wood if using a jewelers saw? Great video, by the way; as are all your videos.

You should use a bigger saw blade. When I use my jewelers saw frame to cut wood, I often use a coping saw blade in the frame instead of a tiny jewelry blade. Just use the biggest one your have. Enjoy your tuned up bench pin. Thanks for your support! : )

What species of wood is used for the bench pin? I am guessing that a hard wood with fine grain and of course no knots. Hard Maple? If a jeweler had access to a good woodworker, these precious little blocks of wood would not be difficult to make and any modifications to length, width, angle, etc. to suit one’s personal needs could be done. Depending on the cost, it may be prudent to have 3 or 4 made so that you have a stash for the future.

They can be made out of plywood. I’ve even seen plastic ones for sale. But they don’t tend to wear out very quickly. 😀

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy I can’t see plywood as being a desirable material. Plastic would depend on the type of plastic. Plastics are a science unto themselves. While some cut and break easily, others are very tough. HDLP might work. That is the stuff cutting boards are made of. PVC is another that might work but I think HDLP would still be better. Another plastic that might work is Acetal. The higher quality quick release buckles are made of acetal. I think I would still prefer tight grained hardwood. Hard maple, hickory, persimmon, or Texas ironwood.
